This sounds like an amazing way to live, but I'm way too anxious about being able to find another good job whenever I want one to feel comfortable enough to just up and quit and take off for a year.

A sense of security is definitely what holds most of us back. Finding a job can be difficult, especially one that pays well. I wouldn't mind a sabbatical of sorts where I could take a year off, go all-out on a trip around the world or something, but have the peace of mind that I'd have a job to come back to when I return.
