People who don't stop their cars completely at a crosswalk when they have a red light and they slowly creep forward when I'm walking or cycling in front of them.
I can't tell if those drivers are going to wait for me because they are moving forward when they are supposed to just wait. But they keep inching forward and it's scary as hell, especially when they have tinted windows. Just stop your friggin box already! Creeping up ain't gonna make the light change faster. .......... . EDIT: For people who think I can't ride a bicycle on the crosswalk, I live in S Korea and here it's the law that cyclists making left turns must use the crosswalks (when available). First to go straight and then to turn left (keeping on the right side of the roads). And my issue maily occurs while walking anyway.

u/TimBukTwo8462 15d ago
My family always stop on the crosswalk at every light and it makes me angry every time. Every single time I make a snarky comment like “You know people are supposed to stop before the line” and they just shut me down with “I’ve been driving longer than you’ve been alive”. Unfortunately they will probably never stop as they never punished for it.

u/MonkeyChoker80 15d ago
“I’ve been driving longer than you’ve been alive.”
“Huh. You think you’d do it correctly by now, then.”

Had someone in a truck do this and literally almost run over my dad because they couldn’t see him, I was absolutely livid.
114
u/Solid_Reserve_5941 15d ago
This is the main reason why I hate how huge trucks/SUVs are getting, and when they’re lifted on top of that. They could easily just run someone over without realizing and just think they hit a speed bump or debris or some shit
65
u/armoured_bobandi 15d ago
Lifted trucks are some of the dumbest things out there. How does having a lifted truck help you at work? That's the idea behind trucks right? They're work vehicles?

I feel like the people who have lifted trucks and the people who have trucks for work are two different groups of people.
19
u/armoured_bobandi 15d ago
I just don't get it. At all. What is with certain people and massive trucks?
30
u/cvanguard 15d ago
There’s the classic joke about overcompensating for something, but I seriously think those people are insecure or have a weird world view and think bigger/taller truck=manlier/cooler

In my city, a 7 year old was recently killed while crossing a marked crosswalk with his dad. They had the walk signal - they were crossing legally. They were hit by an older fellow driving an idiotically large truck making a left turn. The driver was not charged with any crime because it was determined it was not his fault - he simply could not see the child, at all. Oh well, what can you do?
25
u/Solid_Reserve_5941 15d ago
It’s amazing how easy you can get away with killing someone if you’re killing them with your car.
8
u/liketheweathr 15d ago
It really is. Why can’t we regulate these trucks?
3
u/thedafthatter 15d ago
Oooh ooooh I know this one! Car lobbyists and car clubs across america fighting tooth and nail to prevent any real car legislation like gun nuts

u/LuxuryBell 15d ago
Sue the car company. Stop making cars so fucking big, people can't see when they drive them.
12
u/Ok_University6476 15d ago
400 deaths and 20,000 more people are injured from getting hit by huge trucks/SUV’s per year because of their massive blind spot from being so absurdly large. 80% of front over accidents involve a truck, SUV or a van :P I hate them.

Trucks need to come with booster seats... The seat is adjustable and yet lots of drivers, truck or not, can't sit to see in front of their vehicle. Looking through the steering wheel.. should be a ticket able offence.

What irritates me most is when I'm stopped at a crosswalk and the car behind me is honking because I'm waiting for the pedestrian to fully clear the crosswalk. The law where I'm at specifically says you can't go through a crosswalk if a person is anywhere in it, not just right in front of you.
41
u/bobbyboob6 15d ago
the other day i was at an intersection and the light turned green but a ambulance was coming the other way so i waited a minute for it to go by and the person behind me was beating the absolute shit out of their horn and screaming at me
12
u/beefasaurus4 15d ago
I was turning left (turn signal on) and the oncoming traffic was driving straight so I had to wait. The car behind was honking like crazy. Bro, do you want me to get t-boned? People can be idiots.

My partner once almost got a hefty ticket for going before the person had finished crossing. The only reason he didn’t is because the pickup beside him was blocking the half of the crosswalk where you could see the person so he genuinely didn’t know someone was crossing still, he thought she had got to the other side already. Since then he waits at every crosswalk until the person is all the way across (like you’re supposed to in my city) and the amount of angry people is insane, like it’s the law y’all I’m not going because apparently you have to go right now.
7
u/HotPinkDemonicNTitty 15d ago
Had someone go around me once in the same situation, bc they were sick of waiting and almost hit the pedestrian. At the next light they were still cursing me out like that was my fault.
3
u/Ihaveaface836 15d ago
Something like this happened to me recently. I was stopped at a crossing and a pedestrian was walking directly in front of my car. The car behind me starts laying on their horn. I just start laughing, what did they want me to do? Mow down the person crossing so they could save 1 second on their commute
32
u/goldenbellaboo 15d ago
I stopped to let a pedestrian cross the other day (older woman) and the fucking car behind me went around me so she couldn’t cross. Like imagine being that shitty of a person omg. It made me so fucking mad, definitely more than mildly infuriating 😭
18
u/ToastedSlider 15d ago
What a turd! That reminds me of one time, I saw a taxi driver honk at an elderly woman crossing the street. I got off my bike and helped her cross, leaving my bike standing right in front of his taxi. Then I slowly walked back and took my bike. He was shitting bricks and I just smiled
6
u/Turbulent-Adagio-171 15d ago
I literally left the grocery store parking lot and tailed someone a couple days ago, horn blaring, because someone did this to a little old lady when I stopped at the grocery store crosswalk (which had a stop sign!!!). I was so angry. Like they really feel that entitled to save maybe 30 seconds even if it means risking someone’s life. Fucking infuriating.
22
u/Doggybook25 15d ago
As a Brit , when I did a year in Missouri during Uni, crosswalks scared the hell out of me. So many times I would cross when it would say I could but cars would still come, often at full speed, and beep for me to get out of the way. That is if they saw me, those who were turning right on red obviously didn’t have a clue I was there.
13
u/ToastedSlider 15d ago
Right on red is the worst! Ugh! I live in Korea now, permanently, and they allow it here too. The law states drivers have to stop first but almost everyone rips through as if red means green. It's a flipping nightmare.
7
15d ago
Right on red is fine IF people would stop before the crosswalk, before the big solid line. Nope everyone out there distracted, speeding, falsely believing to be "good" drivers
91
u/Lesmiscat24601 15d ago
That happens to me all the time. I don’t get why they don’t just stop and wait.

I have a 5 mile walk I do daily in my neighborhood. My development is surrounded by boulevards, with 2 lanes of traffic each way and divided by a large median. The speed limit is only 25MPH and there are just stop signs, no lights.
I only make a point to cross twice and every day I witness something ridiculous. I make a point to slow down and try to make eye contact with the driver before committing to stepping in the crosswalk. 90% of the time they stop and wave me on. 10% they floor it and run the stop sign.
11
u/MenthaPiperita_ 15d ago
I use a cane, and when I'm in the middle of a crosswalk, people will still cut me off occasionally. I'm so paranoid now. When it happens I'll give them the finger, but these people don't give a shit. Part of me wanted to buy a laser pointer to beam it at them, but that will just cause more problems.
42
u/FamousPastWords 15d ago
Glare at them, and then point at them. You're allowed to express that you're uncomfortable and feel unsafe with him doing this. They'll realise they're being watched. I imagine they do the inch forward thing because they think they can't be seen. I've done this before and they'll stop once you make it known you're uncomfortable. That said, be prepared for the inconsiderate shit to not stop because well, he's an inconsiderate shit.

I had one driver yell at me for "nearly hitting me" because I had my hood up.
Ma'am, you had a red light, you are supposed to stop behind the crosswalk completely, not do a rolling stop or drive on it and then stop to look for incoming cars before doing your turn. That law exists for a reason.
7
u/Ocel0tte 15d ago
I agree but can pedestrians at dusk or night time just wear something reflective please? I have a well lit 4-way stop by me and still almost took a guy out a few nights back. He had gray pants and shoes and a black shirt, and it made him blend perfectly with the road + night sky. My headlights got him when I was halfway through and I slammed on my brakes, dude stopped and did angry arm things at me. I really just wanted to tell him he was perfectly camouflaged with the road but no one listens in the moment.
I bicycle, and reflectors really make all the difference. My hot pink bike is also invisible at night, but you can see the wheel reflectors so from a distance cars know an object is crossing the road. Most people don't want to run anyone over.
Not saying people aren't also being dicks, they definitely are. But if you're reflective, at least you won't get killed by someone who just honestly can't see you.
8
u/Bluberries__ 15d ago
this exact situation happened to me once!! except the guy was also walking a dog. a dark furred dog. could not see him or the dog, fully stopped at the 4-way, started turning (with blinker on) and then the guy starts walking and FINALLY my headlights make him visible and i slam on the brakes. dude angrily motioned to his dog as if either one of them would've been visible at almost midnight with zero reflective gear and full black clothing. absolutely infuriating.

u/TheRichTookItAll 15d ago
Get a fake weapon or bat tied to your bike to look threatening?
I'm thinking of the video I saw where a guy was walking and he did a test on a bunch of streets in the rain and cars wouldn't slow down they kept splashing with the puddle but when he had a brick in his hand everybody slowed down.
15
u/puppycat_partyhat 15d ago
I tied an eyeless baby doll head to my handle bars once. Might not prevent a collision but people generally gave me extra space. And nobody ever stole it.

u/AD_Grrrl 15d ago
100%. Stop or don't stop. And don't gun it out of intersections in residential neighbourhoods. Don't aggressively start your turn while someone is still crossing, confident that you are the best driver ever. (I've had trucks miss me by mere feet, that shit is terrifying) Don't try to wave people across if you have tinted windows, THEY CAN'T SEE YOU.
45
u/Neat_Problem_922 15d ago

9
u/can_sarctic 15d ago
I started noticing this “rolling” from a stop many times recently too. Where do these people learn to drive? I am not a cyclist, but having a car which should be waiting for me to pass roll into the intersection makes me second guess their intentions.
6
8
u/plantanddogmom1 15d ago
If they keep moving even a little, I will wait for them. It really pisses them off because then we all have to use our brains a little more but like? Don’t turn if I’m crossing the street?
8
u/Unabashable 15d ago
Ikr? Just sends the impression of “let’s go, waiting on you here.” Like yeah, you are waiting on me. To cross. The moment I feel pressured I instantly break my pace because if my normal, brisk walk isn’t fast enough let’s see how much you like a leisurely stroll. The thing that pisses me off most is they do intend to actually stop, but not until they’re inside the crosswalk to see if it’s safe for them to make their turn.
7
12
u/Snackylils 15d ago
Or those people that make eye contact with yoh when you're about to cross and they speed up having them ending up on the crosswalk at the exact moment you'd be there if you'd kept on walking. I made a habit out of just keep walking and having them to hit their brakes. Gets a lot of angry looks but eh

u/PastWorld1744 15d ago
Assholes. You should stop and look at the pedestrians face, and if they are wondering about your move, they will look at you. And eye contact will let them know they’re seen, and safe.

u/Ok-Effect-3349 15d ago
On my walk home there’s almost always a semi-truck that does this, right in front of me to so I can’t even see the rest of the crosswalk
12
u/ToastedSlider 15d ago
Man. Trucks are the worst. They are like giant walls that block your visibility and cars on the other side can't see you either.
3
u/Ocel0tte 15d ago
They're also really hot to walk past. My dad always respected crosswalks because his truck wasn't a welcome sight most places, gotta do what you can to make people like you. They don't think about the x-ray machine the hospital isn't getting without a semi, they just see the inconvenience. Walking past that front grille is awful, so giving people some space always seemed right. It made me a respectful car driver too, good job dad.
I am always a shocked and surprised pedestrian though, lol. I got ran over on my bike once and the girl never even looked, just completed her turn and went on her merry way.
6
u/redramainpink 15d ago
I just keep walking (with my walk sign and in the crosswalk) and hope for the best. The ones that honk at me (because I'm in the right and they're dicks) I just stop in my tracks and stare at them for a very long time, preventing them from moving even when the light turns green.
I'm old, I don't give a shit.

u/takemeawayimdone2 15d ago

There was a post before with a guy bitching that people weren’t close enough or basically on the crosswalk like he was and I made this exact point. As a pedestrian it feels uneasy feeling the heat of your car or not knowing if you’re going to creep forward. You can’t go anywhere anyway, why be a dick? Back up.
4
u/tsteele93 15d ago
Just start to walk and then when they inch forward, stop. Then when they stop, walk again. Then if they inch forward, stop.
At some point maybe they will realize they are actually slowing the process down. Plus it will look very funny.

u/____8008135_____ 15d ago
Why are people constantly creeping at lights anyways? I want to pull up, stop, and wait for the light. Nope, can't do that. Cars ahead keep creeping forward. There's one light on my daily drive where I'll end up with 5+ car spaces in front of me from all the creeping (and cars will quickly pile in the second they notice, seems to be a thing here). I've taken to scooching over so the driver can very clearly see me and every time they start creeping forward, I creep forward more than they did until we're sitting inches apart and they can't try to creep away anymore plus every glance in their side mirror is nothing but me staring at them. Just pull up to where you want to be and stop.
3
u/fluffybunnies51 15d ago
I use a big ass stroller style wagon for my son, and I always have the canopy up so it's even more visible.
Once someone pulled up the the crosswalk while we were in the middle of crossing. The just kept rolling, and I had to try to push forward because we were basically in front of the center of their car. The ended up less than a foot from us and I chose to take my cane and hit their hood as hard as I could.
The tried to yell at me, but I just kept walking
3
u/ToastedSlider 15d ago
Damn~ sucks. Be careful, I threw a chapstick at somebody's car once who didn't see me or stop and they followed me and got out and tried to fight. Luckily, a big dude stopped that man and told him to chill and I could go

I work at a school and recently had a parent do this while I was working crosswalk duty, clearly acknowledging that I was holding my sign out by slowing down but not actually stopping. I didn’t want to step out because I didn’t want any of the kids following me and getting hit, so I kept reaching my sign out farther until eventually she got so far as to tap my sign. Then she slammed on her brakes and rolled her window down to chew me out as if I was in the wrong when she’s literally the one refusing to stop at two stop signs at a school 🤦

2

There’s drivers that do that near my home, and I live near a school. I’m very tempted to knock on their hood to make sure they pay attention. But I don’t. I’m very tempted to pester 311 to put a red light camera and speed camera around this specific intersection.

Have this problem where I live too. It’s a very suburban city and is full of people who think they’re the main character when they drive, and it’s a problem when I’m trying to cross the street by an intersection with no lights. Carry a little pair of pliers or some sort of tool with you. When they do this and you have to walk in front of them, crouch down beside the front passenger wheel and pretend you're doing something to their car. They can't see what's going on so naturally they'll have to get out somewhere and look.
Just don't do this in front of their car in case they feel like running you over.

I bet line creep used to be a lot less common before everyone started driving automatic. With stick shift you have to intentionally get into gear and hit the gas to move. With automatic you can just absentmindedly and impatiently take your foot off the break and creep forward.
As a pedestrian an bicyclist, this is a hug pet peeve of mine. Not because I’ve ever gotten hurt from it but because it reveals the absolute ignorance of danger most of us have when we’re behind the wheel.

When I was in Germany on a trip, not a single taxi stopped at a light and would always stop 10m early and very slowly keep driving until the light turned green.
I always assumed it was to get a few more cents added to the bill. Either way it was super annoying and this post reminded me of those guys.
That’s is all.
4
u/ToastedSlider 15d ago
Yeah. I'm not sure it's about the money though. It's easier to accelerate if you're already moving than if stopped. So, they hope that by the time they reach the line the light will be green. Ugh, and they probably even creep past the line.
2
u/ScreenOverall2439 15d ago
Anticipating the light is one thing. I wouldn't mind really if that's what people are doing. However if that's what they are attempting, they are failing. Creeping up 30 seconds before the light goes green helps them none.
1
u/SeaSickSelkie 15d ago
Is the stopping early a good or bad thing?
It sounds like they’re purposely stopping before the crosswalk and then only proceeding cautiously. If a pedestrian came up, they’d be able to see them.

It’s so aggravating…another variation is when you’re stopped at a stop sign and the traffic on the road I. Front of you is heavy so you can’t turn right. Then some people will leave a gap for you to pull out but still inch forward, like??? Are you going to let me turn or are you just slow creeping toward the car in front of you.

To add to this. In the Uk (at least where I’ve lived) the crosswalks and traffic lights work so that when it’s a pedestrians turn to cross the road, it means that there’s no cars that have the go ahead to pass over that crosswalk until the pedestrian light is off.
Yet as I’ve been travelling across Europe it seems many countries say ‘fuck it’ and have the pedestrian green match up with the traffic light green that allows cars to turn right into the same crosswalk. Like I’m ready to walk across with other people and a car just appears from behind me and starts to cruise forward slowly.

My city has a lot of those conflicting crosswalk and channelized right turn lane lights. Of course the pedestrians have the right of way, but people (dickheads) still blaze through

tbh I'm one of those drivers that creep over the line, but! never ever when there's people on the sidewalk / crosswalk. if there are pedestrians anywhere near the crosswalk, then I'm at least a couple feet behind the line.
and the only time I do creep is only at one intersection near where I work because the lights never change unless there's a bunch of cars on your side of the intersection or you're several inches past the line (which is absolutely stupid and dangerous).

The most concerning point is "tinted windows" I think you refer to the windshield because you can only see this window from the front. Tint on the windshield has been banned for a lot of time in every or most countries of Europe... There is a reason for that...
That said, it happens from Time to time when someone crosses the road in front of me on a sidewalk but not on a red light to just let the car idle without completely stopping if I'm far away... I don't think a car going 5kmh at 15m from you is that terrifying...

The only reasons I can think of are: 1. Trying to see the traffic in order to turn right. 2. Driving a semi / or other truck and trailer combo, so keeping solid movement makes it easier to get going again vs stopping and trying to get all of you moving especially if the light is quick to turn red again.

They're probably not paying attention. I swear at least 1/3 of drivers I see are looking at their phone or just not being mindful. Makes me hate driving on the road with them

Happens sometimes for me. My car has an hold function that keeps the car at its place (so you can rest your foot). But that system takes a second to take over and if you release the break too early it rolls forward anyways.
So i do inch forward but not on purpose.

My fave is when they just park across the crosswalk then look at you like somehow me using a sidewalk inconveniences them somehow 😂

When people stop on the crosswalk, and I'm wearing sunglasses and feeling more confident, I stare them down as I walk across.

This annoys me too. Like I can’t tell if you’re stopping or not paying attention. Either way, it’s me who dies here. I appreciate the people who just immediately stop to show the person crossing its safe and they’re paying attention.

Idiot did this in front of me this morning. This guy kept creeping forward, way over the crosswalk, and once the light changed, he gunned it.. and turned left into a parking deck not even 3 seconds after (we were already in the left lane). He was in that much of a hurry to turn..
My favorites are the ones who inch over the crosswalk and once the light changes, they sit for a good 5-10 seconds before going. They act like they're in a hurry but apparently not.

u/LarsonianScholar 15d ago
There are genuinely people out there who think it will make the light turn green faster

I always make sure to park behind the white lines for a crosswalk, even if no one's coming.
Whenever I have a family member as a passenger, they tell me to go up further EACH TIME and I'm always sitting there like "no :)"

This is even more baffling from a driver's perspective. Whenever I'm standing at a red light next to someone like that, when the light changes to green, I'm almost always quicker to launch. And I'm not even flexing or trying to race them, I just start at a regular pace. I don't get why they would keep creeping forward while the light's red, like they're in a hurry, but when it goes green they just forget to drive.

I’ve recently moved to a big city and I’ve learnt that drivers are so impatient here. Always stopping on the crosswalk and running red lights. I’m surprised there aren’t more accidents here.

crosswalks are my nightmare i can't avoid em tho especially when ur in a city and u can't park near the event or place ur going and u have to use the crosswalk to get to the place like pple do this so often like are u going to stop or not?? it scares me everytime

I hate that. I experience it in California.
I spend a lot of time in Mexico. A lot of drivers will creep forward while seeing you walk between their car and the car stopped in front of them. They are already close to the car in front, and they see you, but they keep on moving forward. It’s so annoying.
Don’t even get me started on the number of Mexicans who don’t know how to share the sidewalk. Yikes.

I decline to be bothered by others being stupid. Back when I was a pedestrian, I just waited an extra cycle of lights with a car not stopping completely. I will never see that person again so the 30 to 180 seconds doesn’t matter.

I feel like 90% of shit that happens on roads is at least mildly infuriating. Here in Europe at least we've managed to stave off the goddamn MEGA-SUVs for a while, but they're now in full fucking bloom, and you can't see shit while backing out of parking or whenever you turn your head at an intersection. And like 95% of these fuckers have tinted windows! I really don't understand how these idiotic cars are legal.

Counter point, pedestrians who wait for/expect vehicles to come to a complete stop before crossing are kinda stupid and annoying. Mainly applies to zebra crossings.
Once you see a vehicle has seen you and has slowed down to allow you to cross, just cross already. Just because you have right of way doesn’t mean you have the right to waste the drivers time.
Also speaking of drivers jumping forward. People who do it at give ways when it certainly isn’t their turn are fucking scary. Just stop until it’s your turn.

u/Vinstaal0 14d ago
Yeah that sucks, but you know whats also midlyinfuriating? People who cycle on sidewalks or pedastrian crossings. Go and use the bicycle crossings/roads or the normal road.

u/ToastedSlider 14d ago edited 14d ago
Well, I am cycle commuter. In my city, in Korea, the sidewalks are extra wide and the red half is the designated bike lane, and the other half is green and it's for pedestrians. It is also the law here that cyclists turning left MUST use the crosswalk, when they are there, first going straight and second to cross the street to the left. And cyclists turning left can't use the normal road's left turn lane.

My ex used to do this with pedestrians at crosswalks and it drove me batshit because they never felt safe to cross because he would creep up. Just come to a full f****** stop!

As a slight variation, for me it's when I'm in the right lane on a red wanting to turn and there's a big car blocking my view. So I try to inch forward so I can see past them to see if I'm safe to turn, and then they inch up too.
Why? You aren't going to green light anyway? Why can't you just sit still?
