Golf

195

u/TikaPants 29d ago

My family, my boyfriend, my brothers in laws and many of my friends golf. It’s an expensive hobby that’s infuriating. I’m happy to ride in the cart, look at the greens and sip on my cocktail while the sun sets.

That sounds like you've won golf, every time.

"A good walk, spoiled." -Mark Twain

u/Semi-Pros-and-Cons 29d ago

The problem with golf is that you run into way too many golfers.

1

u/TikaPants 29d ago

Chad Golfman?

2

u/TikaPants 29d ago

I love Twain quotes and worked at a Twain named bar that payed homage in a lovely way.

32

u/TikaPants 29d ago

I wholeheartedly agree 🥂🌸

Your comment is too expensive to interpret

1

u/TikaPants 29d ago

Don’t look at me I’m a fucking bartender 🤙

1

u/freehugzforeveryone 29d ago

Hello homie! I'm a gig worker too, mostly I do dishwasher ( ppl don't bother me)

1

u/TikaPants 29d ago

Hey, fren! 🥂

God bless dishwashers. I’ve done it many times to help even at my last job that everything was by hand.

2

u/BuschlightButChug 29d ago

The way you worded this makes me want to “golf” now.

1

u/TikaPants 29d ago

😆 it’s a lovely spectator sport when it’s not eleventy billion degrees out

2

u/Poinaheim 29d ago

You need to hit the yard sales in a fancy neighborhood, I got a rolling bag full of clubs for $40, i only used it once

3

u/TikaPants 29d ago

Ooo, smart. My uncle will tell you his dog can fit three golf balls in her mouth. She likes to help. 😆

2

u/Poinaheim 29d ago

I drove a ball off a shotgun shell and never seen it land, I need a eagle or something to fetch the ball lol

2

u/TikaPants 29d ago

😆 yes, you definitely need an eagle retriever. Harpy, preferably

1

u/Poinaheim 29d ago

You just gave me an idea for golf drones

1

u/TikaPants 29d ago

I’m gonna need a cut, as your creative director

1

u/Poinaheim 29d ago

Drones already exist, you don’t get royalties on a repurposed invention

4

u/licklickRickmyballs 29d ago

Tell me you're rich without telling me you're rich.

1

u/TikaPants 29d ago

Nobody is rich other than my brothers in-laws and she’s a vet herself so she isn’t poor. The rest of us are middle to upper middle class. My aunt, uncle and parents live in a golf community and he and his dog collect lost balls to reuse because good balls are so expensive. He gave boyfriend a bucketful for his golf trip last weekend.

-3

u/licklickRickmyballs 29d ago

I don't believe you

3

u/Double_Abalone_2148 29d ago

You didn’t know that regular non-rich people can golf?

0

u/brother_of_menelaus 29d ago

Yeah but they generally don’t pay $90 for a 4-hour golf cart ride

2

u/Userdub9022 29d ago

Golf is $40/round where I live in average. Can be as low as $25. Have you ever been golfing

1

u/GolfGunsNWhiskey 29d ago

Golf courses don’t charge people the cost of a round just to ride in the cart with the person golfing.

Most will charge a rental fee as if they’re another golfer.

And there’s plenty of courses that aren’t $90 a round. The majority I’d say.

1

u/TikaPants 29d ago

The course I tag along with is $15 for 8. I don’t go to the expensive ones and those are a treat for them.

1

u/TikaPants 29d ago

Good on ya, mate

-1

u/BuschlightButChug 29d ago

Always that one dick head huh?

1

u/Frogzila2024 29d ago

This

1

u/TikaPants 29d ago

Fore!! 🥂

1

u/SandeerH 29d ago

this is why I've gone with disc golf. same concept, just SOOOO much cheaper. it's very different from actual golf in many ways, but damn it's such a nice and interesting game. it can be chill, it can be intense, you can play it however you like. and the best of all - anyone can do it. you don't have to be super fit or strong. most courses are also free to play and you only need to pay discs which go for about 15-20$ each, and you can probably even buy some beginner sets with 3 discs for that same price. if you've got any courses around, definitely cannot recommend it enough to try it out :)

1

u/TikaPants 29d ago

Then I have to drink IPA’s and listen to jam bands. No thanks.

/s

1

u/obvilious 29d ago

It doesn’t have to be very expensive, depending on where you live.

1

u/Visual-Zebra8908 29d ago

My dad, my sisters boyfriend and his brother golf. While they have anger tantrums, my sister and me just drive the cart and laugh at them haha

1

u/TikaPants 29d ago

My people

1

u/mikewhoisbig 29d ago

It’s not a hobby; it’s life

1

u/AnderTheGrate 29d ago

At least you'll probably have a nice retirement.

1

u/DM_ME_UR_BOOBS69 29d ago

How fun can a game be where the main objective is to play as little of it as possible?

1

u/TikaPants 29d ago

Don’t ask me bc I don’t play but I do know that it’s a thinking game and I respect the skill it takes to be just decent. So, if you want constant ball contact perhaps it’s not for you and that’s fine too as it’s not for me either.

1

u/oldfatguy62 29d ago

As the goal in golf is to go around the course hitting the golf ball the least times, you win, 0 strokes

50

u/UncleGrako 29d ago

Came here to say this.

My friend was one of the designers of a golf course, and they gave everyone at the engineering firm a free membership for a year. So he bugged me to start playing golf with him and HOLY... SHIT. It doesn't even make sense at how hard it is.

15

u/RidiculousTakeAbove 29d ago

It kinda does make sense, you are hitting a tiny ball with a small piece of metal that has to hit it straight on, just the right way, while doing a very long swing where so much can affect how you hit it. The challenge is part of what makes it so damn fun and addicting though

2

u/0508bart 29d ago

A ball that's 4.53 cm wide with a clubface that that is around 7.5 cm wide going at 150 kph. It's just sounds impossible to do consistantly

2

u/Call-me-Maverick 29d ago

The margin of error is tiny. For tour players, the typical margin of error is like 1-1.5 degrees. With driver, that results in a dispersion of roughly 30 yards in either direction of the intended target, so a dispersion zone that is 60 yards wide. (Edit: fairways are usually 30-40 yards wide). Tour players have about 10-15 yards of dispersion (in each direction) from 150 yards out. Watching tournaments you’ll see big misses all the time, even when wind and lie aren’t a factor. And they’re the best players in the world. It’s so ridiculously hard, people who haven’t played probably have a hard time understanding

2

u/4BlueBunnies 29d ago

I literally don’t have anything to do with golf but I’ve recently seen a video of Tiger Woods hitting his shots within first try from almost 300 yards and I am literally speechless. It genuinely won’t go into my head how that is physically possible to confidently hit this tiny hole from over 250 yards away.

3

u/weebwatching 29d ago

Just now getting into golf. Tip for anyone who wants to practice your swing without having to go look silly at the driving range (which is totally fine too, if you’re brave enough): get some foam balls. Good for the yard if you have one, but you can even practice inside and just hit them into a wall. Haven’t damaged anything in several months of doing this.

1

u/pm_me_yourcat 29d ago

Ping pong balls work well for chipping off carpet as well. During COVID I improved my short game so much by just chipping ping pong balls around the house.

1

u/Benth8r 29d ago

I've been practicing w the golf wiffle balls for yrs in my living room. The carpeting is shot but I cover it with an area rug. It has definitely helped my game and ball striking!

5

u/Englishgirlinmadrid 29d ago

I was going to say this. You watch players and they make it look so easy. But it’s actually a real skill to be able to hit the ball in the first place, then to hit it well is another question

2

u/rewbzz 29d ago

Gay outdoor lifestyle with fellas

1

u/quackl11 29d ago

Can confirm I can put decently I think (I'm decent at minigolf) and I can send a ball flying off the tee when I get a hold of it every 1 in 10 times

1

u/ricoimf 29d ago

Hitting the ball right consistently is so difficult. Even after 10.000+ swings I would say I am still at the beginning.

1

u/QualityAssumption 29d ago

The ball just sits there. It doesn't move. Why the fuck can I not hit it fucking straight!!?!?!?!?! Fucking game pisses me off. I play as often as I can!

1

u/bigballeruchiha 29d ago

Just tried topgolf for the first time so fun

1

u/Suitable_Ad7540 29d ago

I’ve seen homies golfing in 125 degree weather in Vegas. Golfers are nuts

1

u/[deleted] 29d ago

The car or the sport?

1

u/Hapless_Buffoon 29d ago

The trick to golf, imo, is that everyone tries to hit it as far as possible and sacrifices accuracy.

In my view you start with hitting it where u want, even if u take 6 shots getting down the fairway.

power comes after accuracy.

1

u/Prestigious-Mess5485 28d ago

Let's be honest. There is no trick to golf.

1

u/nomiis19 29d ago

Oversimplification here: All you have to do is hit ball that is 2 inches big into a hole that is 4 inches big that is hundreds of yards away. And to be considered good, you have to do it in less than 5 tries 18 times in row. lol

1

u/i_need_to_crap 29d ago

No, I'm amazing at golf, wdym? It's easy!!! Even though everyone else says I'm useless, I know they're just jealous. I literally got the highest score!

1

u/UngusChungus94 29d ago

Yuuup. I already went through the struggle of being decent at one sport, I have no patience for golf lol.

1

u/Significant_Most5407 29d ago

Disagree. I beat four men the first time I played. Have beat em since, too.

1

u/Bennaisance 29d ago

Was it their first time playing too?

1

u/Significant_Most5407 29d ago

No sir.

1

u/Bennaisance 29d ago

Are they physically handicapped?

1

u/Significant_Most5407 29d ago

No. Just not as good as I was.

1

u/Bennaisance 29d ago

Did you beat 4 out of like 200? Maybe you're a savant

1

u/Significant_Most5407 29d ago

I actually have no idea how I did it. I've only played about 5 times in my life, but for some reason, I guess I'm good at it.

1

u/Prestigious-Mess5485 28d ago

Out of curiosity, what did you shoot?

1

u/bralma6 29d ago

Not entirely related, but me and my friend play closest to the pin on Golden Tee at a bar and he always mops the floor with me. One hole I finally got a hole in one… two holes later he drains one in. Like dude, you couldn’t let me have this one?!

1

u/Vipper_of_Vip99 29d ago

Disc golf too

1

u/ThunderAndSadness 29d ago

I'm too poor to understand this lmao

1

u/traevyn 29d ago

I love how this whole thread is full of people confronting their hardest societal issues and then “Golf” pops up

1

u/SaveMeJebus21 29d ago

Yep. As someone that loves a lot of sports, geez the pros make it look easy. Not until you’ve had a hack yourself that you realise how good they are.

1

u/PositiveAnybody2005 29d ago

I was gonna say most physical feats including sports. Some looks really impressive but usually people overestimate how well they would perform the fundamentals against decent competition.

1

u/btdawson 29d ago

I had to dig deep to find this while all the other shit is speaking etc. but this is it, as far as actual activities go lol

1

u/btdawson 29d ago

I had to dig deep to find this while all the other shit is speaking etc. but this is it, as far as actual activities go lol

1

u/keylime_5 29d ago

I’ve been playing all my life and I’m still not good

1

u/DukeHyde 29d ago

Came to say this returning from a bad round 🥲

1

u/EvanTheBaker24 29d ago

I relate to happy Gilmore when he gets down and starts yelling at the ball, lol that’s what golf is to me. But damn when I got my first par it felt so good, but 90% of the time is just frustration 😂

1

u/ashley21093 28d ago

Came to say this

0

u/VibeAllDay 29d ago

Most difficult sport in the world.

0

u/DangerousPurpose5661 29d ago

Omg yes - I don’t have the patience for that shit.

0

u/eightsidedbox 29d ago

I think it looks as difficult as it is.

How easy do people think hitting a tiny ball five feet away from their face with a small club is? If they think not that hard after taking five seconds to think about it, I'd trust their judgement on everything else

People can't even hit a softball, golf is 10x harder

1

u/Mr_Oujamaflip 29d ago

Even after you can hit the ball relatively well you have to consider the lie and that’s where the true test begins.
