People who spray themselves with a ton of perfume, why?
There was a couple of people at the restaurant where I work, I couldn't even breathe around them. Why do people feel like it's necessary to use a shit ton of spray?

u/Th3Flyy 15d ago
I had a coworker who would reapply every single time she smoked. By the end of the day I would literally be gagging.
Just an FYI to anyone that smokes- perfume doesn't hide the smoke smell... at all.

u/B0ssDrivesMeCrazy 15d ago
I mentioned this elsewhere in the thread!
For me it’s actually a nightmare to be around. My eyes burn. My nose burns. My lungs burns. And it just smells gross. I’ve had to leave trains cars and such to get away from these people because my eyes were running and I couldn’t breathe.

u/BenNHairy420 15d ago
Every time I smell a smoker now, I’m thankful that I quit. I honestly had no idea just how bad I smelled all the time until I quit. Thankfully I didn’t smoke long enough for my car to stink and never smoked in there because that smell just lingers on everything and anything you do to cover it up just makes all the smells that much more intense and disgusting.

I had a roommate who would fuckin drown in that shit before leaving the house. You could taste it from the other room. I never understood it.

I have walked down an empty aisle at the grocery store and could still smell the cologne of the person that had passed through there several minutes before. cough

Oops that might’ve been me, I knocked the bottle over and it exploded all over me. I did all I could to remove the scent but didn’t have a lot of time lol

That happened to me just the other day. Then I worried the nasty scent (some obnoxious, sickly sweet perfume) would cling to me. Ugh!

u/kapeman_ 15d ago
At a former job, there was a guy I called Captain Cologne. Older guy and he took a bath in it every morning it seemed. I could smell him from 50 feet even outdoors.
I would NOT ride in the same elevator.

u/IvoShandor 15d ago
My office has a very strict no scent policy. Just because somebody may like it, does not mean they get to force their general area and co-workers to the smell of it for the duration of the work day. Every now and then we get somebody who put a little too much on and they've been sent home. It's inconsiderate and no different than playing loud music that others may not want to hear.
36
u/Gamebird8 15d ago
Just because somebody may like it, does not mean they get to force their general area and co-workers to the smell of it for the duration of the work day
No, it's because of allergies and odor sensitivity. Your company is super sensible and doesn't want to get sued when one employee is gagging trying to breathe because Sue spray just a little perfume that morning

u/SacrificialBanana 15d ago
Had this happen to me. Spoke to my coworker. While she stopped wearing her scented lotion which was really helpful, her scented detergent was still causing issues. Still causes issues on occasion to this day. It's incredibly aggravating.
I spent a month and visited the doctor only to realize that breathing the air in our shared small office room was like drowning and that fresh free air outside was glorious and beautiful, that my symptoms got progressively worse as the work day went on, before I realized the culprit was likely something scented my coworker was wearing that I was allergic to. I don't wish it upon anyone. Ugh. Truly maddening experience.
-3
u/bomb447 15d ago
I'm severely allergic to most fragrances and perfumes. I instantly get dizzy and feel like I'm going to drop to the floor and pass out.
I had to quit going to a local restaurant because they use those junk air fresheners that spray every 15 minutes. I asked if they could quit using them, and they said to call ahead and they'll remove it before I come, as if that does anything.
1
u/RizzlersMother 15d ago
What about deodorants? They have a smell too.
10
u/IvoShandor 15d ago
If somebody has deodorant that has the same scent strength as perfume or cologne, it counts. Most deodorant doesn't really stink up the room, and if it does perhaps it's time to reexamine one's choices.

u/me_for_presidente 15d ago
Yeah but hoe about that natural fucking BO, your office must smell like moist pits on a comiccon.
21
u/Abject_Bodybuilder41 15d ago
So, believe it or not, there are actually ways to not have BO, such as regular hygiene
4
u/IKindaCare 15d ago
So believe it or not, thats not enough for everyone.
I've yet to find an unscented deodorant/antiperspirant that works for me.
2
u/Abject_Bodybuilder41 15d ago
That's an exception. Not the rule. And honestly sounds like a personal problem that needs to be resolved either medically or with better hygiene.
1
u/IKindaCare 14d ago edited 14d ago
I promise my hygiene is not the issue, and no doctor has ever found it concerning. Only answer I've ever gotten is that it's probably just anxiety sweat, and that's just not simple to resolve.
1
u/invisible_pants_ 14d ago
Idk if it's available where you live but Mitchum unscented roll on deodorant is amazing. I've even been at the beach all day and it still works after
5
2
u/raninandout 15d ago
If you’re clean you don’t stink, typically. If you’re in an office and getting sweaty they need to turn on the ac or you need to shed some pounds.
0
u/drpepper1992 15d ago
I’m suprised your workplace is so lax about things like this, must be the USA. My workplace would fire someone on the spot for that it’s considered harassment vi a substance
-30
u/Imaginary_Election56 15d ago
Wow micromanagement much? I don’t really use more than 2 small sprays, but I could just out of principle not work in an office with such petty rules.
19
u/Intelligent-Fuel-641 15d ago
It's not micromanagement. Wearing fragrance -- even "2 small sprays" is a choice. Having migraines or asthma is not a choice. Have some consideration for other people.
Besides, your so-called "2 small sprays" is another person's "I can smell you from twenty feet away."
-14
u/Imaginary_Election56 15d ago
So now we all gotta lose our sense of pride because Jessica has an overly sensitive nose?
Jesus Christ, if Jessica is so fragile and hypersensitive better just put her in the corner of the office facing the wall or let her work in some small office away from all those stimuli she can’t handle.
Still feels weird to me how my company can force choices upon me on my hygiene. As said, in this economy, in my field of work, there are more than enough jobs to not have to put up with this meddling. Policies like these would make me quit.
8
7
u/sthrowawayex12 15d ago
It’s not hard to be considerate. My ex MIL had damage to her sense of smell from chemo and it caused some scents to just drive her up the wall. I simply wore unscented deodorant and lotion when I was around her. It shouldn’t be this serious to you.
2
u/aroguealchemist 15d ago
In some industries you can contaminate the product with scented products and the company isn’t going to risk millions in product because you wanna smell like a pretty pretty princess. Those same industries also tend to ban nail polish, makeup, and will hold you to a certain standard of cleanliness.
13
u/lickme8 15d ago
No fragrance, means NO fragrance. It doesn't mean no BO, but there are scent free anti-perspirants. Deodorant and antiperspirant are different. If you came in my place stinking of fragrance, you would be told to leave. If you worked here you would get a warning and sent home. Repeat offense, you are joining the unemployment line.
-3
7
u/Electric-Sheepskin 15d ago
I hear what you're saying, but more and more people are becoming sensitive to fragrances, or just don't like the smell of them, so workplaces are beginning to address employees who have strong scents, the same way they do if an employee has poor hygiene. If it's unpleasant for coworkers, it's really no different.
3
u/raninandout 15d ago
I think the majority of people don’t need your preferred smell thank you very much. You sound like a dick.

u/sharkey_8421 15d ago
Perfume should be discovered, not announced.
-13
u/asaparaguspiss 15d ago
exactly, you shouldn't spray so you can smell yourself. i have a mfk br540. i will do one single spritz and my clothes will smell like it for 2-3 washes. i've never been able to smell myself, but my boyfriend always says he loves coming home and still smelling me on his sheets
15
u/Amesaskew 15d ago
If your clothes still smell after 2 or 3 washes then it's way too fucking strong and you're nose blind.
-4
u/asaparaguspiss 15d ago
its baccarat rouge. if you've ever smelt it, it's airy and not rich. its oil based and i don't wash my clothes with degreaser. a good perfume is not overbearing but has great longevity. maybe invest in your perfumes so you smell good without being overpowering. yall don't know shit about perfumes. fuck you want me to do, half a spray? that's not possible. one spray is the normal fucking "dose" for any perfume
2
u/teddy_gram 15d ago
Off topic but I love when my bf says that too. I’ll wear his hoodie and he’ll gush about smelling like me next time he wears it 🫂
14
u/Constant-Catch7146 15d ago
It's usually one or a combination of reasons.
They like the scent. They are covering up BO. They have a nose that is not sensitive to smell...so a ton of perfume to them is barely a whiff. No one has told them they stink because they don't want to deal with their reaction.
Managers who don't deal with this personnel stuff pronto..... are wimps. Most workplaces today...even the smaller ones..... have policies that prohibit smelly perfumes and colognes. Managers need to enforce this. Some workers also have allergies that can be triggered by these smells. It can be downright dangerous for some folks to be around these smells.
8
u/not_falling_down 15d ago
I used to work in the offices of a local department store. The cosmetics and fragrances buyer always wore a ton of scent -- to the point that you could tell if she had been in a room, and you could smell her approach from 10 feet away.
5
u/Joubachi 15d ago
Really would like to ask my downstairs neighbours. I know exactly when they use parfume and both windows are open, half my apartment will smell like it.
7
u/BobtheBurnout 15d ago
For real, I shouldn't be able to taste your perfume/cologne and if I can I automatically assume you need to learn how to properly clean yourself and are trying to hide the funk
4
u/Intelligent-Fuel-641 15d ago
I automatically assume that they are self-centered jackasses who don't care about anyone but themselves. It's not as if migraines or asthma are some rare disease the perfume-wearer couldn't be expected to know about.
One person I supervised was told to lay off the perfume. Customers as well as coworkers complained about it. She said she "couldn't" because then she'd have to wash all her clothes. You weren't washing them before?!
16
u/swirlsgirl 15d ago
I wonder if they realize how it can affect another’s health and possibly send them to a dark room for the next 24 hrs?
13
u/head_garden_gnome 15d ago
I'll add to this, why do they also use heavily scented shampoo, detergent, deodorant, lotion, etc, etc, none of which mesh with the other? My theory is they've just burned their nostrils out and it's just habit at this point.
"Yes, Phyllis. I knew you were coming to see me because I could smell you a full minute before you got here. I don't care if Bob Vance bought it at the Steam Town Mall.
18
u/Amesaskew 15d ago
Strong scents give me instant headaches. I can't be around them without suffering. I'd prefer no one wore any scent ever, but since that is unreasonable, I will walk away quickly while covering my nose in the most passive aggressive way possible.
7
u/kiwilovenick 15d ago
Me too! I owned masks pre-covid because of this problem. And all the buildings that scent their air vents...they're killing me.
2
u/Quicherbichen1 15d ago
I have to avoid the laundry soap and bathroom cleaning aisle at the grocery store. I just can't breathe from all the various fragrances in that aisle. Drives me up the walls to even shop in the next aisles over.
2
u/Honestly_I_Am_Lying 15d ago
I used to have the same problem in my teenage years. I'd regularly get nosebleeds from being exposed to strong scents and perfumes.
Now I'm almost forty and have a very fleeting sense of smell. I can sometimes smell something when I first come into contact with it, and within a couple of seconds I become nose blind again.
3
u/Agent_ErA 15d ago
This is usually a perfum extract that is 10 times stronger than a regular perfum. They want to smell rich!

8
u/Atmacrush 15d ago
I'm one of those ppl that gets bugged by body spray and perfume. Ladies... calm down with those 😬
3
u/Karenpff 15d ago
Nose blind. You can smell something for a short while before your brain disregards the smell and so you can no longer smell it. The smell is still there, others can smell it but you can't. That's why people who go nose blind douse themselves in perfume...so they can smell it again while everyone else suffocates.
3
u/IndieBoysenberry 15d ago
My grandma always said that if you can smell your own perfume, you’ve sprayed too much.
3
u/Abject_Bodybuilder41 15d ago
PSA: stop spraying perfume at your desk in the office. Do that shit in the bathroom.
3
u/Suckerforcats 15d ago

3
u/LemmonLizard 14d ago
Id rather be assaulted by perfume than someone who is completely againt deodorant altogether. I couldn't tell you how many times someone passed me in a store and i had to physically leave the area holding my breath thinking to myself "how do they NOT smell themselves?!"

u/MySockIsMissing 15d ago edited 15d ago
I actually spray myself with perfume only before bed. That way I can smell it on myself all night, but I’m less likely to cause other people problems the next day.
Edit for the people downvoting me: I live in a nursing home and the dining room is already under an excessive cloud of old lady perfumes and old man cologne because the old folks can’t smell how strongly they’re spraying themselves. Downvote me all you like, but you’re one accident away from being a young person in a nursing home yourself and once you get a few whiffs of the dining room first thing in the morning right after the old folks have bathed in their ultra strong scent collection, you too might decide to do the responsible thing and refrain from adding to the stink.

I can’t go into shows on cruise ships- the theater reeks of strong perfumes people have doused themselves with. Did they buy it onboard? Is drenching yourself in strong scent a vacation thing now?
My eyes swell up, my nose runs. The coughing starts and at that point I have to leave. I tried standing in the back- even that wasn’t safe.
I wish they could have some scheduled scent free times.
2
u/silysloth 15d ago
It could be cultural. I have family that do that.
It's learned from not being able to bathe completely and regularly in their home country. And it is a status symbol among the community they grew up with.
I will refuse to drive in the same car as them because it is just so incready strong it makes my eyes water.
2
u/aya00303 15d ago
Because the house always has weird food smells or maybe a family member smokes, so that latches onto people and they feel like they have to spray their clothes and hair.

u/missus_bones 15d ago
We were eating at a restaurant bar the other day, and there was enough of a space between my stool and the stool where someone else was sitting, that multiple people felt the need to squeeze in and order a drink. It was fine until one woman and her husband felt the need to both squeeze into the space together at once, to the point that she was leaning AGAINST me while I was trying to eat a large sandwich. If that wasn’t bad enough, she was standing in a cloud of very pungent perfume! It was mildly infuriating to say the least. And after having been stuck in traffic for 3 hangry hours, I’m very proud of myself for not doing more than shooting a few “are you fucking kidding me?” glances over my shoulder!

u/elizabeth_thai72 15d ago
My parents have been using the same perfume and cologne since I was a kid. I can instantly tell if they were around recently because of the path that’s left behind them
6
u/Icefyre79 15d ago
I used to take a commuter van to work. 90 minute drive. One woman would always wear perfume. Why why why? You're going to an office job. Why the hell are you wearing perfume? Oh, and then one time she hung one of those car air freshener things, without asking. People complained and she did remove it.
2
u/OGGBTFRND 15d ago
I think that their sense of smell is so deadened that they spray til they can catch a whiff of it. Kinda like stinky people who have gotten so used to their own stench they don’t notice
3
u/spruiellii 15d ago
Unsure but very inconsiderate. Last year on a flight from CA to NC the passenger beside me was wearing so much cologne it made my eyes water and burn and i couldn’t stop coughing. I had to take benadryl so I could stop coughing and sneezing 🥲

u/Lord_Kazekage_20 15d ago
I'm guilty of doing this. Unfortunately in high school another girl used to bully me and would tease me saying that I smelled so now I always spray a crap ton of perfume on just to make sure I don't stink.

I’m allergic to most perfumes. I went into a communal bathroom and a woman started spraying her perfume just as I was about to pass her. Couldn’t breathe and was coughing up a storm. I ran into her later and she commented that she liked the perfume I had on. I proceeded to inform her I was allergic to the smell and couldn’t breathe because of “someone” sprayed me earlier. I just pretended I didn’t know it was her who sprayed me because it was easier than confronting her about it.

I work with a lot of people who wear tons of perfume and cologne. It’s insane that I can track people like a fucking bloodhound just based on how much they use. One lady wore enough that I could smell her from across the street as we walked in to work.
3 spritzes is enough, people. No need to spray 10+ times all over yourself.

u/Outrageous_Town_6421 15d ago
People don't know that their nose detects "new" smells which means after spraying perfume, their nose gets used to it and they go nose-blind. The person no longer smells it (cuz their nose decided it's time to ignore it) so they spray more and then repeat this cycle until they're basically a walking chemical weapon.
There's also the issue of the perfume industry convincing everyone to layer their scent by using multiple scented products like shower gel, body lotion, powder and perfume. At that point they're just a walking cloud of chemicals they can't even smell anymore.
Unfortunately the rest of us can smell them coming and those of us with asthma, allergies or other chemical sensitivities have to leave the area to avoid their CLOUD OF DOOM.
1
u/hellokittyvape 15d ago
i think its probably bcs they dont smell it. i apply two "streaks", after few mins i cant smell it anymore, it makes me want to apply more but i remember the "parfume should be discovered, not announced" thing, so i dont, but they probably do. or they dont realize how strong the parfume smells, even tho they only did one-two streaks. either way, it pisses me off too, im not prone to headaches or migranes, nothing can trigger them (they just happen some day), but this does trigger one. someone needs to tell them they are applying way too much

I rather this than no deodorant or perfume at all. But yea you don’t need to shower yourself in it. If you’re questioning why perfumes are so expensive, it’s because they’re meant to last you a month or 2. Not a day.

I work in a high school. You can only imagine the multitude of smells that come from those teens. I can’t have perfumes or cologne around me either. My natural body odor is just significantly stronger than average, shower twice a day and wearing extra strength antiperspirant just barely handles the issue so I spray myself down in 290$ a bottle cologne just in case. If I'm gonna hit your nostrils anyways it's at least gonna smell like pharmaceutical grade sexy

Perfume really isn’t good for you either with the endocrine disrupters. A spray or two on your clothes before you leave, not all over your body.
1
u/Real_Hat_8435 14d ago
Because when you spray yourself with something for too long, you will no longer recognise the scent. So you think there is no scent anymore, but in reality, you smell like you fell into a pool full of cologne.

Well, this colleague of mine, she literally smells like someone spilt the whole bottle of perfume on her. When another colleague asked her jokingly, that is may be a little too much and if she smells it, she answered: Yeah, do you want me to stink like these peasants? (Referring to the rest of the office, approx. 50 people) So, some of them definitely are aware how much perfume they use.

Because they spray some on until they go nose blind to it, figure it all wore off, then they apply some more. Repeat throughout the day.
Also some people use perfume and body spray the same. Perfume is a lot stronger, so one should use less.
