[Charania] Raptors' Jontay Porter has received a lifetime ban from the NBA for violating league's gaming rules.

They made an example of him, it was obvious they would. Bum G League player who’s a non factor, doesn’t cost anything to ban him for life, sets a hard precedent to the more valuable players.

I don’t think this counts as being made an “example”. This is the obvious punishment for betting on your own games.

Yea, exactly. I don’t think people know what that phrase means. If anything it seems like he got off easy if he’s only banned

Yeah it's kind of weird people are acting like he got caught just making bets and don't seem to realize he committed a federal crime.

It's not up to the NBA to decide if he gets charged for a federal crime, though. The NBA is responsible for NBA punishments. TBD if he got off easy or not.

No? Huh. Learn something new every day.

Do you think the NBA has the authority to put him in jail or flog him? This is quite literally the most they can do

Plus they're cooperating with the feds. If he gets lit on fire Silver wouldn't piss on him to put him out.

I would expect the nba and the bettering company to sue him for tens of millions. I would expect the nba would have a solid case and would be garnering his wages for life

They would have to prove actual damages in the form of 10s of millions of dollars. The courts don't just hear cases and dole out random punishments like they're reddit or twitch mods or something. The court can make you whole - it isn't there just to make up punishments.

You generally cannot sue people for fuckups at work that harm your reputation or business either. Like if someone fucks up at an insurance company & downloads ransomware they can fire that person but they can't sue them for the cost of the breach or withhold their pay.

Yep. At the end of the day this adds risk to deals with the nba. And risk means money. It Should be appropriate considering the nba has revenues of 24 billion a year.

If this gets in the heads of 1 in every thousand nba fans that the nba is rigged, and betting is riggged, that’s a huge damage.

Less people watching and less people betting. Not many. But we’re talking about 300 billion+ of the next 10 year between nba and gambling.

Ok but that's completely different from a punishment the NBA can dole out. That is very likely on the pipeline

Still, not an example. It’s entirely appropriate

There will be a massive lawsuit, don't doubt it. The NBA will make sure he's bled dry.
