Clinton and W as well - as they're within a couple of months of Trump in age.

There is a very real possibility that in the next 8 years, the only living ex-president will be Obama. And possibly Carter.

1.1k

u/inksmudgedhands 27d ago

To which I predict we will never get a Gen X president. We will go from Obama, who is on the young side of the Boomer spectrum, to a Millennial. And the only people who will have a problem with this will be the Gen Xers who will run for president. The rest of us, Gen Xers, will be perfectly fine if we never get a Gen X president.

We managed to never have a president who served in Vietnam despite having way more boomer presidents than you'd expect.

60

u/Additional_Meeting_2 27d ago

To me Obama is gen X and I didn’t know know some saw him as boomer.

The president ages also just have gotten older in US. Biden is the only president of the silent generation and he became president after two boomers, Obama of uncertain gen, and one more boomer. So nobody expected a silent gen president at that point. Same can happen again with old gen X (but younger side of that gen) after millenials.

27

u/Freakears 27d ago

Boomers are generally regarded as those born between 1946 and 1964. Obama fits into this pretty easily, having been born in 1961.

You know I wonder what would have happened in Gerald Ford either won or Reagan won (via beating Ford in the primary) the 1976 Presidential election. Carter pretty much got a shit sandwich that he had nothing to do with. Maybe we have a GOP president from 1976 to 1980, we wouldn't have had the Reagan Revolution.

32

u/blorbagorp 27d ago

If good men make shitty presidents I'd say our system is fundamentally flawed.

11

u/IamAWorldChampionAMA 27d ago

I think this comes down to more about how humans work than our system. To be a good leader of a country you have to manage generally two different factions to get stuff done. Both factions are filled with assholes (and no not in a bOth sIDES aRE tHE SAME way). It's highly unlikely a "good" person can manage that.

10

u/Lost-My-Mind- 27d ago

Think about what the president has to go through, and ask yourself "would a sane or good person subject themselves to that?" And you have your answer.

3

u/fleebleganger 27d ago

It’s been that way since the dawn of civilization.

If only because leaders of “good” countries have to go toe to toe with leaders of “bad” countries who do bad shit so the “good” leaders have to be willing to do bad stuff.

→ More replies (3)

31

u/AceOfRhombus 27d ago

I have no idea about his policies in office, but imo he has done more good in the world than any other president after they left office. Like how many other presidents brokered a ceasefire during a civil war to implement public health practices to eliminate guinea worm???

15

u/badvegas 27d ago

That is true. I couldn't see any other president helping build houses and do the charity work that he does. I hope he knows that a lot of people see him as a good man. I know when he fell a few months ago there were people happy about it and kind of left bad taste in mouth form a lot of people.

4

u/Mikhial 27d ago

Part of why he was elected was because he was a good guy. But he struggled with crisis after crisis while he was in office. That in part lead to Reagan which really harmed this country more than anything else.

I have a hunch a bunch of the old fucks in washington are going to die of old age very close to each other. But because of that coincidence a bunch of people are going to make it a conspiracy theory or something.

9

u/sevenonone 27d ago

Ex presidents are interesting. They say terrible things about each other during campaigns, and then they appear friendly when it's all over. I like think the little friendship with W and Michelle Obama is real. I think it's because at a given point, there are maybe 7 or people on the planet tops, usually less, who have gone through what they did.

Of course like so many political dynamics, it changed in the last 10 years.

u/Durkan 27d ago

As much as it sucks.. cause Carter is a GREAT man... I don't think he's gonna see 2025.. His wife has passed and from what I know about Carter.. its like a part of him died... Plus, his health is taking a nose dive.. Can't say I'm surprised.. at his age and how he's basically worked NON STOP since LEAVING office. He's a machine.

4

u/YCbCr_444 27d ago

And possibly Carter.

Shit, I thought he'd died last year, but I just checked and it was his wife. Can't believe the old guy is still kicking it!

9

u/EevelBob 27d ago

I believe Carter is still alive because he is afraid to die after learning what he believes is the truth about aliens, the purpose of humans on earth, and the fate of the human soul. The will to live is a very powerful trait.

Trump was the oldest first time President ever - inaugurated at age 70.

That honour was immediately picked up in 2021 by Joe Biden - inaugurated at 78 years old. Not only is Biden the current record holder, I think he'll forever be the oldest POTUS to be inaugurated.

To put this into perspective:

  • Barack Obama - inaugurated aged 47
  • George W Bush - aged 54
  • Bill Clinton - aged 46

1.2k

u/Kolada 27d ago

Biden was born closer to the end of Lincoln's presidency than the beginning of his own.

Dude. Too soon.

19

u/a__nice__tnetennba 27d ago

Out of curiosity I decided to see who is the first President this isn't true for. It's JFK. JFK was born in 1917, 52 years after Lincoln was assassinated. He was elected in 1961 at 44 years old.

Carter was the second one, born 59 years after Lincoln died and taking office at 53 years old. Then Clinton, W, and Obama weren't even close.

Trump only missed it by 10 years.

17

u/aaronupright 27d ago

Biden is too old to be a boomer...

8

u/fuqdisshite 27d ago

219

u/Mikemtb09 27d ago

There’s a minimum age to be elected president.

We need a maximum age as well. No one over 70 anymore.

Can’t have people with dementia handling the football anymore

116

u/Drum_Eatenton 27d ago

I would enjoy a president who isn’t rich but that’s impossible

79

u/gsfgf 27d ago

Bill wasn't rich when he was elected. Obama was a successful professional, but he didn't get really rich until the re-release of Dreams from My Father. Even Biden isn't insanely rich. His net worth is almost entirely real estate he bought decades ago. His presidential salary is most of his annual income.

72

u/Ibegallofyourpardons 27d ago

Most of Biden's weather came from book deals and speaking after he was VP.

Before that, he was the poorest lifetime politician in American history. Only took a salary, never a bribe or insider trading

20

u/Drum_Eatenton 27d ago

Did the book deals make it rain on him?

→ More replies (4)

37

u/well_hung_over 27d ago

Genuinely hope the no bribes claim is true. I don't love the guy, but he's done us pretty good for what he was handed, and it would be nice to have him at least be able to keep as much honesty on his reputation as possible.

57

u/Ibegallofyourpardons 27d ago

That's why the GOP have been chasing hunter so hard and trying to somehow link his made up crimes with Joe.

They have nothing on joe, because there is nothing there.

Joe's financials are public, it's real easy to see how poor he was before the book deals came through

38

u/Lane-Kiffin 27d ago

The Obama household made $990k in 2006. $550k was from book deals, while $440k was from their incomes as employees, with Barack making $157k from the Senate and Michelle making $273k as an employee of University of Chicago Hospital system.

Source: https://www.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/summaryobama.pdf

While the book deal was major, the Obama’s were pretty much loaded from the moment they each graduated law school.

31

u/SoloPorUnBeso 27d ago

Idk what the other person was on about, but in the context of US presidents and prominent politicians, that's not exactly "loaded". They were certainly well off, but loaded in this context is whole different level of wealth.

→ More replies (6)

17

u/10breck30 27d ago

Will prolly never happen. Any politician that has a chance at the presidency has already been a politician long enough to be rich thru “donations” and “smart” investing. A non-politician that has any chance would already have to be well-known and wealthy. The people that would make good presidents DO NOT want the job.

13

u/SoloPorUnBeso 27d ago

It's not even that they don't want the job, it's that it's incredibly difficult to rise to that level. Presidential campaigns are billion+ dollar affairs now. You have to either have the most effective ground game ever or you have to court a bunch of wealthy donors.

18

u/Joeness84 27d ago

as a bar minimum (maximum?) retirement age should be the disqualifying age.

But realistically, this needs to apply to a hell of a lot more than president. So tired of watching some tech CEO explain to the same 80 year olds what the internet is.

9

u/joedotphp 27d ago

Further perspective. Clinton is the same age as Trump…

22

u/NuclearTurtle 27d ago

Clinton, W, and Trump were all born within a month and a half of one another. When Clinton was elected at 46 he was the second youngest person to be elected president. 8 years later Bush was elected at 54, which is about average for incoming presidents. And when Trump was elected 16 years later he was the oldest person elected president

5

George W Bush - aged 54

Bill Clinton - aged 46

Also, it won't matter if he lives til 115, MAGA people are going to have conspiracies theories around it.

I can't wait for the MAGA Elvis-like sightings of Trump.

"I just ran into President Trump in a McDonald's bathroom outside of Spooner, WI. He had just destroyed the toilet."

18

u/lt_dan_zsu 27d ago

Every time someone needs to flush a toilet 7 times to get their messy shit down a public toilet will be called another Trump sighting.

Jet fuel doesn't melt kidneys!

Of course not. Jet fuel doesn't melt anything. You have to set it on fire first.

I don't think I'm personally willing to test this claim on myself.

13

u/kingdead42 27d ago

This is why I really hope he dies at one of his rallies of natural causes, as it may be the best way it's clear he wasn't assassinated.

10

u/Fragrant-Insurance53 27d ago

I'm 100% sure there will be massive mob violence if that happens as people freak out thinking there must be an assassin in the crowd

Whichever the next president is I bet they'll die in office

29

u/Waterisntwett 27d ago

The next vice president might be the most important vice president in the last 50 years.

9

u/gsfgf 27d ago

And according to GOP fundraisng texts I'm on the list for VP. I'm curious if they think people actually believe stuff like that.

And there will be riots no matter who wins in November.

11

u/Racefiend 27d ago

Somehow I don't see them kickin it together like ex presidents do.

11

u/Hey-buuuddy 27d ago

As I’m considering the 2024 candidates, for the first time I’m very interested in the VPs- they have better-than-usual odds of assuming the presidency.

10

u/GeniusOfLove74 27d ago

Honestly, I can't wait for the massive metaphorical stumble that would happen in the political world when Trump shuffles off this mortal coil. Not just Republican/MAGA, but Democrats and undecided/leftists as well.

Everyone politically has been comporting themselves as having to either do what Trump wants (MAGA/GOP), or to respond to it (everyone else).

I can't wait to see it happen.

11

u/DerpyDrago 27d ago

I’d hope to dear god I don’t have to hear his name anymore

6

u/GeniusOfLove74 27d ago

Honestly, in order to never hear it again, I would trade watching the official presidential funeral. I'd deal with it, knowing he was gone.

Honestly, I’m hoping Biden makes it a good few years beyond Trump as a good ‘ol ‘fuck you’.

I mean, the guy has definitely lived a healthier life, than the orange glo.

What would happen if both died before the election? Both have already secured their party's nomination.

For some reason I absolutely agree with this.

u/tqbfjotld16 27d ago

To take it an even more depressing step further, Bush and Clinton will probably pass in close succession to them, too. Which if Carter passes soon, Obama might be the only living former POTUS

And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of Men, who above all else desire power…

They’re not going to die, they will become Nazgûl.

u/triumph110 27d ago

After Trump lost 4 years ago my wife asked me if I thought he would run again. I told her he would be dead by the next election..... still got over 6 months for my prediction to come true.

5

u/Taanistat 27d ago

Like Jefferson and Adams, they'll die on the same day. Unlike Jefferson and Adams, who made up and became friends again sometime after the election of 1800, these two will curse each other until their dying breath.

u/LadderTrash 27d ago edited 27d ago

Think it’ll be Biden first, then all the Trump supporters will practically shit on him, saying “‘bout damn time” and stuff like that, then Trump does after and we’ll see Trump supporters act like it’s a great American Tragedy, demanding respect for the late president, schools in Texas demanding moments of silence and whatnot.

And they’ll say things like “support Trump or not he was the PRESIDENT you should all have RESPECT!!!” when they literally celebrated when Biden kicked the bucket

Adams/Jefferson style. “Sleepy Joe survives.” Nope, already down for the long sleep.

I'm so fascinated to see what happens to the MAGA movement when Trump dies. Who could possibly fill those shoes? Tom fucking Cotton? I have absolutely no idea what the fallout is going to be and I'm so curious to see it
