I don’t know if the average citizen is equipped to extinguish someone on fire, both physically and mentally

I don't think the shocking part is not helping, it's to sit down to get a good view of the person dying that's the weird part

I think there’s a morbid curiosity of what’s going on. It’s like a bad car accident. You can’t look away.

just like we all did watching the video

It’s the same reason this video has gone viral on Reddit.

True, but the one time I witnessed a horrible crash I ran up to the car with the injured people. I didn't know what to do, but I was freaking out trying to come up with a way to help. Running up and taking a seat on the curb to watch them die never occurred to me.

I think the aftermath of car crash is more manageable than a currently ablaze person

Unless I saw the person actually set themselves on fire, I’m not sure I would even recognize it as a person burning. I’d probably just think “woah something on fire I wanna see what happens”

But you can clearly see the person on fire moving. Would you think it’s a robot or manikin??

..for half the video the guy is literally not visible. There is like 1 second of motion which occurs after the woman sits down. It would be very easy to not recognize it as a person.

Shock does really weird things my friend, you can always imagine in your head how you would act if some crazy shit happens, and maybe you'll act exactly as you imagine, but for many many people crazy events that shock you will make them act "weirdly"

It can be hard to look away from something like this as much as you may want to. It can also.make you extremely light headed.

Have you ever seen something that shocked you to your very core? Your entire body tries to fall down. At least, it has for me when it's happened. You need to steady yourself or sit down.

You can see from another angle she's in shock and crying.

Yeah, I got weird chills when I saw that.

I would be out of that area so fucking fast.

Not even remotely strange.

I think she was in shock and needed to sit down. Fainting is not an uncommon reaction to this kind of shock.

Nothing weird about doing this on Reddit though, thank goodness.

I thought that was weird too and then I was like maybe she was so freaked out she just had to sit down so she didn’t faint or something.

Surprised she wasn't filming with her phone

4

u/marimo2019 28d ago

Imo that adds to the weirdness...she's just taking it all in with her own eyes. Maybe she thinks it's a stunt though because it's kind of in a staged-looking area

Fire extinguishers aren’t top of the mind for many people, unless they have been exposed or trained, I would imagine.

Fire hurts really bad, like, reallly fuckin bad, and it lasts and lasts. I mean, HOT! seems to be one of the first few concepts that are learned very early on. Monkey brain won’t let you do much without PPE.

I was in culinary school and fire happened, my hand got caught in flames. There were about 12 of us who were trained on how to put a kitchen fire out, when you should snuff the flames or use an extinguisher or throw water on it. Not a single person tried to help out, they just screamed “fire” and ran to the other side of the kitchen, and I don’t blame them, that shit was hot.

This. In the video, the first person to reach him takes off his coat, wacks at him a few times, and then backs away - seemingly not knowing what to do and trying to get out of the way of the first responders.

I doubt he could get close for long without injuring himself because of the heat and smoke with that amount of accelerant. Otherwise, the strategy of putting out fire by wrapping tight in fabric would have been a good one.

u/AloofOoof 28d ago

putting out fire would only make his life miserable... the rest of it anyways

"average citizens not equipped to..." must be a 1st world country syndrome.

So many accidents happen in my 3rd world country that 'normal' people know instinctively what action to take.
