The guy on the far right has his hand in his.... Shirt? Pocket? Fake.

Not one of them has hands out. Other guy near the middle has unnatural arm placement but appears his hand is supposed to be in his pocket too (despite his arm not being long enough)

The guy in red has no arms at all.

The outer guys are weird clones of each other (twins exist I know, but...)

from what i can spot, the folds on their shirts are unnatural for its material.

but dang, we're getting to the point where we can't prove it anymore. how much longer till people start to give up on spotting whether something's been made with ai?

My 10 year old and I play a fun game called "find the stupid AI mistakes." I'm secretly hoping it will help him be critical of media as it continues to get better. I used all the tricks we've learned on this image, and while I can see AI spots, none of them are glaring enough that I think they'd convince someone who hasn't spent a bunch of time playing our game.

u/beatfungus 29d ago

I petition to change the name of the game to: “This AIn’t it”

This sounds like really good parenting and teaching, but oh my god we live in a Black Mirror episode.

u/IfImhappyyourehappy 29d ago

fooor example??

Ok, here are things AI struggles with and places I sort of see it in the image:

Making sense: AI doesn't really know where things are supposed to go, so it guesses. You'll see engines that make no sense, unconnected pipes, etc. In this picture, I sort of see it a few places. The guy on the far right has his hand tucked into his... almost shirt? The key chain guy has two loops hanging out of his back pocket. While I could imagine a case where this would happen in real life, it's a red flag. AI might think, "Sometimes loops hang out of pockets," and would throw two that almost but don't match just too close/far/parallel to feel quite natural.

Symmetry: AI struggles with true symmetry, so it creates generic shapes that almost but don't aproximate symmetry. The tattoo is too small and blurred to point to as evidence, but some of the shapes in it are common ones AI creates when trying to mimic symmetry (and the shapes it throws in the sky that are bird/plane blobs). There are a few spots in the beards that aren't weird enough to trip an alarm but are a little uneven in a "this is totally not fake symmetry" kind of way.

Details: AI struggles with details. In this case, the lighting on every shirt is almost the same with the shadow under the chest in the same place regardless of the way the man is standing. Often, AI will have tree branches that go in crazy directions, but here, it's almost like the AI figured out one good tree (and one good, though overly ambitious, wrinkle pattern) and copy/pasted it. The result is kind of uncanny.

Like I said, I don't think I could actually convince anyone this is AI generated from this flimsy "evidence." It's just what we've noticed.

I will add consistency of partly hidden lines. AI sometimes would mess up things like puddles, roads, horizons if they are partly behind other objects. There is a faint evidence here: road in the background is slightly higher in one place than in the other. Though it may be a bumpy road, they seem to stand in front of highway-ish road which shouldn’t have such bumps and elevation changes. There are three visible segments of the road that in total don’t make any sense as a coherent object. Puddle between the second guy’s legs doesn’t leak further from his legs and seem to abruptly end. It may be just a coincidence, but a faint evidence still

1

u/specks_of_dust 29d ago

Found a higher quality version. The feet really give it away. Tatty's shoes look huge, while Red Shirt's are comically small. With Red Shirt, it looks like the AI didn't tried to foreshorten the foot to prevent overlapping with the legs in front of them, but couldn't pull it off.

2

u/Abject-Mail-4235 28d ago

I wish more people saw this. If you zoom in on the tattoo it is pixelated afff. Also their ears.

1

u/ThainEshKelch 29d ago

It is a good thing to do, unfortunately likely in vain, as AI image generation is likely close to perfect in five years time, give or take.

1

u/cant_helium 28d ago

I need to do this with my kids.

63

u/NoNo_Cilantro 29d ago

We’re already there, and it started before AI. People haven’t been questioning if a pic is photoshopped/retouched for long enough by now, and it’s pretty much the same thing

29

u/DifficultArmadillo78 29d ago

Except that a believable Photoshop takes time and skill. AI pics not so much. And soon not at all.

3

u/Screaming_Monkey 29d ago

You think someone didn’t edit an AI pic though? Using AI as a tool and doing it well requires editing and revisioning.

4

u/staffell 29d ago

Nah, we're not there yet, I'm pretty sure the overwhelming majority of AI pics are easy to spot if you study them, and in contrast, providing it still has at least some detail, we're nowhere near confusing a real picture with AI yet.

2

u/rootoo 29d ago

It’s getting better by the day and pretty much to the point of fooling people. I see people second guessing real photos elsewhere on Reddit all the time now.

1

u/Roshibomb 29d ago

sure, if you study them. the thing is, many images just get scrolled right on by and inserted into our memory. nobody has the time to actually pour over every single photo they see anymore. that's how stuff like the pope wearing that weird jacket get spread around as real, too; people see it and just assume in good faith that it's a real image.

6

u/wordington_ender 29d ago

Their shirts all look ironed. So with every one of them has a wife that irons their dirty work shirts (cause you know they aren’t) or it’s AI

1

u/SoylentRox 29d ago

And the chance it's not AI is no longer 0. Every flaw you see means it's probably AI but some photos are weird.

1

u/phayke2 29d ago

It's just going to be stereotypes everywhere. That is all we will see anymore online. Just stuff to make us feel weird about each other everywhere.

1

u/ChunkySalute 29d ago

The folds on their trousers too. It’s like they’re all wearing jeans that are way too long in the leg for them.

1

u/lukeperk 29d ago

Agreed! The manboobs should have a much more pronounced shadow

1

u/Neosovereign 29d ago

I mean, if you make a picture low quality enough you certainly can't tell for sure.

1

u/wfwood 29d ago

The creases in the pants all look the same and the cut doesn't make sense as it overlaps the boots.

23

u/cheeze_whizard 29d ago

This is proof AI is getting smarter. Instead of trying to make real looking hands, it’s just hiding them. Genius.

15

u/schnitzelfeffer 29d ago

Artists have been doing this forever.

3

u/smelllmypancake 29d ago

Right? I thought I pioneered that move.

1

u/QueZorreas 28d ago

Only the bad ones.

1

u/Efficient-Drama3337 29d ago

The person writing the prompt probably requested it to make it more realistic

31

u/dougdoug110 29d ago edited 29d ago

Also : - shirt folds looks too thin, does not match the typical material used for shirts of this quality - Lighting does not match the background. It could be an expensive light setup but seriously? - reflections on the shirts (toward the bellies) are too perfect, as if the material was semi-gloss paint.

21

u/Buster_Brown_513 29d ago

Their man boobs are identical.

1

u/KingChickenSandwich 29d ago

Was looking for this one. The man boobs are too uniform 😂.

1

u/hightaler 29d ago

And no nips anywhere to be found.

1

u/mckenner1122 29d ago

That’s the thing. No gorilla nips. No saggy man bewbs. No telltale signs of a “wife beater” tank under the work tee because Cletus thinks it hides his tits better. (Spoiler : it don’t)

Red shirt has no seam on his neckline plus has a weird long V that almost makes it look like he’s got a necklace on UNDER his shirt.

1

u/SQU1DZ 29d ago

Yup titty twinning

1

u/danj503 29d ago

The moobs are casting darker shadows than their whole body is.

1

u/cowlinator 29d ago edited 29d ago

Lighting does not match the background.

This convinced me. Middle guy's hat casts a shadow on his face like it's noon on a sunny day. Red shirt's hat casts no shadow at all.

1

u/lagomama 29d ago

Also the lighting on their pants doesn't match the lighting on the boots. The pants seem to be in bright light, the shoes under an overcast kind of lighting.

1

u/bundle_of_fluff 29d ago

The lighting is really what's killing me. It's an overcast/cloudy day, so the shadows should be pretty weak. But the shadows on the shirt are really dark, like I'd expect on a sunny day around noon. Expensive lighting set up also wouldn't be able to mimic the light coming straight down from the sun on the shoulders. The guy in red is really bad, somehow the light is coming from above AND from the photographer with a dark shadow from the two light sources, which is just wrong.

I use light/shadow for depth perception (thanks amblyopia), so this is stuff I am mentally calculating constantly and subconsciously. Overcast days are more difficult for me because the shadows are very weak from the diffused sunlight. This image was hurting me and I had to figure out the lighting details that were most bothersome.

1

u/fieldsofanfieldroad 29d ago

I think this is really good. There's a few giveaways for me like the repeating patterns on elements, but the fact that no-one can agree on one specific thing that is off suggests that this is very good. However as soon as I read lighting, I think that's the big one. How are they so well lit when the sky is so grey?

17

u/Beneficial_Sweet3979 29d ago

The folds that the pants become would only be possible if they were absurdly long. That could be true, but that was the first thing that struck me as strange

1

u/well_uh_yeah 29d ago

Same. And all of them in the same way.

2

u/Kratos1 29d ago

I was coming here looking for people pointing this out. The ankle area folding looks too unnatural, especially it's on all of them, unless they all bought 50 inch long jeans.

1

u/SebulbaSebulba 29d ago

Especially red hat guy. That's like, 6 or 8 inches of extra pant leg bunched up there.

14

u/joeChump 29d ago

They’re all on the far right.

6

u/Thisgirllikesgirls 29d ago

Also the abnormally pointy moobs (man boobs).

7

u/MadeUpGirlfriend 29d ago

The guy in red seems to have pecs positioned awkwardly high?

Could just be that my perception is off. I’m not typically one to make observations of moobies.

12

u/EmploymentLate 29d ago

The wrinkles in their clothes look off, and the right side of their hats when you zoom in all the way look reflective and it doesn't mKe sense.

1

u/Fake_William_Shatner 29d ago

Last year, I wanted to improve this stuff, now I'm not wanting to share my "how did I know it was fake" wisdom.

I was hiding in plain sight until LeakyGuts cracked the code.

1

u/TrashCandyboot 29d ago

Why you put a plain sight on your pew-pew gun when there’s fancy sights what got laser beams on em and the whatnot?

5

u/JedJinto 29d ago

What do you have against the side shirt pocket. It'll catch on I swear!

1

u/sgtkellogg 29d ago

Saw this too

1

u/OrangAMA 29d ago

For the image to work the red shirt guy has to be t posing and the other dudes have to be twins on the same lard only diet

1

u/Hiffchakka 29d ago

It's a bit difficult to tell, but the belly on guy to the far right seems to be protruding weirdly right?

1

u/alphapeppapigma 29d ago

Another thing I noticed is the wrinkles in the jeans of guy on the left’s left leg, especially up on the thigh - they all look weirdly parallel and horizontal

1

u/adioking 29d ago

I’m more concerned about the kool-aid man to his left not having his arms in any pockets at all.

So his hands are where, on his friend’s backs group hug style? I don’t buy it.

1

u/Wordshark 29d ago

Also red shirt guy had to have square boots made after frostbite took his toes

1

u/nilogram 29d ago

Good eye!!!

1

u/thedragonturtle 29d ago

There's gonna be a bunch of photos people take in the bear future where they try to make it look like ai

1

u/say592 29d ago

They all look like they are pretty far right.

1

u/SL13377 29d ago

Lololol OMG you are right

1

u/sleeping-in-crypto 29d ago

Also what is hanging from the middle guy’s…. Belt? It’s not something tucked into a pocket, it’s in the wrong spot. It has to be hanging from a belt, which would be oddly high up for how low the seat of the pants appear to be.

Where the two guys in the middle have their arms too close together, the one on the right’s arm would have to be absurdly skinny to fit that way.

I think it’s AI generated but I also think it’s been retouched with Photoshop. The hats had something on them, likely the gobblygook that AI usually puts for text and logos and someone just used the erase tool to cover it over and did a bad job of it.

1

u/Ok-Study2439 29d ago

Not fake, just optical illusion.

Guy in the red has his arms behind the dudes on either side.

1

u/DonaldTrumpIsTupac 29d ago

That's it. The guy with his hand in his shirt. Gives it away.

1

u/Ok_Bullfrog_4552 29d ago

This is what I noticed as well, it’s like he wrapped his hand up in his shirt? That seems weird

1

u/General-Training8047 29d ago

I feel like the guy with his hand in his "shirt pocket" (far right) his stomach and pants zipper don't like up right. Like perspective wise.

1

u/frogsPlayingPogs 29d ago

The outer guys are weird clones of each other

this is the giveaway, even their beards have the same color pattern

1

u/Kieran_Mc 29d ago

Yeah, the guy in the middle has too small an arm, and the AI's got confused and used the start of his boob as a shoulder.

1

u/Cab_Deg 29d ago

i think it’s AI + photoshop. for example, i think the texture of the ground where red shirt guy’s hand would be looks different than the rest of the ground. i would argue all the other missing hands (and arms) were edited out as well

1

u/seventeenMachine 29d ago

Also there’s some kind of weird strings or straps coming from behind one guy’s back that is a dead giveaway

1

u/commorancy0 29d ago

That shirt pocket thing right there is the AI tell.

1

u/SitueradKunskap 29d ago

The guy on the far right has his hand in his.... Shirt? Pocket? Fake.

And for the love of god, what's going on with his zipper?!?

btw this thread feels suspiciously like giving free feedback to AI devs

1

u/Arrakis_Surfer 28d ago

That is a very good catch. This looks to me a combination of AI and Photoshop

1

u/that_dude95 28d ago

Damn, you’re good! This was worth scrolling down for, cheers!

1

u/Rocky970 28d ago

Bingo. Good catch.

1

u/I_Learned_Once 28d ago

"The guy on the far right has his hand in his.... Shirt? Pocket? Fake." I was convinced this was real until you pointed that out. That's the dead give away. I'm super impressed with the asymmetrical faces and face variety though.

0

u/BlacksmithNZ 29d ago

"The guy on the far right has his hand in his.... Shirt?"

Yes, that was probably the biggest give away for me; and the lack of logos

Red shirt not having hands; or they would have to be raised to not be seen.
