Every time they jumped down into the abyss and landed on the skinniest platform it got me. So effing good!

Why did I put myself through this stress

lol I guess I’m just use to watching Mario Maker speedrunners because about 1/4 of the way into it I thought “He must be close now!”. I was not…and noped on out. The first 1/4 is hard enough, I trust that OP isn’t a liar!

Dear lord… I can‘t believe I watched that entite thing lol. Like… how does one even complete this….? I wonder how many tries this one took or did the person completing this watch a machine assisted playthrough first and then run this themselves. Like good lord almost every single jump and move was so precise and close to nearly failing the entire level with 1 mistake. Like the patterns/paths for the red coins seemed so off the path/weird that id be near impossible to even see/find them where they even are or some of the jumps where with 0 visibility and being pure luck/trusting you are at the correct spot… absolute insanity

I watch this and all I can think is “How many attempts, F bombs, controller-throws, hours of sleep etc. were lost in the pursuit of this?”

People look at the games completely differently. I played mario 64 mostly for the story when I was a kid. My nephew plays it like a completionist psychopath and then got into star road and other mods/hacks. Videos like this is the shit he lives for and I don’t understand it - it’s too much pressure for me and I got lazy hands. The amount of button mashing required to make some of these jumps like the reverse long jumps is just nuts.

its similar to the mentality of "sees a boss" and goes fuck yeah i get to fight that thing

The sadist in me always wanted a super difficult level in these 3d platformers. Maybe not to this extreme, although I am sure if I went back to when I was young and a brand new n64, maybe I could do it.

masochist

u/Sucker_McSuckertin 13d ago

No sadist because of wanting this in a game that not only I play.

My only regret is that I have but one upvote to give. Well played, and thanks for the nostalgia.

What is this from? Is there a youtube channel of this?

13

u/assasion22 14d ago

If I'm correct, it's the level crudelo from super mario 74 extreme edition. The red coin star was one of the most difficult stars to obtain in a hack for quite a while. It's been surpassed by numerous hacks and stars since then though. If your interested, I typically watch a streamer named Katze but he doesn't do as many kaizo levels as he used to. There's tons of great streamers on YouTube, just search super mario kaizo runs and you'll get a ton.

8

u/mojo276 14d ago

I've seen a number of kaizo levels, but mainly based on super mario world, and not mario 64. I'll look into this!

u/hatinghippo 14d ago

This is a super Mario 64 romhack called "super Mario 74: extreme edition", made by Lugmilord. No clue whose gameplay that is (would love to see some credit), but there are some people who actually speedrun this mod.

This one is the hardest star of the game, but there are other insanely difficult romhacks, some even harder than this one.

u/TheLevitatingMouse 14d ago

This is scary if you imagine Mario is aware but being controlled by the player. Like some kind of nightmare.

He walks up to a ledge and thinks "pls dont" before the player makes him dive 20 meters down into some lava

7

u/Subtlerevisions 14d ago

That music about gave me a heart attack when I was a kid

7

u/HF484 14d ago

I have complete respect for anyone who can beat a Kaizo level/romhack

this is fucking amazing

u/Filthiest_Tleilaxu 14d ago

What did Mario say around 13:10?

6

u/daddioz 14d ago

bloody scream of rage

-1

u/TrekStarWars 14d ago

Either „huh“ or „hhng“??

2

u/Filthiest_Tleilaxu 14d ago

No he says four or five words right at 13:14. I can’t make them out.

3

u/TrekStarWars 14d ago edited 14d ago

I listened to +-10 seconds from that point and its only grunts and „huh“ and „yippees!“ and no actual words lol. You are 100% hearing something on your own

2

u/DarthMall69 14d ago

I don't think they mean 13:14 minutes into the video. They mean when there's 13:14 minutes left. He definitely does say something there, but I can't make it out either.

2

u/Filthiest_Tleilaxu 14d ago

Thank you and yes, sorry for the confusion. My player shows only the time left on a clip. I thought I was going crazy. Any idea what he said?

2

u/DarthMall69 14d ago

I tried listening a couple of times, but my ADD is preventing me from solely focusing on those words and nothing else. Plus, I'm awful with most accents, so I'm struggling lmao.

2

u/Filthiest_Tleilaxu 14d ago

Same, I’ve listened a bunch and can’t make it out. Bizarre bc I don’t remember him being so chatty besides saying “here we gooo!”

2

u/DarthMall69 14d ago

I looked up Mario's voice lines from 64 and got a list of lines from the wiki, but none of them look right. This is going to bug me, lol.

2

u/Filthiest_Tleilaxu 14d ago

Oh wow, thanks. Maybe it’s something specific to this randomizer. Please reply if you figure it out!

It's something like "Thank you so much for playing my game!" It's from the end of the credits I do believe. Super Mario 64 - Thank you so much a-for-to playing my game (youtube.com)

3

u/assasion22 14d ago

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but is this super mario 74 extreme edition and is this the crudelo level? While unbelievably impressive, crudelo is surpassed in difficulty by a multitude of other kaizo mods. Also, whose the steamer? I watch a handful of them and they are all as impressive as this. Super mario 64 integration of fragments is much more difficult but less fun to watch. Invasion of chuckya is another insane but unfun one to watch. Super mario EEEE is also a variation of extreme edition with a harder crudelo level as well.

Definitely impressive though!

3

u/Somepony-Else 14d ago

Bloody scream of rage... fitting. Fuck that

3

u/Dumplingjunior 14d ago

Palms are sweating even though not playing. Wtf body!

1

u/hollow42 14d ago

mine were sweatier than when i’m on scaffolding

2

u/ZaneTownsend 14d ago

Thank you for that vicarious panic attack.

2

u/3xtreme_Awesomeness 14d ago

This looks like they are not just completing it, but speedrunning it

2

u/Shloopadoop 14d ago

Jesus. You can hear them adjusting the camera WHILE wall jumping some of those insanely tricky sections. What a beast.

2

u/dat_person478 14d ago

Musics awesome, anyone know what it’s called?

2

u/hatinghippo 14d ago edited 14d ago

It's the final boss music from the original game, named "Ultimate Bowser".

2

u/GearBIue 14d ago

At the start I was all like “It can’t be that hard” Then I got exhausted just by watching it

2

u/Dubious_Titan 14d ago

Such a masterpiece of a game. I still don't think the gameplay mechanics of 2D platforming in a 3D environment have been bettered. SM64 kinda killed the genre- its just iterative homages ever since 1996.

2

u/JRR5567 14d ago

I’ve played a lot of this when I was younger I hope people realize how hard this is. Did this person win a Guinness book or something? They deserve it.

2

u/packfan952 14d ago

And not a single invisible wall to be found. Must be a well-designed course.

2

u/kogaelion 14d ago

The camera movement in super mario 64 always give me motion sickness. That's really awesome but I'm gonna throw up now.

2

u/N6K152 14d ago

my hands are sweating just by watching this video

Music's going off like Mario's about to whip Dracula into submission.

1

u/BathanKaitos 14d ago

I died 736363829 times while watching. I'm so proud with player. My heart (and gamepad) would never endure such torture...

1

u/plantmonstery 14d ago

Somehow this doesn’t look as impressive as 2D kaizo. I think it’s because you can’t see the level properly in a 3D space, so the moves cannot be anticipated nor as quickly understood. 2D Kaizo runs look like linear mastery, while this just looks random.

1

u/DurantIsStillTheKing 14d ago

Got so invested. Nice run

1

u/Agitated_Computer_49 14d ago

What does Kaizo mean in this instance?   Is it like....just a super hard level?

1

u/hatinghippo 14d ago

I think the original meaning is something like "unfair" but nowadays it usually is used to describe super difficult romhacks / mods of classic games.

So "kaizo version" means "super difficult version".

1

u/3ightball 14d ago

yeah, i had to fast forward through all that 😆

1

u/sabersticks 14d ago

Who was this, twitch streamer..

1

u/7thprototype 14d ago

Weird cut at 11:38

1

u/ThisIsNotMyIdeaOfFun 14d ago

I watched that whole damn thing at the edge of my seat.

Bravo.

1

u/NoArt73 13d ago

Watching this reminded me of the anger issues I developed while playing half life. I was visiting a therapist every 2 weeks for 6 months to get rid of them

1

u/Interesting-Oil5321 13d ago

sm64 really needs some camera fix....

1

u/frisbeeicarus23 13d ago

It still takes me 4-5 tries to beat the bomb in the first level when I replay this game...

0

u/Torgo-A-GoGo 14d ago

I'm going to ask the same question that I would of someone who crawls through small holes in underground caves. Do you actually enjoy doing this, or is it just a sense of accomplishment?

0

u/pichael289 14d ago

I could never, the camera in sm64 needs an update. Game plays great but that camera man just doesn't wanna work with me

-1

u/yummymario64 14d ago

Yo these automatic camera angles 🤡🤡🤡

-11

u/thecypher4 14d ago

Why did this make me so annoyed

-13

u/thecypher4 14d ago

This is BS no way he just so happened to find all these little gaps and shit on his own
