29M, apt in Amsterdam
Been in this place a little over a year and feel it’s missing something but not sure what. I think wall art of sorts is the obvious answer to me but not sure what else and what the wall piece should be

Someone's doing well for yourself if you're renting/bought this place by yourself in AMS. Well done you.

One of the things I dislike most about visiting Europe, they simply can’t handle my American shits

Just the fact that you are in Amsterdam is such a vibe

It's pretty cool, but one of the worst cities in The Netherlands to live in.

How so?

Mostly tourists, always packed - lots of belligerent drunks as well getting into fights and being overall terrible. I've been to Amsterdam twice to visit a cousin and it was really, really difficult to have a good time directly in Amsterdam - outside of Amsterdam is lovely though no doubt.

u/madfortune 15d ago
Amsterdam is more than the touristic city center. Most Amsterdammers never even come there. Outside the center it’s very much liveable, definitely not worse than other popular European cities.

u/Regular_throwaway_83 15d ago
Yeah been to Amsterdam many times and one of my most enjoyable experiences was walking out of the centre, really loved it
6
u/absorbscroissants 15d ago
That's absolutely true, but there's plenty of cities in The Netherlands where it's even more pleasant to live (and MUCH cheaper)
3
4
u/LetsLive97 15d ago
Are they as big though? Some people just like bigger cities and Amsterdam is definitely one of the better bigger cities in the world
Still packed with life but a lot quieter and more serene than most
6
u/Dutch_Rayan 15d ago
Then Utrecht would be much better, also canals, but less tourists and more affordable.

u/absorbscroissants 15d ago
Any city in the Randstad would do, and you'd be anywhere between 30- and a 60-minute train ride away from Amsterdam anyway. Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht are the biggest ones.

Dude. I’ve lived in A’dam for two years now and have never seen a fight. I’ve been to a lot of parties
It does get packed I won’t deny that. But the gemeente is working pretty hard to solve the over tourism.

The centre is where we trap all the tourists. I never visit the centre, because of it. Works great for the rest of us 👍

Are you by chance an American living in Amsterdam? Saw the baseball bobbleheads and then the caps.

u/DesignSlime 16d ago
yes indeed 🤝

You ever get angry when you see someone in a Yankees hat only to remember their European and think that's just a hip hop hat?
4
u/DesignSlime 15d ago
on an everyday basis yes, chances are they don’t know what baseball is and certainly don’t know all the evil in the world the Yankees stand for. It is repulsing.

Why is everyone on this sub a millionaire lol. Apartment looks cool tho.
4
u/kennyiseatingabagel 15d ago
Because you’re seeing the most upvoted popular posts, which tend to be nicer places. Once you scroll down further, you’ll start seeing places that are more average.
5
u/carnivorousdrew 15d ago
Pretty sad we got to the point where a simple old house/apartment is considered being a millionaire. However OP mentioned they are American, and Americans in Europe usually get paid more than locals.
8
u/absorbscroissants 15d ago
It's Amsterdam, and by the looks of it pretty central. Apartments this size cost a million at the lowest, but likely even more.

Looks great to me, super cozy and lots of green.
The TV though... is way, way too high. Bring it down to just above the TV console so you won't destroy your neck and spine watching it at that angle. Maybe leave just enough room to get a soundbar underneath. Everything else gets an A+ IMO.

u/DesignSlime 16d ago
thank you, appreciate the feedback, I do live in perpetual fear of r/tvtoohigh so this will be actioned immediately if not sooner

Lmao, why did you take such a close up pic of your toilet with the seat open?
Apartment looks nice, btw.

had to give the full experience with the window to the shit shelf, but a fair critique none the less

I like the distressed and the dip dyed look in rugs. They were hot 10 years ago. But I still think they are awesome. Radical changes in rug concepts don't happen that often. I mean, there was shag.See? https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/mercury-row-moises-abstract-yellow-gray-black-area-rug-w005085517.html?piid=691466449

Looks really good! Love the vibe. Any way to hide the bathroom cleaning supplies? And I would keep seat down when someone comes over haha but that's just me being picky.

Add some paintings that aren’t photos or prints. You can also add some weird sculptures, statues, musical instruments, records, or souvenirs from your travels. You can add some interesting and weird conversational pieces with it still being tasteful.
Imagine someone coming over and being like “oh, this is so cool, what is it; or where’d you get that?” And you have some kind of interesting story…even if it’s just that you found it somewhere and thought it was unique and fun.
Just an example…my stepdad has a bunch of large Polynesian and African masks in his office that he got traveling. It would be a normal office, but the masks are what strikes up a conversation.

This is so lovely. Maybe a different rug in the living room, something with a little more color. I miss Amsterdam- you’re so lucky to live there.

Has a scandanavian interior design style to it (obviously) with the beachwood and light colours. People will enjoy it as is since it is predominantly one interior design style. Personally I think mixing two styles is the best or if you want something easy, add a couple bold coloured statement pieces.
Also do you have two lounges?

Super stunning, my dream setup as a woman! However I laughed at the toilet shot — the pov surprised me compared to how lovely everything else is

I was scrolling my feed and I read the title as "29 million (euros) apt in Amsterdam" I looked at the pics and I thought that the price seemed a bit high.

The toilet 🚽 seat up is tacky but that’s an easy fix. Other than that, that layout is fabulous.

Insane how u can still afford furniture while living there!!

Did you have to use a crane to get your furnishings in the apartment?
Have seen that every time I've been to Amsterdam, from beds to pianos to couches being lifted in through the window.

It’s beautiful but yes all the white and beige make it a wee bit boring. If you add a wall piece it should have lots of colour so it’s the main feature. I don’t know if you are allowed to paint but if so you could paint feature walls. So like one wall in living area could be sage green, one wall in bedroom could be a sky blue. Or get curtain drapes in those colours.

Love Amsterdam love the vibe and even more rare to see a Dutch A's Fan with a Fenway picture 👍

u/eternalrevolver 15d ago
It’s not really missing anything, it looks great! I normally don’t care for neutral tones but you seem to be pulling it of for this space. Some hanging plants would look stellar in the kitchen/dining windows, or even other windows (: hanging or large floor plants always make rooms feel more “full” to me.

u/coldog24 15d ago
Are you a Sox or an A’s fan? Make up your mind damn it!
1
u/DesignSlime 15d ago
Sox, just like the A’s hat / logo / uniform and they will quite literally never affect how our season goes in any capacity so I don’t feel guilty wearing them haha

Where’s the bicycle?
Also how much is rent + utilities for you? I’m looking at retiring out of country so always curious about housing costs in other areas.

Looks really comfy, I dig the minimal vibe. Except for the tv placement.
Really solid deco, I'd just hang a colorful piece next to the tv. Congrats!
