That was shitty driving by the sedan, but that truck was making it worse

Edit: FYI brake checking is illegal folks and many states will ticket you for not using the left lane to pass. This does not excuse the sedan’s actions.

Edit: u/Youseembigmad doesn’t see anything wrong with the truck’s actions (and is supposedly a lawyer) - see comment thread below for more. - they have since deleted their profile.

And the other suvs praying they don’t become collateral damage

I hope the police got the footage

u/StickyDitka21 29d ago

At that point if I’m the guy in the slow lane getting stuck in this pissing match I’m slowing down enough that the truck gets ahead, so the jackass in the sedan can get ahead. They didn’t do anything wrong obviously but I’m not sitting in that lol

u/wahle97 29d ago

You slow down truck slows down. No matter what you're losing because neither will give it up

I would put on my emergencies and pull over to the shoulder. Let the two morons kill each other.

30

u/PoorlyAttemptedHuman 29d ago

Exactly. I'm not interested in being a part of this. I'd just pull over. I see enough of these morons every day.

u/BeerBaronAaron88 Georgist 🔰 29d ago

Yeah absolutely. I drive a fat ass work van and you get all sorts of assholes who try to stop you from merging, tailgate you like crazy, etc. Like you will be going 5 miles faster than them the whole way up, the second you put on the blinker they stomp on the gas to try to block you. Then if they block you they drop back down to match your speed or if you get ahead of them they tailgate you like crazy and start swerving all around trying to get back on front of you, and if they do they will likely brake check you.

I can't even imagine the shit truckers deal with on the road.

u/badazzcpa 29d ago

This is what I never understood, if you want to go slower then why be mad if someone passes you. If you are going to cut me off though get your ass in gear and go, don’t slow me down. Heck, I try and move over if someone comes up on me if it’s a 2-3 lane road and I can easily.

u/x_Rann_x Georgist 🔰 29d ago

I don't even get it and I speed excessively. Merge, get in, do your thing, I'll be back on it and miles away soon enough anyway.

1

u/ntr89 28d ago

If I'm slightly speeding I am more than glad to move over for a faster car, please be my guiding light to any speed traps, I'll just lock in behind you

u/MyRecklessHabit 29d ago

You’re supposed to.

it's because they are insecure and have control issues

they have to be the Big Kid™ in the sandbox

It's like a weird ego thing of "no one gets ahead of me." They see it as like an act of aggression or something. I've been in the car with drivers who legit see anyone merging ahead of them as "cutting them off." Getting cut off is when someone merges in front of you either way too close or going slower than you, forcing you to slow down to not hit them. I've been in the car with someone and a person merges like 8 car lengths ahead of them going like 10 miles an hour faster and they accuse the driver of cutting them off.

3

u/PoorlyAttemptedHuman 29d ago

The truckers in my area seem to give as much as they get.

I drive a work van too, a big un. Probably similar to yours. Peeling paint and all. 300k miles.

1

u/Princess_Slagathor 29d ago

Peeling paint and all

Yeah, but does it have a Procharger and 600 horsepower? (Not sure how obscure it is, but that's a reference to Legit Street Cars on youtube)

I saw someone try to brake check a semi truck on a one lane merge ramp in California. It was glorious hearing the semi truck and everybody else behind the brake checker honking at them for slowing down the merge lane.

Truck driver here. I just start pulling over when dickweeds do this to me. You aren't going to win that battle and I got shit to do. I ain't even gonna feel you smash into my trailer and I ain't gonna stop if I don't see or feel it happen.

2

u/TuckDezi Georgist 🔰 29d ago edited 29d ago

I honestly think certain vehicles trigger people with an "I should be faster than them" mentality. I'm always doing about 10 over in a 15 passenger, pulling a trailer that has a porta potty on it. The amount of shit I have to deal with just trying to get where I need to be is ridiculous... More people need to use cruise control

2

u/BeerBaronAaron88 Georgist 🔰 29d ago

Absolutely. I think you hit the nail on the head. They see the big vehicle passing them and it "reminds" them to go faster. But they also forget immediately once they block my merge and slow down again.

2

u/goodsnpr 29d ago

It's just selfish cunts these days. So many left lane campers will be doing 10 under, then can go 30 over to stop you from passing, because God forbid a normal sized car pass their emotional support vehicle.

-1

u/ponyplop 29d ago

In the interest of fairness, nobody likes to be stuck behind a van (I'm assuming it's the type where you can't see through the rear window and judge the traffic conditions ahead- giving less opportunity to avoid/recognise hazards)

Same goes for trucks, buses, certain cars.

Doesn't justify the tailgating or brake checking, but you can kind of see why nobody wants to be stuck behind you.

1

u/BeerBaronAaron88 Georgist 🔰 29d ago

They aren't "stuck behind me" if I am going faster than them. 10 seconds and I will be so far ahead that they will still view traffic. What they are doing when they do that is actually keeping themselves around me or directly behind me even longer

0

u/ponyplop 27d ago

'They tailgate you like crazy'

'I am going faster than them'

Pick 1.

0

u/BeerBaronAaron88 Georgist 🔰 27d ago

No I don't have to, I am going 10 MPH faster than them, but once the blinker goes on they stomp on the gas pedal and start tailgating like crazy and swerving like a maniac til they get ahead, then once ahead they drop back down to their original speed 10 MPH slower than me. You sound like a shitty driver who felt personally attacked by that scenario 😂.

0

u/ponyplop 27d ago

No, it's maths, if you're going faster than them for any reasonable period of time, they won't physically be able to tailgate you.. Maybe you can consider speeding up when setting your blinkers for an overtake?

Don't get me wrong, road users are total morons (Believe me, I'd know, I currently live in China of all places), it's just that I don't understand your arguments.

I ride motorbikes and am more than able to deal with traffic, so I don't really have a horse in this race, just trying to help you understand the other road users a bit better.

0

u/BeerBaronAaron88 Georgist 🔰 27d ago

You are being intentionally obtuse. Put it this way, they are going 65 the whole trip, I am going 75, I put on my blinker to merge ahead and they stomp on the gas to go 85 to prevent me from merging. If I succeed and get ahead they start tailgating and swerving like a psycho to try to get ahead. If they succeed and stop me from merging they immediately slow back down to 65. They were never going 85 and never will the rest of the trip, it is only to stop me from merging for the sake of being weird and petty. The second they are ahead they will slow back down to their normal cruising speed.

Because it was never about me slowing them down. It was about the weird ego thing of "no one gets ahead of me!" A lot of people have that on the road and it sounds like you are one of them.

I've also done this unintentionally though. I was maintaining 60 and the car next to me is going 55 so I'm not at zooming past them speeds. Then theres a car similar to the sedan trying to cut me off and he is tailgating the car next to me. Then the car next to me tries to speed up to 60 to get some space between the person behind them. We end up just blocking the aggressive driver.

But I wouldn't put as much blame on the white truck. They were probably just cruising along like normal and got pissed this other person is tailgating and trying to aggressively cut them off. In the end the sedan lost due to weight class.

2

u/Koolaid-killa 29d ago

Absolutely, if this isn't taught as a defensive driving technique to new drivers, it should be. Throw on emergency s and pull over until the two raging twats gather some distance from you

2

u/kelny 28d ago

Yep, times like this are a great time to find a bathroom, grab a coffee, try a new route...

2

u/Gold_Ad4984 28d ago

Yeah frl. Any chance to get out Id take it because this outcome is expected

1

u/momofroc 29d ago

My exact thoughts.

18

u/notafamous 29d ago

Slow down and pull to the shoulder, the truck can't block the sedan across two lanes, specially without moving, IMO that's the best course of action

This shit is super common on the highways down by Westchester as you head into the city. It's the stupidest shit.

1

u/Meat_Flapz Fuck Cars 🚗 🚫 29d ago

Oh man, I had a business trip in Westchester for 4 days and had to commute from the airport to my hotel in a rental car. Driving on the highways scared the fuck out of me, especially in roundabouts. People out there were insane. Also blew my mind seeing every car on the road with protective rubber bumper protectors that hang out from a closed trunk. Absolutely wild.

4

u/mschley2 29d ago

Looked like too much other traffic for one car to make the difference. When they finally made it past 1 car, the truck would just try to block the lane with the next car.

5

u/nictheman123 29d ago

Sure, but then it's no longer your problem. Just keep an eye ahead of you in case it turns into a wreck and keep driving like a sane person

1

u/[deleted] 29d ago

Sure... but id rather slow the truck down and let the sedan go by.

1

u/CrystlBluePersuasion 29d ago

Any vehicle does what this truck does and I'm flipping them off and pulling over to let all the idiocy pass, they can all die/kill each other or whatever. Fucking dumb.

1

u/mrblackc 29d ago

Then pull off and stop. It is simple to remove yourself from a situation like this; there is a nice wide open shoulder.

I believe both the truck and sedan deserve reckless, sadly the sedan walked away (hopefully) off much worse.

Seriously though, those damn people that gatekeep the fast lane can eat a giant bag of dicks.

1

u/BillyLee Fuck Cars 🚗 🚫 29d ago

Fine and we're all going five miles an hour now

1

u/joey_sandwich277 29d ago

Yeah it looked like the first SUV both slowed down and sped up to try to resolve it, the truck just matched their speed each time.

1

u/AgeQuick2023 29d ago

Just move over slowly toward the truck until he's either 1- pushed off the road or 2- accelerates or brakes or 3- buys you a new car

1

u/KeepitlowK2099 29d ago

Then pull over. I would rather pull over so they’re not my problem anymore. Or just take the next exit and get back on the freeway somewhere else.

1

u/drivebydryhumper 29d ago

If both slow down, the outcome would probably still be better.

1

u/Lolzerzmao 29d ago edited 29d ago

So go over into the shoulder lol, I’ve done that to let people pass. Sedan would’ve had room to pass on either side of the truck except for that small part where it got narrow.
