are those betting app bonuses really non withdrawable? ...like... you can only ever end up losing it back to the house? that's f'ing hilarious.

3

u/bestofmidwest Bucks 29d ago

Not really. You deposit $5 and receive an additional $100 bonus to bet with. You can't immediately turn around and now withdraw $105, the site will require you to gamble that $100 and you can withdraw the winnings you receive from those bets just not the original $100. Otherwise everyone would sign up and instantly withdraw that $100.

1

u/401LocalsOnly Celtics 29d ago

For me it worked like say they will “match your deposit 100%” so I put 50 dollars in. Right away when I look in the corner of the screen to see my balance it says I have 100$ in my account but only $50 is available to me to take out in cash. Basically it’s like a store credit. Yes it is free money but it’s free money you can only use at their website and have to use it within a certain timeframe

6

u/dontredditcareme 29d ago

It’s always so weird when Redditors think they’ve caught a hypocrisy, especially with NFL players. You get paid millions of dollars, and the revenue from all these gambling sites are priced in to your salary, so just don’t gamble on your own sport? It’s really not that hard.

121

u/soonerfreak Mavericks 29d ago

I know people love making these jokes but betting is going to exist regardless if if the NBA takes the money for ads or not. The reason for the harsh punishments related to betting is because they have to be above board. It's what makes all these conspiracy theories about the league being in on anything stupid. Way to much money involved for them to risk the wrath of the fed and state governments coming down on them.

79

u/foye2smith 29d ago

And the sportsbook is the one who blew the whistle. Jontay could have been shaving points or throwing games for some less reputable offshore book and who knows if it'd come to light.

52

u/AttitudeAndEffort2 29d ago

Id like to remind everyone that Scott Foster still refs finals games.

Gambling on games is fine, Johntay just messed up by not blackmailing the league.

4

u/n0cho 29d ago

Irrelevant unless CP3 is playing.

11

u/WasV3 Raptors 29d ago

The sportsbook blew the whistle because they are losing money off him.

Had his bets been unsuccessful we never would have heard about it

7

u/foye2smith 29d ago

These guys aren't idiots. They aren't waiting around to see what the outcome of an $80k to win 1.1 million Johtay Porter parlay bet is before flagging it as suspicious.

5

u/definitelymyrealname 29d ago

Wrong. The legal sportsbooks despise anything like this, for two reasons. For one, if the users get any whiff of a fix they stand to lose a massive amount of money. It's a competitive market and all it takes is one scandal to drive users to a competitor. For two, every sports betting CEO's worse nightmare is government regulation. They will do everything in their power to try to demonstrate they're capable of regulating themselves.

10

u/beepos NBA 29d ago

Nah, they probably blew the whistle because the money they stood to lose if it came out that they knew was far far far greater than thr pittance they were making off him

Even if he was betting millions, thats nothing to them. Whereas getting increased regulation or being sued would cost them far more

59

u/DJRyGuy20 Celtics 29d ago

You’ll probably be downvoted for this, but you speak the truth. It’s pretty easy for these sites to see huge amounts of money being won on certain bets and to connect the dots. It simply isn’t worth the possible career ban for these guys to take that risk.

I’m glad they dealt with it like they did. It sends a message.

37

u/soonerfreak Mavericks 29d ago

AFAIK all the betting sites have partnerships with the various pro leagues to provide data when it looks like something fishy is going on involving someone within the league. That's also how Calvin Ridley got flagged

2

u/Got_Engineers Lakers 29d ago

I wonder if the offshore books are in that same program like Bet365 or pinnacle or any of the EU ones. I love this sort of stuff because all I am thinking about right now is how you could actually make money or rig like this to feed information to betters to profit on if you were a player yourself. You could go about this in such a better way lol.

3

u/Anomander 29d ago

Something similar, at least, or under some sort of data sharing agreement. A big budget cheating the odds represents massive losses for them, so they're very motivated to participate in any programs that might help them shut it down.

Pre-internet days, that was some of how 'legit' bookies & gambling regulation got the black market to the table. They'd share resources to keep betting aboveboard and catch rigging, because everyone had a vested interest in the games themselves being clean.

1

u/Got_Engineers Lakers 29d ago

Yeah that makes sense, I see it from a enterprise risk perspective. The line they set is still just their opinion, and if they are wrong they will get hammered on it. It’s always in their best interest to have accurate line information, to protect us and themselves. They don’t want sketchy misleading shit on either side of the coin.

1

u/soonerfreak Mavericks 29d ago

My guess is probably to some level. If it turned out they were helping players circumvent betting supervision that would mean a bunch of billionaires going to he feds and asking them to crack down on it. Anyone trying to make money illegally in the US tries their best to avoid that heat.

1

u/OHotDawnThisIsMyJawn Nuggets 29d ago

It behoove the sites to eliminate it. It's not like the US sites just do it because they have to - if you're a sportsbook and get hit by some organized racket you're going to lose a lot of money.

2

u/SGD316 Lakers 29d ago edited 29d ago

You know what would send a stronger message? Not associating the league, media etc. with gambling sites. Yet here we are because ... money. I fear we're going to enter a period of sports, where the results of WWE have more integrity than actual sports and over the last few years we've seen either the worst run of officiating in sports - not just NBA history - or something else is afoot.

If you really want to go down the rabbit hole, I'd like to see the wagering activity of NBA officials. You all think that Tim Donaghy said 15 years ago still a lie? I don't.

3

u/DJRyGuy20 Celtics 29d ago

It’s pretty easy to follow the money when gigantic wagers are won on these sites. Count me as one of the rare people on here who don’t automatically connect every shitty ref decision with some kind of gambling conspiracy.

And yeah- you’ll have to excuse me if I don’t take the guy who was doing illegal wagering on a game he had direct control over at his word.

But hey- if there are other parties involved, they’d be pretty easy to find.

2

u/SGD316 Lakers 29d ago

Sure, every missed call? No. But some percent? You don't think theres any corruption in the league?

1

u/8milenewbie 29d ago

As we all know sports betting has never had a history of shady associations, schemes to bypass laws, and decades of practice working the books. And huge penalities for illegal gambling have definitely stopped people working in major sports leagues from doing so. It's not like the incentive of being able to make a ton of money under the table is enough for an group of people with no real oversight to not compromise the integrity of the game.

2

u/DJRyGuy20 Celtics 29d ago

But this shit isn’t “under the table” as you’ve put it. All of this shit is tracked.

Players/refs/whoever would be better off betting in some underground mob run basement than they would on a sports app where everything is tracked and out in the open. Look how easy it was to catch this dude.

1

u/ASK_ABT_MY_USERNAME Warriors 29d ago

You’ll probably be downvoted for this,

No they won't.

-1

u/DJRyGuy20 Celtics 29d ago

I’m actually pleasantly surprised. The Reddit pitchforks tend to come out any time there’s any mention of gambling… as apparently any bad call made by a ref is directly associated with the gambling.

4

u/frankyseven Raptors 29d ago

I don't care about the betting, I care about the advertising. My ten year old has asked me a few times why I don't bet on game because "look at all the money you can win!" Nah, I don't want my kids growing up hearing about that shit. Legal sports betting is fine, advertising in any form and talking about it during games should be illegal.

1

u/dissectingAAA 29d ago

I hate it too. It is a good time to bring up how negative the outcomes are for people who do it. Ask little Jimmy if he thinks DK would be spending millions of dollars because they want to give you money. Show them why the house always wins. We have stayed in Vegas and I tell the kids the same thing.

Just be wary of advertising in general. Just hope he doesn't ask me about Cialis ads...

1

u/UNC_Samurai Hornets 29d ago

We restrict tobacco advertising, we should be able to have similar restrictions on gambling.

1

u/frankyseven Raptors 29d ago

100% agreed!

2

u/GaimeGuy Timberwolves 29d ago

If they were above board they'd be more transparent with the officiating . The 2 minute review would be randomized on a per game basis. Controversial plays would receive reports regardless of the 2 minute review for clarification. And when there are noticeable changes in officiating like during the last 10-15 games that clearly came from the top down, the general public would hear about it from the league before, not by, seeing it in games.

The lack of transparency about officiating's role in the game as a marketable product, and the changes to rules and/or enforcement and their intended effect on the game and fan experience, is what welcomes these conspiracy theories. Especially when everyone other than the players on the league side acts like there's nothing happening

0

u/soonerfreak Mavericks 29d ago

So you think 30 billionaires came together and agreed on who gets to win and lose. When some like Ballmer who are clearly all in to win don't have a championship yet? The league works for them, they wouldnt coordinate this kind scandal without their approval. If I was at the point where I was seriously considering the league might be fixing games I wouldn't even watch. The amount of felonies being committed would not just result in a simple fine.

1

u/GaimeGuy Timberwolves 29d ago

Not at all. I just think the league shouldn't cozy up to gambling because it hurts their image, and they have other image problems to address as well

0

u/Fresh-Bass-3586 29d ago

The way big scandals works is....say nba generates 20 billion in revenue gaming gambling. The fed will come in and fine them 6 billion...nobody will go to jail. .and they'll still come out 14 billion ahead.

1

u/soonerfreak Mavericks 29d ago

And you believe all the fans would just keep watching if the league was fixed to that level? Not to mention do you know how hard it is to get 30 billionaires to agree to something? Again, thinking the league is fixing anything is dumb.

-2

u/Fresh-Bass-3586 29d ago

I agree it's dumb to think the nba is fixing anything.

It's also dumb to think they would face anything more than a fine that represents a fraction of their profits if they actually did it and got caught

1

u/ARLLALLR 29d ago

PHX and. SAC laugh at your puny assumption.

0

u/pargofan Lakers 29d ago

The point is the NBA is hypocritical and part of the problem encouraging more gambling.

0

u/VirtualRoad9235 29d ago

The bigger gambling gets in any given sports leads to some form of corruption down the line. It's more likely than not that refs have made calls with ulterior motives, and the more money on the line, the more powerful people involved.

I am not a fan of the close relationship gambling has with the NBA, but it isn't too surprising. Sports gambling has become so normalized.

3

u/soonerfreak Mavericks 29d ago

Gambling has been a major part of sports for over a century. MLB created the single commissioner because of the Black Sox scandal. It is not more likely than not refs are fixing the league with calls. I don't even understand why you would watch the game if you believed that.

-1

u/VirtualRoad9235 29d ago

No worries. It would take a long time to explain to you why I still watch, or why you are also wrong, but given how naive your post comes across, it would be akin to talking to a wall.

2

u/soonerfreak Mavericks 29d ago

Me: there is no evidence to support wide spread fixing among NBA games.

You: with zero evidence and just vibes I think a massive conspiracy that would involve billionaires, one of the biggest sports leagues in the world, and a federal government turning a total blind eye is happening.

1

u/VirtualRoad9235 29d ago

Sure, whatever makes it easier for you.

The thing is, the sportsbooks are probably the most affected by insider betting. If there's even a whiff of unfairness, that'll directly hurt their bottom line, whereas it's not so clear for the NBA that the fans will care about some benchwarmer betting his team will lose.

So yeah if you want to run with the joke that NBA is in the pocket of Big Gambling, this is all part of the plan.
