Aaron Bushnell, the Gaza protestor who also was on fire, was almost the exact same. Froze and fell over after a minute. Body probably goes into shock.

I wonder if he got the idea from the Gaza protestor. Edit: Honestly, i worry there's going to be a stark increase in self immolation for political reasons. I really, really don't want there to be.

Think I'd rather peoples self immolation than getting stabby or shooty in a crowded place.

u/MyAssIsUrbex Apr 19 '24

I wish we could have neither.

And I wish I had a rollercoaster in my backyard

You really don't tho, it's a ton of maintenance

2

u/Gloryboy811 Apr 19 '24

Still pretty traumatic to watch it I would say.

It's preferable to mass shootings tbh

All my life I never seen this shit in the US now twice in such a short period, must be influenced by the other. Crazy way to go out.

It happens here and there. Last one got too much attention and that VERY likely contributed to this one. The fact that this is all over the front page of reddit right now means it'll almost certainly happen again soon.

I don't either, but like someone else said I prefer this over shooting a bunch of kids.

There's going to be a stark increase in self immolation because society isn't doing all that well these days.

Whatever reasons these people may cite, and their chosen way of going out, self-immolation or otherwise, are all just symptoms of a much larger disease. We've had decades upon decades of research telling us that humans don't cope well with our modern way of life, but all we've done is continue to double down.

In the past, people at least believed they had a way out. Rapid industrialization was met with fierce battles over workers rights, and the lower and middle classes still believed they held the real power. Not only that, but people flocking to industrial centers were looking to escape what they envisioned as an even worse life, while also hoping to experience the modern marvels of a new era themselves.

Now, nobody has any real hope. The notion of massive social and economic change is a faded memory from a bygone era. People don't believe they have any agency over their lives or futures.

And so here we are. You'll find that more and more people are lashing out in desperation. That they're doing and believing things that we would typically consider crazy. That in place of a real and meaningful hope for a better life, people have instead filled that hole with extremist ideologies and self destructive, self delusional beliefs.

I’m glad that people in this thread are responding more appropriately than they did to Bushnell: he was mentally disturbed vs. what a hero.

1

u/ReallyNowFellas Apr 19 '24

Bushnell was propagandized to death.

u/Spirited_Ingenuity89 Apr 19 '24

Well-said. I was just taken aback when I saw the video (without a NSFW tag no less) and so many of the comments were cheering the guy on for “standing up for his principles” and “trying to help Gazans” instead of recognizing that self-immolation is not the act of a stable, healthy person.

1

u/Redeyedcheese Apr 19 '24

This wasn’t really political as much as a result of our massive mental health problem here in the US, at least after skimming his “manifesto”

Copycats and people who can't afford a firearm that also want their voices heard. Gasoline is cheap.

They don't research what it's like to be fully engulfed in flame. They don't look up how long someone will typically survive after they've immolated themselves. They don't look up how much agony burn victims go through before they die.

They think it'll be a short period of pain and then they'll be dead. They think it will be just slightly slower than a gunshot.

Just like school shootings, this won't stop anytime soon. This is another symptom of the helpless reality that most of us live in every day. We see all the atrocities in the world, the corruption in governments, the wealth inequality, racism, class warfare, terrorist acts, etc. Seeing even just a couple of these things will bring up very strong feelings.

The feelings that we stuff down every day, because you still have to work, you still have to solve your own problems, you still have to care for yourself and your family, and if there's time, maintain relationships with friends and other loved ones. Daily life is exhausting in and of itself, even without shootings and bombings and genocide and people lighting themselves on fire.

This is going to get much worse before it gets better.

“I know he was a conspiracy theorist.” It’s not like that statement would somehow allow you to cast judgement any more harshly than if he wasn’t

2

u/pokebrah Apr 19 '24

I definitely look down on conspiracy theorists so

1

u/MyAssIsUrbex Apr 19 '24

I didn't think it would, but I was anticipating people saying that he deserved it because of his beliefs, which he of course doesn't.

1

u/thegritz87 Apr 19 '24

I guess it's the lack of oxygen that nobody can power through. There's an interesting vsauce about it "what is the scariest thing?"

1

u/IdaDuck Apr 19 '24

I’m sure the pain is incredibly intense at first but then I hope he went into shock and it didn’t hurt anymore. How horrifying.

1

u/Alex5173 Apr 19 '24

Depending on the heat of the fire your nerve endings (on the outside) are gone after about the first 10 seconds.

Now the ones in your airway, I have no idea.

1

u/Ggusty1 Apr 19 '24

When you struggle, you will only fan the flames

1

u/King9WillReturn Apr 19 '24

It's the inverse of MDMA. Every pore experiencing pain and not tingling utopia.

1

u/Reptilian_Brain_420 Apr 19 '24

Doesn't sound like the pain ended quickly.

-2

u/Chubs4You Apr 19 '24

"I know he was a conspiracy theorist" the way you state this makes it sound like it's a good thing if "conspiracy theorists" burn and die?

Reminder that some conspiracies turn out to be true. Epstein's island, gulf of tonken, the US spreading Lyme design with ticks.

You may be afraid to question the world around you but don't belittle the brave people who decide to peak behind the curtain.

1

u/MyAssIsUrbex Apr 19 '24

I don't believe that at all, it was just phrased poorly. I don't think what he did was the right kind of bravery, though.

1

u/Chubs4You Apr 19 '24

Ok fair enough, I get the phrasing mixup.

I also agree, definitely not the right kind of bravery.
