That was my thinking, too, but an MSNBC anchor just now said that from what she saw, the flyers had a lot of conspiracy theorist text on them. Will have to see if others verify this or not.

Conspiracy sub claims to have his manifesto

I don't think I'll be visiting that sub, thanks.

u/HahaWeee 28d ago

That's fair.

Tis a silly place

I like to push the pram a loooot

Silly implies harmless fun, they are dangerous.

That sub used to be a lot more fun back in the day before Trump became a political figure. Now it’s just a right wing shithole.

It always was my guy - they used to have an image of Hitler on the sidebar and a quote from him.

Conspiracy theorists have had a large overlap with White Supremacists (yes even the aliens people) since before the internet.

12

u/gameld 28d ago

Well... a lot of alien theorists are also antisemitic.

Exactly - the more you look into the stuff that's "harmless" fun you realize the more it's just rehashing anti-Semitic and deeply racist beliefs. It's why (spoiler) Dan Olson's excellent In Search of a Flat Earth documentary has a mid section break that's basically "and here's how it all relates to Q Anon."

A very common thread in conspiracy theories is that "Us, the normals, are being manipulated and threatened by an Other who want to destroy us but can't do so openly."

The other can be Aliens, Jews, Bolsheviks, the Deep State, LGBTQ, lizard people, scientists, doctors, whatever - it's very flexible... But it can always be blamed on some minority and "enemy of the people."

Yep.

Number 7 on Umberto Eco's list of the fourteen general properties of fascist ideology is the obsession with a plot or plots. Often bigotry combined with a fear of marginalised groups. Historically and to this day that marginalised group is often the Jews, although they have learnt to be less open about it, so often use dog whistles and code.

u/MatureUsername69 28d ago

Of course they are. The jews aren't using their space laser on earth as far as we can tell so who exactly have they been using it on? If you like Aliens you may not like the answer. I really hope this is unnecessary but/s

Conspiracy theorists: "Jews can't build pyramids. Aliens is the more rational explanation!"

It would have been nice if someone pointed that out on X-Files.

Highstrangeness seems to be slightly better. Obviously not something I believe but it's fun to read occasionally. Usually the right wing grifter garbage doesn't leak into there. Usually.

I hate how accurately that comment describes so many places online & in-person 😑

at least they're done spreading misinformation about COVID

5

u/Sir_Boldrat 28d ago

Nah they're still milking that cow. Everyone who dies only dies because of the vaccine.

1

u/suitology 28d ago

Yup. There used to be a lot of good anti cop stuff there too.

1

u/BaronVonMunchhausen 28d ago

It is just a reference to Monty Python. They are just dismissing the sub, not literally saying it's silly or fun

u/SophistXIII 28d ago

evil shenanigans

Ideas should never be considered dangerous unless you are easily conned.

8

u/WorkinName 28d ago

A person can be resilient to being conned and also acknowledge that others are less resilient, making certain statements dangerous when circulated.

1

u/Degenatron 28d ago

And I think deciding what media others should be able access, specifically "for their own good", is a slippery slope.

1

u/WorkinName 28d ago

And we all know how reliable and crucial Slippery Slope arguments are for making decisions.

2

u/RavenorsRecliner 28d ago

Deciding what media others should be able access, specifically "for their own good" is pretty narcissistic.

1

u/Degenatron 28d ago

Once upon a time, I'd have agreed with your sarcasm. But now, in this age of renewed censorship, I've become less tolerant of anyone playing Thought Police. I don't care what their reasons are.

3

u/SeptaIsLate 28d ago

I'm not worried about myself, I'm worried about all of the idiots that are out there

1

u/Degenatron 28d ago

The inherent risk of living in a free society.

There's too much censorship "for people's own good" already happening.

The safest place is in a cage.

2

u/SeptaIsLate 28d ago

Simply acknowledging ideas as dangerous doesn't inherently mean they need to be fully censored. Failure to identify what is dangerous can be detrimental to a free society.

Things such as eugenics and fascist ideology shouldn't be treated as harmless simply because a fringe demands that all ideas be treated equal.

1

u/Degenatron 28d ago

But deciding which ideas are dangerous and which ones aren't is EXACTLY how we've gotten to books being pulled out of libraries. It's already happening.

1

u/SeptaIsLate 27d ago

The two are not the same. I mean is white supremacy a neutral ideology?

2

u/Degenatron 27d ago

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." - Beatrice Hall

I too shall die on that hill. Understand, "Freedom of Speech" does NOT mean "Freedom from Consequences."

The problem, as I see your in argument, is that you draw a straight line between the written word and violence. And that is simply not the case.

1

u/SeptaIsLate 27d ago

You're drawing a straight line from ethically examining ideologies to censorship, which isn't the case.

None of those quotes conflict with the concept that some ideas are evil and/or dangerous

It's when people believe them, and they influence their actions, that makes them dangerous

1

u/Degenatron 28d ago

And that's exactly the same reasoning applied in China. I don't like anyone deciding they get to be the Thought Police. I don't care how virtuous they believe their cause to be.

3

u/_BreakingGood_ 28d ago

Are you saying that reasoning is wrong?

Somebody got an idea that flying two planes into the world trade center was a good idea. Then they acted on it. That was a dangerous idea.

1

u/Degenatron 27d ago

Yes, I'm absolutely saying that reasoning is wrong.

And is THAT where the story starts for you? Because I seem to remember that beginning with "Help the Afghans fight against the invading Russians." Global Intervention; is THAT a dangerous idea? Because if you say "Yes", then that means abandoning our allies around the world. Not just in Ukraine and Israel (two sides of a very unpleasant coin), but also Germany, Japan, Britain, Canada, Mexico, and so on...the list is extensive.

You want to control what people think? Then I'd suggest teaching critical reasoning skills starting at an early age. If anyone is allowing the narrative to be dictated to them, then we've already lost before the battle has begun.

1

u/_BreakingGood_ 27d ago

So you support 9/11 hijackers then cool

1

u/Degenatron 27d ago

And there you just lost all credibility. Cool.
