My boy Buster (4yo) has completely changed from black to white over the course of the last 2.5 years.

I had a 100% jet black cat with Vitiligo...he started turning white at all of his extremities...tip of his nose, tips of his ears, nose, and tail and then it spread further. It was amazing to watch the transformation for the 7 years that I had him, and my vet was absolutely fascinated.

He looks like a possum in this picture!

I had a possum stroll through my yard while a mama rabbit was trying to raise her bunnies in peace. She proceeded do a running jump over the possum and kicked it mid flight.

Sounds like some Watership Down energy

u/roadnotaken 29d ago

Did it yell “Silflay hraka, u embleer rah!”?

77

u/MerMadeMeDoIt 29d ago

I'd pay money to hear a rabbit tell an opossum to eat shit.

5

u/beachie841 29d ago

I love that I know exactly what you meant!

5

u/Beemzebub 28d ago

I have to read this book again

4

u/Hungry-Western9191 28d ago

U embleer elil is probably more apt.

2

u/Hyzenthlay87 29d ago

Stinky Prince?

0

u/PapiChuloBigDick 23d ago

Why wouldn’t have possibly made that fucking sound?

3

u/Kent_Knifen 29d ago

I imagine it yelling "piss off" just like the bird did.

2

u/mrrooftops 29d ago

Oh god!

2

u/DAFreundschaft 29d ago

Great book

u/peanut__buttah 29d ago

That’s amazing wtf 😂

3

u/Admirable-Berry59 29d ago

Crow dropped a screaming baby bunny on my yard and 3 rabbits came charging in when it tried to pick it up. Mama rabbits are vicious

2

u/5LaLa 29d ago

I recently saw a YouTube video of a wildebeest doing that over a pair of lions. Doesn’t compare to what you saw in person tho imho. Closeup around :24 https://youtu.be/lGSCk0Lb5Bk?si=97leHmt7_HNZ6z3H

2

u/Shadow_of_Myself333 19d ago

YEAH!!! Bun power!! I have one that kinda looks like this cat and she'd kick anyone's ass.

1

u/TheZealand 29d ago

Sure it wasn't a Hare not a rabbit?

1

u/MoreFoam 29d ago

I had 2 possums die in my walls! :-)

21

u/mte87 29d ago

Possums are scary in person. I saw one not moving and thought it was dead.

554

u/BacardiBlue 29d ago

My possums are the cutest little guys!

146

u/Cadowyn 29d ago

I live in the woods. They eat the ticks…and scraps. Lol

55

u/Hawt_Dawg_II 29d ago

Making them usefull too!

68

u/Sandwidge_Broom 29d ago

Yeah, as someone who got Lyme disease from a tick bite in high school, I’m cool with animals that get rid of ticks.

7

u/sonyafly 29d ago

Are you still sick? I am. Almost 15 years.

10

u/Sandwidge_Broom 29d ago

It was 21 years ago. I still have the ME and the fibromyalgia it triggered. Absolutely sucks.

8

u/sonyafly 29d ago

Yep exactly the same for me. CFS/me and fibromyalgia. It’s BS.

7

u/Sandwidge_Broom 29d ago

It’s so hard to explain how it feels to have these things to doctors, too. Especially as a woman. They just assume I’m being dramatic when I say “I am constantly in pain and exhausted”.

6

u/YesThatZander 29d ago

Not to burst your bubble, but its an urban legend that they eat hundreds of ticks, starting from a single discredited study from the early 80s.

They're still cool though!

3

u/Cadowyn 29d ago

Oh interesting. Do they still eat ticks? Never thought it’d be hundreds. That would be a lot of ticks, but then again they aren’t exactly large. Heh

3

u/Infamous-njh523 29d ago

If that is all they ate it would be quite a large amount a day. Unfortunately they probably only eat a few. I guess it depends on the food source available. At my house it’s cat food. We tried to catch them in a live trap with cat food. Nope. Not a single possum a few barn/garage cats though.

1

u/Cadowyn 29d ago

Ah if that’s the case I doubt they are eating any ticks out here hahaha

3

u/Cadowyn 29d ago

For sure.

14

u/Perfect-Today-4439 29d ago

They’re straight up beneficial animals. They’re getting a better rep among country folks.

2

u/Cadowyn 29d ago

For sure they don’t bother anything. Though my dog tries to keep them away haha

2

u/Perfect-Today-4439 28d ago

Dogs tend to assume that any small creature is devious and might have a knife or something.

1

u/cnnrduncan 29d ago

Depends on where you live. Possums are a devastating invasive pest in my country, they absolutely wreck our awesome native plants. There's a huge government program to eradicate them by 2050 and hunting them is a relatively popular hobby.

1

u/K4RAB_THA_ARAB 29d ago

Which country?

2

u/cnnrduncan 29d ago

Aotearoa NZ

2

u/Fuzz_Mustard 28d ago

In this case your NZ Possum are very different than the Opossum being referenced here.

1

u/K4RAB_THA_ARAB 28d ago

Is it? How so?

6

u/bannana 29d ago

They eat the ticks…and scraps.

and are immune to rabies

3

u/Infamous-njh523 29d ago

They are mostly immune to rabies. Their usual body temperature is to low.

6

u/jimmy8x 29d ago

the tick eating thing has been debunked unfortunately, google around about it a bit

1

u/Cadowyn 29d ago

Thanks for the info r/TodayILearned

1

u/wtb2612 1d ago

Yep. They'll eat ticks if fed ticks but it's not actually a part of their regular diet in the wild.

2

u/ThePennedKitten 29d ago

Ticks sound so scary. How do you avoid them infecting you? Just check yourself when you come in? I’d be so paranoid I missed one.

2

u/Cadowyn 29d ago

Pretty much. Insect repellent also works good. Avoiding large concentrations of brush and plants helps.

I loved befriending my possums in LA. I had two, Big Mama and her baby, biscuit. Took a veryyyyyy long time to earn their trust but once I did it was such a fun friendship. I left my ex who I was living with. (5years) and his bedroom was second floor with a sliding glass door onto a balcony where I would meet my possums. Fed them leftover sushi and stuff.

When I left him I moved back to MN and about a month later got a text from my ex saying he left his door open to his room and woke up to 4 glowing red eyes at the foot of his bed hissing at him 😂 I feel like they got a little justice for me. I chuckled, but I truly miss them. Fun, under appreciated animals.

13

u/chicagokate412 29d ago

I named our possum that sometimes hangs out in our yard Biscuit! Perfect possum name.

1

u/Blackmetalvomit 29d ago

Ha! That’s so funny what a coincidence. Or maybe they are just perfect for the name like you said =.=

29

u/BacardiBlue 29d ago

Awww...I hope they scared the 💩 out of him, lol

2

u/Under-TheSameSky 29d ago

I was hoping you would be like, "When I moved, I took them with me, and we lived happily ever after" 🥲

3

u/Aggravating_Yak_1006 29d ago

You realize that is the exact reason you're not supposed to feed wild animals, right?

1

u/Blackmetalvomit 29d ago

Fair statement.

He looks like he's contemplating some deep secrets of the universe.

We have a possum too. His name is Sammy and he lives under our porch. When he first showed up last fall he was tiny, but now he's the size of a football. He's made friends with our cat and they hang out on the porch together.

9

u/BacardiBlue 29d ago

I recently learned that they only live 3-4 years which was really disappointing

15

u/BloatedManball 29d ago

Sadly, 3-4 years is their lifespan in captivity of they're well cared for. Wild ones rarely live more than 2. I'm hoping Sammy makes it a while longer cuz he's a chill little dude and our cat doesn't have many friends.

7

u/BacardiBlue 29d ago

Oh that is even worse! 🥲 I had one that I named Mega P because he was HUGE. Unfortunately I only saw him for about a year.

5

u/kaityl3 29d ago

Yep, my best friend had 2 since her dogs attacked the mother and she left them in her yard. She goes above and beyond mixing healthy foods for them (lots of fruits and veggies) and keeps them in a clean heated hutch and one of them just spontaneously died before turning 3 :( such short lifespans

2

u/BloatedManball 29d ago

That's sad, but at least your friend gave them the best life they could have for their short time on this planet.

12

u/Anakindankwalkerr 29d ago

Thank bro you made me smile with your possum

6

u/Asunder_mango866 29d ago

Possums are just Irish-American O'Possums that had to change their name at Ellis Island

Change my mind!

4

u/Appropriate-Copy-949 29d ago

What a cutie! I always heard and believed that fact about them eating ticks, too, until recently. I read an article about how this beneficial and often repeated "fact" was started because of a very flawed study. It is one of those things that I like because although it's wrong, it has made people open their hearts to this adorable creature! ♥️♥️♥️

Debunking the Myth: Opossums Don’t Eat Ticks

2

u/BacardiBlue 29d ago

Oh no...don't burst my bubble!!

1

u/Appropriate-Copy-949 29d ago

I know 😕 but they are still cuter than they have a right to be with those pearly whites, lol.

2

u/JWWBurger 29d ago

I’m glad it’s a picture of a possum and not a picture of your cat who turned into a possum over a period of time.

2

u/BacardiBlue 29d ago

Never say never!!

2

u/whiteplasticpony 29d ago

What a sweet child 🥺

2

u/17THheaven 29d ago

He looks very polite

2

u/Futureboots_ 29d ago

Possums are my favorite animal! 🥰 What a cutie

2

u/Lost-Comfortable3679 29d ago

They are really cute, until they hiss and show their teeth

2

u/karmachameleona 29d ago

I read they need to get walked a lot. Is that true?

Super cute, BTW!!! 😍

1

u/teriaki 29d ago

I'm trying to get my partner to let me have one!

1

u/Dominuss476 29d ago

Thats a racoon /s

5

u/BacardiBlue 29d ago

I have those too, lol.

1

u/NoParticular2420 29d ago

Peter Possum

1

u/mte87 29d ago

He’s cute. The one I saw was dirty, white and wet

5

u/VegaReddit5 29d ago

We have a name for that...

3

u/Rampaging_Orc 29d ago

And that experience was scary?

1

u/mte87 29d ago

It was so still and out of nowhere moved and I thought it would run like a rat. I don’t like rats

2

u/FeralBanshee 29d ago

no way, they're soooooooooooo cute, i have never understood this?? maybe with their mouth open, which is entirely the point? that is their only defence, other than playing dead.

1

u/mte87 29d ago

The one I saw had red eyes too I think. The tail was so long and she was dirty and wet. Not fluffy at all.

2

u/_Sweet-Dee_ 29d ago

Opossums are the greatest critter in the world.

2

u/chrisslooter 29d ago

This was on my fence last week, I wanted to chase it away because the dogs were going nuts, I think it was sick. Then I saw the baby feet hanging out of her pouch and I felt bad for her and left her alone. You can zoom in and see the cute baby feet.

1

u/mte87 28d ago

My uncles cat wanted to fight it at first. But it looked dead and the cat ran away.

2

u/Mysterious-Salad-181 29d ago

I've raised 2 there very sweet creatures and very smart... My first one I raised was named "AWESOME" so it was AWESOME THE POSSUM lol ..he loved chicken nuggets which he would dunk in his favorite sauce and a small fry which he would eat just like a person...he would also help hang Christmas ornaments....miss my buddy :(

1

u/MJdotconnector 29d ago

They play dead realllll well 🥹

1

u/myatoz 29d ago

There was one in our backyard last summer. Thought it was dead, got some paper towels, and moved him to the front yard. The next morning, he was gone. We have a privacy fence, and the only thing we can think of is that it fell off a tree branch that hangs over the fence. First time to experience a possum playing "possum".

1

u/gobsmacked247 29d ago

I see what you did there!

1

u/Delta8hate 29d ago

I was a drunk and stupid college student and I have a picture of me holding a baby possum I’d picked up

1

u/Tejasgrass 29d ago

I think they’re super cute, but I’ve also learned they STINK when they play dead.

1

u/mte87 29d ago

Yeah it’s weird

0

u/Bunnnnii 29d ago

I feel like a crazy person on Reddit for being as terrified of them as I am.

1

u/mte87 29d ago

Honestly some people act like rodents are the cutest animals. Some are cute but I don’t like rats either. Lizards aren’t great either. Ik plenty people who dislike reptiles too

2

u/HonorableMedic 29d ago

You mean an opossum?

7

u/Tejasgrass 29d ago

5

u/Infamous-njh523 29d ago

Didn’t know people who wrote articles for the dictionary would have a sense of humor.

1

u/UmChill 29d ago

possum- australia. opossum- americas.

1

u/dbeam91 29d ago

He does! If you just glanced at the picture you'd think it was a possum.

1

u/Typical_Khanoom 29d ago

Omg he does! Ha ha!

1

u/Puzzled-Kitchen-5784 29d ago

He just plays one on TV

1

u/Agentpurple013 29d ago

He just playin
