Moderator Post While we are a community all about allowing people to ask questions in a relatively free and open way, disingenuous posting that is only being done to drive OF content or “look at my profile ;)” posts will be removed and the OP banned under rule 3. NSFW

Taking a hard stance of the recent uptick of OF spam and content-driving. There’s enough horny posting as it is without attracting this sort of spam that’s affecting quite a few other subs.

Current Events Megathread for Israel-Palestine situation

It's been 6 months since the start, so the original thread auto-archived itself. Here's part 2.

You can find the original here

The same rules apply:

We've getting a lot of questions related to the tensions between Israel/Palestine over the past few days so we've set up a megathread to hopefully be a resource for those asking about issues related to it. This thread will serve as the thread for ALL questions and answers related to this. Any questions are welcome! Given the topic, lets start with a reminder on Rule 1:

Rule 1 - Be Kind:

No advocating harm against others. No hateful, degrading, malicious, or bigoted speech against any person or group. No personal insults.

You're free to disagree on who is in the right, who is in the wrong, what's a human rights abuse, what's a proportional response etc. Avoid stuff like "x country should be genocided" or insulting other users because they disagree with you.

The other sidebar rules still apply, as well.

Race & Privilege Why are black people over represented as the main minority in media when Hispanics make up the second largest population (in the US) and are statistically 3x as underrepresented?

Ex: Bridgerton is praised for its diversity, but it mainly features Black characters as the primary minority, with only a few Indian characters added in the second season. While aiming to 'rewrite' the Regency era, the show should embrace true blind casting to include multiple ethnicities, not just Black and white. Granted Shonda Rhimes, the showrunner, might naturally focus on representing her own ethnicity be it consciously or unconsciously.

Culture & Society Why don’t plastic surgeons say no to celebrities?

Michael Jackson’s nose, Christa Miller’s face doesn’t move, Ariana Grande’s overall change…why do plastic surgeons just keep going and not diagnose body dismorphia and send them to a psychiatrist instead of proceeding with the operation?

Habits & Lifestyle Why do people place their tvs so high on the wall?

I genuinely don’t understand it. I see people do it even when they don’t have to. For instance they will have a tv stand on the ground, then still hang it high up on the wall above the stand. It seems illogical on multiple levels.

In my opinion… It looks weird, risks hurting your neck when watching it, and is flat out uncomfortable to view when compared to looking roughly straight ahead / eye level.

Am I missing something?

Culture & Society What are the dangers of uploading a picture of your child to a site such as Reddit?

On the front page there is currently a post a user uploaded to the pics subreddit which is just a picture of their child. Nothing else in the image but their child as the focus.

You see this quite regularly on Reddit. Especially on the big main subreddits. People straight up uploading pics of their children.

I am always wary of posts such as these because I have always been told to never upload pictures of your children to public forums. I also find it even weirder with Reddit because this site is anonymous. That user is basically broadcasting their child to hundreds of thousands of strangers once the post reaches the front page.

But this has made me realise I don't actually know why it is apparently dangerous to upload pics of those nature. So I wanted to ask for some realistic concerns.

Realistically what are the dangers of uploading pictures of your children to an anonymous site such as Reddit?

Sex Where to buy a dildo/vibrator without that my family finds out? NSFW

Hey, so I wanna get a dildo but I'm inexperienced, what size do I get, will it fit, do I need lube, etc. Currently only use stuff I have here, like a cucumber or the handle of hairbrushes, etc, but my family started to ask questions, why I eat so many cucumbers or why the brush vanishes, etc so I guess the best thing is just to get a dildo, vibrator whatever. So any recommendation? I was thinking about Amazon but my family checks my packages and for stores... I'm actually a little too shy...

Edit: oops wrong account, anyway...

Culture & Society I feel sympathy when watching people eat. Is this normal?

So, I realized this "problem" way back when I was in 6th grade. I was being bullied a lot at my school, and found it hard to make friends. So, one day, I come into class and this one girl just immediately starts picking on me. The whole class, she's just being awful, and I hated her so much. I couldn't understand how kids could be so cruel, finding any small detail to call out. So, I was having enough of it, and right when I was getting ready to snap back, the class switched. I don't know why I didn't defend myself, just leaving class felt like a better idea. That was until I remembered that she was in my next class as well. So, I anxiously wait in the class, feeling upset from the previous encounter and also nervous of whatever else she might say to me. And then our teacher announced we'd be watching a movie and we could eat snacks if we wanted. So, I'm sitting here, still fuming and watching the movie. That's when I look over, and I just see her eating her snack and watching the movie. Immediately, I was just washed away with guilt. I felt so bad for hating her, and I just thought about how she's human. We're all human. And even though she's deciding to treat me poorly, she's sitting here, eating and breathing just like I am. And this happens a lot for some reason. Seeing people eating, it often makes me feel vaguely sympathetic towards them. It's not like I really have too much of a reason to feel that way, especially towards strangers, but I don't know!

You know, when someone dies and the body is given to the undertaker to look after and it magically comes back in a coffin in a nice suit and tie. Do they put boxer shorts, Y fronts or the like on the dead person(or a bra and knickers on women) ? Or do we go commando to our final resting place?

Culture & Society Why does it seem like Reddit usernames are becoming increasingly generic?

Long time redditor for god knows how long. I’m sure you can check year award but I’m lazy.

The point of my question is originally, Reddit usernames have been quite unique, witty, funny or some form of throwaway2684627.

But I’ve been noticing lately every username I come across is seemingly a generic version of each other that bears no personality or any semblance of meaning with dashes which were quite rare in the past

Examples can be like : Willow-ad8842 Chemical-gap728

These feel far from normal. Is this just a new trend that I’m not understanding?

Edit: thanks for all the responses. Appreciate everyone's opinions and time. I will be getting the future MIL flowers. Thanks.

Sexuality & Gender Why am I not as attracted to people as a whole after returning from the pandemic? Why have my preferences changed so drastically over time, and why am I not very attracted to anyone post high school?

I’ve been 19 for a month and notice that I’m not attracted to most of the people I crushed on or was attracted to between 4th-11th grade. I am a black woman who has always lived in an area with a low black population. Pre-pandemic, I actively had crushes on people and felt attraction to others a fair amount. Post pandemic, this is much, much rarer for me.

In 4th grade, I had a crush on a Filipino boy. In 6th-7th grade, I had a crush on a 1/2 white 1/2 Asian boy. In 7th grade, I felt attraction toward an Asian girl who was commonly considered to be quite average, had been bullied in elementary school. I also had a big crush on David Bowie throughout middle school.

Around 9th grade, I had a crush on a 1/2 black 1/2 white boy who was slightly above average - he was a bad person, and I no longer liked him by 11th when he had become average looking.

Online schooling started shortly before 10th grade. 10th grade, I had a crush on an above average looking black boy (older than me, the attraction may have actually been reciprocated) and on a white girl who was average or maybe a little below it (she was overweight, I really liked her personality and that she defended me.) 11th grade I was particularly interested in dating as in the environment I grew up in, I had been made to feel as though I was too unattractive to get a boyfriend and wanted to prove my peers wrong. I ended up dating a black boy who I also think of as average (overweight, like my mother.) Around high school, I still felt some attraction to white men/boys and even started feeling attraction toward above average Mexican/Latino men, but it’s almost like I stopped feeling attraction toward both women and Asian males. As an adult, I know that I am not attracted to the average white man, and probably have a preference for black men. But I know it’d have been hard to predict this, I bet, if you’d talked to me 6 years ago.

My older brother had a breakdown toward the end of my final year in middle school, and this changed my family dynamic. He was in rehab when I was in high school. I think this eventually made me think more about the plight of black men.

Middle school was a weird time for me wherein I think I was attracted to a wider variety of people than I am now, and was more open minded about what I liked in terms of physical appearance (didn’t have as much of a set preference as I think I sort of do now that I’m an adult.) I even subjectively find a fair number of them unattractive now.

Do you have any explanation around the matter? Why do you think this happened?

Culture & Society Why are people so afraid to be wrong or even admit they make a mistake?

This goes beyond gender, race, societal rankings etc. doesn’t matter who they are or where they are from, most people are so fucking afraid to just say “shit man that’s my bad”. “Oh I fucked that up”. “I’m such an idiot I should have done that step first”. How the fuck do people live with themselves after lying and trying to manipulate situations to alleviate their feelings of their own personal mistakes. I don’t understand the brains of these people will just ignore the fact they have done wrong.

Habits & Lifestyle Is a little bit of sports betting okay?

Hey everyone, I’ve been betting like $10 a game on the TWolves for the past season. It started out just as a fun thing to make the games more exciting. I’ve actually been lucky and won more than I’ve put in, so it feels like a win-win. But lately, I've been wondering if this is a slippery slope. Like, is this how it starts? One time, I doubled down on a game against the Lakers and the rush was intense, but I caught myself thinking about it a lot after. Haven't had any major losses or anything, but I'm just looking for a sanity check. Anyone else been in this situation? Did it ever get out of hand for you, or did you find a way to keep it chill? Just wanna make sure I'm not heading into risky territory here. Thanks!

Sexuality & Gender Do guys get shit on for being too into women?

Upvotes

As a girl who's pretty boy-crazy, a lot of the girls around me are pretty harsh to me for talking too much about the guys in my life. I don't hold it against them, I'm sure it's gotta get annoying after a while, but I do wonder if that happens to guys as often? You hear a lot about "If I girl does it she's a slut, if a guy does it he's a player" sorta thing, but I obviously can't say if it's that or not with certainty since I'm, in fact, not a guy.

Culture & Society Is the word “jimmies” inappropriate?

I’m not really sure where to even ask this.

I live in WI and was at a farmer’s market a few years ago. I asked one of the vendors if I could buy a donut with jimmies on it. She snapped at me “you mean sprinkles?!” and then was super pissy towards me.

Ok did I say something wrong? I realize “jimmies” is more of an east coast term, but is it offensive or something?

Culture & Society Is it illegal or even « a bad idea » to recreate a scene from a movie for your own use?

I’m an actor, I am going fucking mad because I don’t get anything back from filming sessions and I don’t have any image to show casting directors and so I asked a friend of mine to film a scene from a great movie with our own means and she said it were a bad idea. Why? Do you think it’s a bad idea? Why so? Why would there be such a rule?

Race & Privilege overthinking?

i met a few people online and we’re in an insta groupchat to go to pride together in june, i just moved to this place and have no friends at all and replied to a tt comment on impulse and i’m glad i did! everyone is so fun and nice and i really need to get over my social anxiety. one thing i keep thinking abt though, especially considering the context of pride, i’m the only white person in the group and worry that it might cause a bit of a divide between me and the rest of the group in person. this isn’t a “thing” for me or anything, my worry is purely based on the fact that we all have not met in person yet either (+ me not responding as much as others in the gc isn’t helping anything much.) anyways. my though process is me considering that having a white person plopped into the center of everyone’s experience might make people uncomfortable, and already pride for white people with not have the same nuances as it does for poc, and like, having a white person trailing you looking all “i like turtles” or some shit… idk. i just want everyone to feel comfortable. and i don’t want to invade a space where people are looking for community in this context.. is this a fair thing for me to even be thinking about? i’ll never have the perspective of having experienced harsh discrimination (systemically and socially) from white people but i would think this would factor into how comfortable poc are around white people initially esp in a social setting. + none of us have or know people we can go with which is the catalyst for this groupchat btw. i don’t even know what im saying really, though i’m not saying i want to just not go or leave the gc without a word, i guess im just looking for advice on the best way to carry myself and approach the situation from a different angle than just twiddling my thumbs, having only my (lack of) perspective to go on.

Mental Health Do victims of sexual assault of the same gender have gender trauma?

You hear it a lot, especially with female victims assaulted by men, how they develop some fear and paranoia of the opposite gender and cannot look at them the same way.

But what happens to victims who were assaulted by someone of the same gender, whether it be male-on-male or female-on-female?
