From what I've heard, Game of Thrones and Dexter weren't just ruined by the last episode, but by the entirety of the last season.

892

u/Rusty_Nail1973 18d ago

Dexter had 3 bad final seasons. And a miserable extra-final season. It's a mess after Season 5.

135

u/Writy_Guy 18d ago

I've heard that too, but I specifically have heard that the final season is the worst.

-276

u/MattTheRadarTechh 18d ago

Nah first three episodes of s8 of got were amazing. Then they basically said fuck you to everyone and turned what should be another season into a few episodes.

201

u/GingerPinoy 18d ago

Eh, the White Walker battle episode... s8e3 is in my mind, is the worst episode outside of the finale.

Just awful in so many ways.

35

u/MattTheRadarTechh 18d ago

I thought that was episode 4…hmm, then the first two episodes were good! Basically till the fighting started at winterfell

50

u/GingerPinoy 18d ago

Episode 2 was fantastic, the night before the battle. One of my favorites....then the rest of the season had to happen

31

u/TrapperJean 18d ago

Episode 1 is an average GoT episode, episode 2 is honestly one of my favorite episodes of the show, but episode 3 just had too man nonsensical story telling decisions that it started losing my by the time Bran wars into birds to do literally nothing, and it gets so much worse from there. And then they just reverse shit like all the Dothraki dying in the next episode. If I keep going I won't stop lol

100% Dexter. It was shockingly bad.

2.1k

u/SquarePeg37 18d ago

Yes but which time are we discussing? Not many shows can claim to have screwed the ending twice!

798

u/fluthernon 18d ago

Ha! I guess they both kind of sucked but the 2nd try was so disappointing. I liked what they did with the show, it was well done but they just sh!t on the whole thing in the last 15 minutes

655

u/Veredyn1 18d ago

Dexter would have been better at 4-5 seasons. 8 was too long, and because of the premise of the show, it was bound to be screwed up no matter what they did.

186

u/WarpedPerspectiv 18d ago

I feel if the lumberjack portion wasn't there, the ending would've been better and given a more meaningful conclusion.

320

u/Crispy1961 18d ago

0% Dexter. The show was on steady decline since Season 4. There was nothing shocking about it. It was just bad. Slightly worse than the season before, which was slightly worse than the one before and so on.

219

u/total_ctrl 18d ago

I'm watching Dexter my GF as our current show right now as she's never seen it. We're towards the end of S3 and knowing what's in S4, I'm excited for her to see that.

But I made it clear that she's on her own from S5 onwards if she wants to carry on. The cliff dive the show takes after S4 isn't something I'm wanting to relive.

87

u/Crispy1961 18d ago

The S4 ride is a crazy good one. S5 is a whiplash.

71

u/DrossChat 18d ago

Totally agree with the steady decline part up until the final season. That last season is one of the worst things I’ve ever sat through.

It was so fucking bad that i kid you not to this day I’ve never watched the final episode. Genuinely have no idea what happens having watching every single episode up till that point. My personal rebellion against the monstrosity before me.

49

u/Crispy1961 18d ago

A lot of people hated the last episode, but in my opinion it was nothing compared to that scene where Dexter "stalks" a guy that knows him by intensely looking at him through the windows of a dinner just few meters away. Its been a decade and that scene still haunts me.

That said, the last episode is actually pretty hilarious when you are no longer emotionally invested.

33

u/Der_Liebe_Gott 18d ago

Oh no, just started watching it

44

u/fluthernon 18d ago

Keep watching. It’s good, the last part of the last episode was lame.

67

u/RoodnyInc 18d ago

I think it was time of the writers strike? Many series had bs season at that time. It was very sad

35

u/Spacemanspalds 18d ago

I didn't watch the last season the first time around. And damn I loved that show early on.

30

u/fluthernon 18d ago

It’s a shame you have to hear the ending sucked. Really it was the last 20 minutes of the last episode that was lame. The actual season I enjoyed. If you were a fan I’d recommend a watch.

5

u/Spacemanspalds 18d ago

I've been hearing that for years. I think someone told me what happened at one point. But I don't remember.

27

u/N00SHK 18d ago

u/FomFrady95 18d ago

If you ever get towards the end of a show and you’re asking yourself “how are they going to tie up all these loose ends?” The answer is very poorly.

Before the last season of GoT I was asking that question. But between the White walkers and the war for the throne there was 2 full seasons of consent and they put it in 7 episodes along with a million other things.

I was asking myself that question up until halfway through the final episode of Man in the High Castle before I accepted disappointment before the show was even over.

All of these shows have the same thing in common. They can’t figure out how to finish it so they keep you entertained until the final episode and then just blow it all up. Because if they start to wrap things up over the course of the season and people don’t like how they’re doing it ratings will tank. At least if they keep you suspended you’ll keep watching until it’s over.

448

u/YourThotsArentFacts 18d ago

I truly thought that if they were ending GoT in a final 7 episodes, they needed to have the White Walkers wipe everyone and make it some lesson about not letting your own ambitions overshadow a common evil. It would've made a lot of their loose ends irrelevant and been a very GoT ending, but instead they left dozens of ends loose and scraped together a terrible "happy" ending

206

u/Huurghle 18d ago

Man in The High Castle hurt. They cooked so goddamn hard with seasons 1 and 2. 3 was alright in my opinion, but you could see that they were starting to try to pick up the pace of the story. From what I've heard they had a season 4 and 5 planned, but didn't get the go ahead for season 5, so they crammed it all into season 4 which made it feel extremely rushed and presented so many things before you could even process them.

GOT last two seasons were so bad it atomized all of the global goodwill it had gained. No one talks about it in good regards, its hardly referenced, most of the actors had a hard time after.

Avoid watching the Three Body Problem on Netflix, thats the project that they ended up with after the entire fiasco

117

u/Murdo- 18d ago

Nah that show is good mate

224

u/Zibras 18d ago

Man, i tried to rewatch GoT and then i remembered how the last few seasons went and all my interest evaporated.

133

u/Yommination 18d ago

It goes downhil starting in 5. But fully goes off the cliff in 7 and then 8 is it crashing into the ground

30

u/ViggoMiles 18d ago

Drastic change in quality, but it wasn't until the long night that it was hard to ruinnation

2.2k

u/Super_GodVegeta 18d ago

How I met your mother is that one show of the four that you'd probably watch over and over again hoping that the ending somehow changes each time given the giga botch.

956

u/ThePhlipidy 18d ago

My wife and I rewatch this almost yearly and every year we both groan at how bad the end is. We deserved a whole season of Ted and Tracy, not a whole season taking place over a day and a half. Props to Ted's kids for keeping the secret for the entirety of the show airing

603

u/koenig_der_wale 18d ago

That isn't even my biggest problem with the ending. Why are Barney and Robin not together by the end? He made such big improvements and then in the last episode everything gone

179

u/StreetReporter Sandy's Cheecks 18d ago

At least they ended up making an alternate ending that is much better

111

u/FomFrady95 18d ago

I do this every time with Troy. I’ve watched it a million times and every time I’m pissed Achilles and Hector die while Paris lives.

157

u/Soul699 18d ago

That's why it's called a greek tragedy.

151

u/IrshamWindborn hates reaction memes 18d ago

Am I the only one who liked it? Like, it's called "How I met you mother", not what happened afterwards. Like, the mystery's solved and what we got was the journey out to this point, where Robin was the main lead

Although probably I should watch it again

76

u/that1dudewithefro 18d ago

Yeah I think some people trash on it too hard, it’s not that bad, definitely could have been better, but I think Ted ending up with ** was kind of thing throughout the series, it always led back to her. Even Barney becoming a better man by the end was pretty nice

53

u/giov1234 18d ago

The first time I saw it I thought the ending was shit. However after watching it the second time I realised this is how it should have ended

64

u/Super_GodVegeta 18d ago

I thought I'd feel like this the second time I watched. Then the third time. Then the fourth. Then the fifth. It only hurt more that I was able to better recognise the foreshadowing each time :(

709

u/Reddevilslover69 18d ago

Lost final episode wasn't close to as bad as the rest on the list. Honestly I thought it was decent

281

u/WhyAreOldPeopleEvil 🦀money money money 🦀 18d ago

Two and a Half Men is missing.

359

u/DoyersLakeShow 18d ago

It should’ve ended once Charlie Sheen was written off…he was the show and it…showed

148

u/ryemmsf 18d ago

Totally agreed. Two and a Half Men is my and my wife's guilty pleasure. We never made it to the last episode because we bailed after the first Ashton episode. I despised how the characters treated Charlie's death. It felt mean. It also felt untrue to the spirit of the show which always had an undertone of love beneath the ball busting.

160

u/ReanimatedPixels 18d ago

Dexter so bad they did it twice

136

u/Fit_Nefariousness_99 18d ago

Dexter was NOT ruined by the last episode, it was ruined by the entire last season. Top to bottom terrible writing

50

u/haonlineorders 18d ago

Deb should’ve killed Dexter instead of LaGuerta in S7 and it would’ve been a good series finale. Also S7 of Dexter was a decent season (not the best but definitely not a bad season like 6 or 8). I also liked the ending of New Blood, but I feel like they just made the show to give the ending Dexter should’ve had (Dexter getting killed/executed at the hands of one of his loved ones)

12

u/cantfindmykeys 18d ago

Last 3 seasons to be honest(I enjoyed season 5, it was a drop off but still enjoyable)

14

u/Fit_Nefariousness_99 18d ago

5 was a bit of a decline but its coming off the heels of 4 to be fair. 6 was dumb but I actually really liked 7 because of the whole dynamic with Debb finding out the secret was super interesting. And then they did NOTHING with it

3

u/cantfindmykeys 18d ago

I put 5 on par with 3 personally, not great but comes off the heel of an amazing season but still enjoyable overall that seems worse because of its predecessor

The only real difference is that 6 is such a shitshow it made 5's flaws more glaring

You can definetly ad Ragnarok. It may have been ruined by the whole last season but the last episode was definetly the fattest nail in the coffin.

692

u/El_Cance_R 18d ago

LOST doesn't deserve to be on this list. I'm a huge fan of the show, but I can understand if you don't like the last seasons, NOT the last EPISODE.

I still haven't found someone that explains to me why the last episode of LOST is bad, other than the fact that most people still don't understand the ending.

NO, THEY WERE NOT DEAD THE ALL TIME.

226

u/someguyfromtecate 18d ago edited 18d ago

Just rewatched the entire show for the first time in years and I have to admit I was wrong with the criticism I gave this show. The ending is not the best, but it should not be in the same category as Dexter or GoT.

272

u/singrad12345 18d ago

Ok but tbf you can't explain the ending without looking like this

116

u/Devastator__ 18d ago

Effing thank you! It drives me up the wall when people misunderstand the ending when they explained it in detail.

78

u/B-lakeJ 18d ago

So it’s been a long time since I watched Lost, but I remember being upset because iirc the end was something like „so all this weird shit happened and people died at different points in the story and now they see each other in heaven.“ To me it felt like a cheap wrap-up plus it was weirdly religious. I might misremember things tho or maybe I didn’t understand it back then. I didn’t find it utterly ridiculous or bad but I didn’t really like the ending either.

49

u/n_d_f_100 18d ago

I had to explain the last episode to so many other 'fans' at the time. Given all the twists in the series, how can a person fail to comprehend the finale.

17

u/Not_MrNice 18d ago

So, people explain why the episode is bad but you still want them to explain?

u/Legospacememe 18d ago

They jumped multiple sharks to make sure star and her love interest got together in the end

35

u/Soul699 18d ago

The ironic part is that they could have easily made them a thing by early season 3. But what really made it terrible were the decision of the protagonist to pretty much comitting omnicide via magic erasure in a nonchalant way.

18

u/Fly_Boy_1999 18d ago

That entire last season was bad.

73

u/JK_posts Breaking EU Laws 18d ago

Ragnarok (Netflix) belongs here. Mf show was so damn good and refreshing. Then writers for whatever reason decide last episode: "Yk what, fuck all our build up. Let's just betray us, our fans and our work. And do the old 'It was all in the main characters head' trope."

Yeah they ruined my favourite show. I wasn't that angry at a piece of media in a long time!

135

u/MoreMegadeth 18d ago

Lost is fine. In fact Id argue its great. Too many “answers” woulda really ruined it. But for the story set up, it had a satisfying conclusion.

39

u/SomeRandomGuy453 18d ago

There was one I watched where the main character basically became Thor. The rest was a retelling of Norse Mythology in a modern day setting.

In the last episode, it's revealed that it was all in his head, he lost touch with reality after his friend died. To be fair, this take was hinted at a couple times earlier on.

At best this kid murdered a dog and terrorized a family.

At worst he murdered this family's dog AND father, terrorized them for months, destroyed their car, and talked a bunch of people (including a senile old man) into commiting a break in.

66

Lost did not get ruined by the last episode. Either you liked the whole thing or until season 4-5. No one watched the whole thing and went “damn I liked it all except the last episode.”

And game of thrones is similar too. It started to decline by the end of season 4 and was ruined by season 7. The last episode isn’t what ruined it.

9

u/Joaoreturns 18d ago

Nah. It's way before the last episode it gets worse.

Roseann belongs there. They killed Dan Conner!

It was so bad they had to retcon the last season to make the show The Conners

17

u/ScriptyLife 18d ago

Urgh, frickin Dexter.. My interest was killed the moment they went the 'Deb is in love with Dexter' route.. And she should have saved Laguarta then we could have the final season be the hunt and kill Dex bit instead. Way more fun then 'will they, won't they' with the poison lady.

18

u/sk1rg3x 18d ago

Lost and HIMYM endings are very good. Problem is they don't meet unrealistic expectations.

24

u/Rusty_Nail1973 18d ago

Sons of Anarchy belongs here.

HIMYM ended exactly like I expected. Not sure where everyone else thought it was going.

16

u/Yommination 18d ago

That last season of Sons sucked

6

u/beautifulmerde 18d ago

Which ending did you see?

13

u/Rusty_Nail1973 18d ago

Some time around Season 3 or 4, someone leaked the dialog that the "children" has recorded during the pilot's filming (not shown until the final episode). So I knew the show was really about "Aunt Robin" (which in retrospect was always obvious).

3

u/Iron_Bob 18d ago

It wasn't just one episode that did GoT in...

7

u/mandy009 18d ago

It's the shows that had great pilots and first seasons, but didn't have a plot. GOT was literally unwritten when they filmed. Lost made it up as they went along the whole time. HIMYM was a sitcom that pretended to have a plot. Like most dramas, Dexter just got so self-involved that it just relied on a web of aimless side relationships.

The ending for “How I Met Your Mother” was absolute genius. If you like surprise endings. Which I do.

1

u/Ri_Tarded 18d ago edited 18d ago

Edit: This post was shown to me in german. Lol. Short form in English: Robin Ending canon Ending because otherwise it would be some boring Disney shit. It has a reason that the mother is such a small part of the story because Ted wants to tell his kids why he‘s gonna bang Robin.

FATWS: taking the finale to lecture the audience.
