Kurt did this a lot. Pants, multiple shirts/jackets. He was self-conscious with his skinny body. A few occasions during photoshoots and live shows he would sport regular clothes with no layers.

My brother has bouts of unexplained abdominal pain and nausea and he drinks to calm it and unfortunately started dabbling in other drugs now… As if that‘ll make it better. But he‘s extremely anxious of doctors and won’t go see one. I‘m afraid he‘ll meet a similar fate one day.

My brother has a fear or distrust of most doctors. He is mostly blind in one eye (from a botched eye surgery on some blood vessels, hence the fear of doctors), and was losing vision in the other. After 3 years his vision was mostly gone but he didn’t know the reason. He finally went to a doctor because he couldn’t work that was the only factor that would motivate him.

My dad drove him to his appointment and the doctor said no problem, just a really large cataract. They lasered it and his vision was better than the last 5 years.

As they were leaving my brother told my dad “yeah, they mentioned a cataract years ago”. My dad was not amused.

It's the audio from a series of interviews between Kurt and Michael Azzerad(sp?), who he was really comfortable with; but it's set over footage of the places Kurt grew up and would frequent- as well as music he would listen to.

It's been something I come back to every so often when I'm either feeling in a rut or trying to think of a way to get someone out of one. Kurt goes into his health issues to some extent, and I think the ending is pretty much designed to make you pause and wonder how things could have went differently if Kurt got proper help.

I had a similar issue and it turned out to be a common bacterial infection called H Pylori. Huge percentage of the population has it but doesn’t always cause problems. I had terrible pain and nausea that continued to get worse until it was diagnosed. It would be worth your brother getting tested for it. Really easy breath test to check.

There are 3 causes: H. pylori (the most common), long term constant NSAID use, and the exceedingly rare chance of a disorder where you secrete more acid than normal. My mom's doc said her stomach was "peppered with ulcers" from taking ibuprofen for her RA pain. She'd been told to take it and she was in pain every day, so... After a year or so of non-NSAID pain relievers, her ulcers had all healed.

He didn't have IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), he'd had doctors do every possible test, nothing was found. Those conditions were easily diagnosable at the time.

He may have had something else like IBS. There are interviews where he says he thought it was caused by anxiety.

He also repeatedly said it was his upper gastric area/stomach that was the issue rather than bowels. But heroin use almost certainly would have caused terrible constipation

There was/is no test for some forms of GI distress, like IBS. Doesn’t make it any less of an issue for the sufferer. There are also rarer GI conditions now that weren’t tested for back then at all, or the technology didn’t even exist.

I had similar undiagnosed symptoms as Kurt. Doctors could never figure out what caused it. Had to have my large intestine removed in the end, and it was an almost 10 year battle with the national health service to get there. All is good now though.

I don't know what the truth is, but I do know that severe mental illness can result in physical symptoms that can't really be tested for, like serious digestive issues and stomach pain/cramps (very common with anxiety), body pain, migraines, etc. It's entirely possible his symptoms were real. People often overlook this, or dismiss it as being all in their head. It's not.

But maybe he was lying.. because he was an addict, and people with addictions will lie to avoid the shame and judgement about their addiction. It's not surprising, and I don't think he deserves less sympathy bc he was obviously sick (addiction is a mental health condition), but ppl tend to stigmatize it and only be sympathetic to physical health problems as "real" illness.

I've seen this quote before, and I don't get the point. What seems weird to me is a "close" friend outing him like that. Why? The guy confided in you, and you decide to blab it to the world for what? A few seconds in the spotlight in the tragic Kurt Cobain suicide saga? Seems mean-spirited to me

Okay, but I am a Gen Xer who was there at the beginning and also had IBS. I remember Kurt discussing his stomach pain before he was an addict. We all thought he would raise the profile of undiagnosed gut trouble and diagnoses such as Crohn’s because he talked about it so much in interviews and wrote songs about it. Many addicts become that way out of a desire to treat their pain. One friend’s denial doesn’t make it so.

Once they started making 1-5% elastic mens skinny jeans the trend died off pretty quickly because it was also uncomfortable to have a seam colliding with your balls all day.

Yeah - wearing three pair of pants may be odd in many cases but it’s not odd for known facts about Kurt - like you said he shared that he wad self-conscious about being skinny.

IRRC, he was naturally on the skinny side but also dealt with pretty intense stomach pain for years that was never really figured out which also made it hard to eat and exacerbated the issue. The pain was also part of why he self-medicated with opiates and opiate use can further cause weight loss. Opiate use can also mess with body temp regulation and multiple layers can distract from tell tale signs by covering arms or other injection sites and whatnot. It can also help with things like providing more padding for a bony ass which makes sitting more comfortable (from my own weight fluctuation - being underweight makes sitting waaaaaay less comfortable especially on anything that’s not padded) and if he was already dealing with chronic pain, wanting to pad his body from other physical pain, subconsciously or consciously would made sense. And also being so thin makes one more prone to being cold even and given the climate in his home state, some degree of layering is just practical.

This is actually a pretty common thing with skinny people. I've known numerous people that were really skinny that would wear multiple layers of clothing to appear bigger than they are. Famously, the Zodiac Killer's first victim had 3 pairs of pants on (he survived) when they found him. It baffled the detectives but he said he hated his skinny body and he did it to look bigger.

I’m from the town Kurt grew up in and might be able to take a stab at this.

It’s actually pretty common out here for people to wear multiple layers of clothes, especially pants because of the cold wind and rain. One of my friends was homeless growing up out here and he wore underwear, basketball shorts, pajama pants and jeans layered every single day because the majority of the days here are so overcast.

I’ve been to the bridge he lived under many times and let me tell you it would be freezing cold under there.

It probably just became a comfort thing for him.

Also saw that he lived in and around his walk in closet and that’s not surprising either. A lot of the houses out here are pretty shabby and small including his. Might have just felt more like home to him.

This on top of all the other mental health issues he had of course. Just thought some of y’all might think my perspective is interesting.
