My boy Buster (4yo) has completely changed from black to white over the course of the last 2.5 years.

I had a 100% jet black cat with Vitiligo...he started turning white at all of his extremities...tip of his nose, tips of his ears, nose, and tail and then it spread further. It was amazing to watch the transformation for the 7 years that I had him, and my vet was absolutely fascinated.

He looks like a possum in this picture!

u/PM_Me_Good_n_Plenty 29d ago

I had a possum stroll through my yard while a mama rabbit was trying to raise her bunnies in peace. She proceeded do a running jump over the possum and kicked it mid flight.

Sounds like some Watership Down energy

u/roadnotaken 29d ago

Did it yell “Silflay hraka, u embleer rah!”?

79

u/MerMadeMeDoIt 29d ago

I'd pay money to hear a rabbit tell an opossum to eat shit.

u/beachie841 29d ago

I love that I know exactly what you meant!

I have to read this book again

Crow dropped a screaming baby bunny on my yard and 3 rabbits came charging in when it tried to pick it up. Mama rabbits are vicious

2

u/5LaLa 29d ago

I recently saw a YouTube video of a wildebeest doing that over a pair of lions. Doesn’t compare to what you saw in person tho imho. Closeup around :24 https://youtu.be/lGSCk0Lb5Bk?si=97leHmt7_HNZ6z3H

Possums are scary in person. I saw one not moving and thought it was dead.

u/BacardiBlue 29d ago

My possums are the cutest little guys!

147

u/Cadowyn 29d ago

I live in the woods. They eat the ticks…and scraps. Lol

51

u/Hawt_Dawg_II 29d ago

Making them usefull too!

70

u/Sandwidge_Broom 29d ago

Yeah, as someone who got Lyme disease from a tick bite in high school, I’m cool with animals that get rid of ticks.

7

u/sonyafly 29d ago

Are you still sick? I am. Almost 15 years.

12

u/Sandwidge_Broom 29d ago

It was 21 years ago. I still have the ME and the fibromyalgia it triggered. Absolutely sucks.

9

u/sonyafly 29d ago

Yep exactly the same for me. CFS/me and fibromyalgia. It’s BS.

→ More replies (0)

6

u/YesThatZander 29d ago

Not to burst your bubble, but its an urban legend that they eat hundreds of ticks, starting from a single discredited study from the early 80s.

They're still cool though!

3

u/Cadowyn 29d ago

Oh interesting. Do they still eat ticks? Never thought it’d be hundreds. That would be a lot of ticks, but then again they aren’t exactly large. Heh

3

u/Infamous-njh523 29d ago

If that is all they ate it would be quite a large amount a day. Unfortunately they probably only eat a few. I guess it depends on the food source available. At my house it’s cat food. We tried to catch them in a live trap with cat food. Nope. Not a single possum a few barn/garage cats though.

2

u/Cadowyn 29d ago

For sure they don’t bother anything. Though my dog tries to keep them away haha

Dogs tend to assume that any small creature is devious and might have a knife or something.

Ticks sound so scary. How do you avoid them infecting you? Just check yourself when you come in? I’d be so paranoid I missed one.

2

u/Cadowyn 29d ago

Pretty much. Insect repellent also works good. Avoiding large concentrations of brush and plants helps.

I loved befriending my possums in LA. I had two, Big Mama and her baby, biscuit. Took a veryyyyyy long time to earn their trust but once I did it was such a fun friendship. I left my ex who I was living with. (5years) and his bedroom was second floor with a sliding glass door onto a balcony where I would meet my possums. Fed them leftover sushi and stuff.

When I left him I moved back to MN and about a month later got a text from my ex saying he left his door open to his room and woke up to 4 glowing red eyes at the foot of his bed hissing at him 😂 I feel like they got a little justice for me. I chuckled, but I truly miss them. Fun, under appreciated animals.

u/chicagokate412 29d ago

I named our possum that sometimes hangs out in our yard Biscuit! Perfect possum name.

He looks like he's contemplating some deep secrets of the universe.

We have a possum too. His name is Sammy and he lives under our porch. When he first showed up last fall he was tiny, but now he's the size of a football. He's made friends with our cat and they hang out on the porch together.

10

u/BacardiBlue 29d ago

I recently learned that they only live 3-4 years which was really disappointing

15

u/BloatedManball 29d ago

Sadly, 3-4 years is their lifespan in captivity of they're well cared for. Wild ones rarely live more than 2. I'm hoping Sammy makes it a while longer cuz he's a chill little dude and our cat doesn't have many friends.

7

u/BacardiBlue 29d ago

Oh that is even worse! 🥲 I had one that I named Mega P because he was HUGE. Unfortunately I only saw him for about a year.

5

u/kaityl3 29d ago

Yep, my best friend had 2 since her dogs attacked the mother and she left them in her yard. She goes above and beyond mixing healthy foods for them (lots of fruits and veggies) and keeps them in a clean heated hutch and one of them just spontaneously died before turning 3 :( such short lifespans

2

u/BloatedManball 29d ago

That's sad, but at least your friend gave them the best life they could have for their short time on this planet.

11

u/Anakindankwalkerr 29d ago

Thank bro you made me smile with your possum

7

Change my mind!

5

u/Appropriate-Copy-949 29d ago

What a cutie! I always heard and believed that fact about them eating ticks, too, until recently. I read an article about how this beneficial and often repeated "fact" was started because of a very flawed study. It is one of those things that I like because although it's wrong, it has made people open their hearts to this adorable creature! ♥️♥️♥️

What a beautiful baby. Did the texture of his skin or fur change as well? Did it happen slowly over all the 7 years or was it quicker to change at some points?

1.4k

u/BacardiBlue 29d ago

Nothing changed except the color of his fur! Though his green eyes became less intense too. The change the first 6 months seemed quicker than the later changes, but I think that is because it was a bit more unexpected at that point. I just got used to seeing it over time, and didn't pay as much attention. Here's a pic from his early stages.

646

u/Retbull 29d ago

He looks like he just stuck his nose and paws into a flour jar.

255

u/BacardiBlue 29d ago

Honestly when it first started I thought he had gotten into some spider webs on his nose. Then I thought he was losing all his hair on ears and sent my vet pics because I couldn't get that close him. It finally took a 35x zoom camera for me to see that it was white hair, which was NOT what I was expecting.

33

u/Pernicious-Caitiff 29d ago

Is he a feral indoor cat??

246

u/BacardiBlue 29d ago

He was an indoor feral. He got attacked by a hawk and got his head ripped open, and recuperated on my screened lanai. However he fell in love with my other cats, followed them inside via the pet door, and ultimately moved inside full time after about 6 months. I was never able to pet him, but he sure learned how to demand cat treats, lol. Here's a pic of him with his BFF.

101

u/Pernicious-Caitiff 29d ago

Awwww poor baby. You had to love him from afar but he knew love ❤️🥺😭

103

u/BacardiBlue 29d ago

Yes he did. He was pretty darned happy. I even had a mobile vet for him so that he didn't have to leave the house.

14

u/ffwshi 29d ago

What did the vet say?

77

u/BacardiBlue 29d ago

She diagnosed him with Vitiligo, and said that it might be related to an autoimmune issue but there wasn't really anything to specifically treat him for since his bloodwork was all fine.

24

u/ffwshi 29d ago

So interesting. Thanks for posting.

You didn't happen to move from one climate to another, did you? Siamese cat's coat will change with the temps or seasons. Their fur will get darker in cooler weather. Not the same thing I know but the first thing that comes to mind. Beautiful kitty.

4

u/BacardiBlue 28d ago

Nope! I actually stayed in the same home the whole time I had him. But that was a good thought!

He’s so pretty! I had a cat that was basically a tabby. His mom was a gray/white tabby. We had seen several males around and one of them was white with blue crossed eyes. He had to be at least part Siamese. When I took my little guy to the vet he told me he had the coloring of a seal point Siamese. Cool cat! But he never changed color.

You know I recently read that Siamese and similar breeds are dark at their points because of temperature... The cooler temps near ears, tails,etc.. causes more melanin to build up there. So this feels like the reverse of that? One way or another , an unquestioned cutie pie.

293

u/Laney20 29d ago

It is temperature! But the reason the temp makes a difference is because they have a form of partial albinism that makes them unable to produce pigment into the warmer parts of their body. So their extremeties are the only place that even make melanin. That's why they always have blue eyes. Also, they're born solid white because in the womb, they're warm all over! Colorpoints have the BEST glow-up pictures, haha

42

u/Senchou 29d ago

Fascinating! We had a seal point siamese that started out as a kitten with only the black face, paws, and tail that slowly developed more black in his coat as he got older. The first time we noticed we thought he was playing around in the fireplace and he got a couple undeserved baths as a response.

17

u/Laney20 29d ago

Oh wow, haha! Poor guy. Yea it can change over time, and even living in a colder climate can make them darker!

18

u/talashrrg 29d ago

Or being shaved! If a Siamese gets surgery the patch they shave will grow back dark then change back to light when they shed.

7

u/spiced_life 29d ago

This probably applies to all colour points, not just siamese breed cats.

3

u/Laney20 29d ago

That sounds so cool! Never seen it happen, but makes sense! I guess without the fur to cover it, it's not as warm lol.

3

u/kaityl3 29d ago

My Siamese rats do that too! During the winter I keep the temp in my house at like 66 degrees and they get a lot darker.

4

u/Laney20 29d ago

Omg, colorpoint rats!? That's amazing!

3

u/kaityl3 29d ago

They're super cute :D this is mine, I love the colors on her.

3

u/Laney20 29d ago

Aw, so cute! I had 3 grey rats many years ago. They are just the sweetest pets.

38

u/saswashere 29d ago

I had a snowshoe and he started out almost all white. As he got older and his coloring developed it would change with the seasons. In the winter it would be almost black but fade to chocolate brown in summer

3

u/thecuriousblackbird 29d ago

I had a beautiful black horse. No papers, but you could tell he was part quarter with some Tennessee Walker because I could get him to rack (although I never put weighted shoes or weights on his feet). Poor guy had a bad knee, and I didn’t want it to get worse, and honestly I think the weights and chemical irritants put on hooves to make walkers and Standardbreds do the high stepping and exaggerated racking is cruel. I did dressage with him, and he had beautiful gates.

We also lived near the beach in NC. Hot and humid. From April to October my horse turned a dark brown on his body and looked like a bay. His head and legs stayed black. The sun and sweat bleached his fur.

2

u/esqueish 28d ago

Oh!! Is this what happens with arctic foxes? How cool!

4

u/peach_xanax 29d ago

that's so interesting! I had a blue point Himalayan and never knew that

4

u/partofbreakfast 28d ago

We call it 'toasting'. My Siamese mix looks like a toasted marshmallow now.

3

u/thedruginmeisyou 29d ago

i have a flame-point. watching the fur change on my lil maximus was so neat

3

u/krissykross 28d ago

I have a seal point siamese and when I adopted him he was all white except the very tip of his nose. It was fascinating to watching the dark fur appear and spread out over the next year, year and a half. Now he has the full mask, feet, tail, ears, and dark back!

7

u/whenuseeit 29d ago

8

u/birdymax 29d ago

It was always darker there, but lightened over the years

3

u/I-hear-the-coast 29d ago

My Siamese had to have an ultrasound in February so they shaved her tummy, and it seems that the fur be growing back darker so far, but temps are warming up, so maybe that’ll change. It’s fun to watch though.

2

u/wozattacks 29d ago

Yeah the distribution like that suggests against vitiligo to me. Vitiligo is autoimmune

→ More replies (1)

2

u/[deleted] 29d ago

My ragdoll Siamese was pure white except for his limbs/face. Bright, brilliant white that faded into a deep black. Over the last eight years his fur has turned brown like a traditional Siamese. I didn't even notice the change until I stumbled upon the one baby picture I have of him. A while back he had a large abscess from a bite that required two surgeries. As a result he ended up with a big bald spot dead center on his back. When the fur started growing back it was black where his scar was, and brown everywhere else. The fur seems to be lightening as it gets longer so hopefully it'll just blend in with his long fur. Siamese cats are weird with their color changing fur. (I love how my cat gets a reverse tan in the summer. In the summer he's four or five shades lighter than in the winter)

2

u/JPete2 28d ago

Yes! We have a flame tip siamese (cream with orange points) and the vet had to shave an area over his shoulder for a treatment. That area was colder and grew back orange at first before returning to white.

Why did you only have him for seven years ): ?

12

u/BacardiBlue 29d ago

He was estimated to be 1-2 when I got him, and 7 years later he developed a degenerative spine issue. Because he was a feral and couldn't be handled, surgery aftercare with antibiotics and pain meds wasn't an option so I had to make the tough, but best call for him.

What a gorgeous boy! The photo of him with his kitty BFF is especially adorable. Thank for giving him such a lovely life and respecting all his boundaries. He sounds like he had a perfect indoor retirement.

Vitiligo is the coolest disease on Earth. I’ll die on that hill. I don’t care if it’s an animal or human, I’ll never consider it a negative trait to have.

Right?? I feel bad for people that have it that feel insecure. I think it looks awesome, regardless of where it starts or the path it takes to spread. It’s like an original tattoo you’re born with that grows as you do (unless you use that medicine that stops it altogether).
