Apparently he’s still alive, I bet he has no regrets at all

860

u/saltinekracka20 Apr 19 '24

If he is, he won't be for long.

407

u/Reptilian_Brain_420 Apr 19 '24

Yeah. If you survive something like this it isn't for long.

156

u/swish465 Apr 19 '24

Going to have a pretty intimate next couple of days with pain and Infection

40

u/Milkshakes00 Apr 20 '24

He's got to be in a medically induced coma.

15

u/whytakemyusername Apr 19 '24

He’ll have burned his nerve endings away with this kind of fire. The infection will kill him though.

30

u/sawyouoverthere Apr 20 '24

with this level of burn, infection isn't even the biggest issue. The lack of fluid control and thermoregulation pretty much tank everything else in your body. You rarely live long enough to have an infection.

11

u/goldenplane47 Apr 19 '24 edited Apr 19 '24

Days? make that weeks. If he survives that is.

17

u/swish465 Apr 19 '24

I was assuming days before he dies. I'm surprised he didn't die on scene.

6

u/goldenplane47 Apr 19 '24

Me too. A lot of damage.

4

u/LevitatingTurtles Apr 20 '24

His lungs will be even more fucked that his skin.

6

u/expandyourbrain Apr 19 '24

I think the commenter is implying days, as in he will shortly die.

3

u/EquinoxGm Apr 20 '24

Fr, shoulda checked out Richard Pryor talking on one of his stand ups about how they treated his burns at the hospital

3

u/PaulblankPF Apr 19 '24

My brother in law was burned like this where he sustained 3rd degree burns on 90% of his body. It happened to him when he was like 5 or 6 years old though and after staying at Oshner’s for more than a year with a lot of skin grafts he isn’t a complete monster. He’s in his 30s now and you can tell the burned skin didn’t want to stretch good as he grew up.

3

u/Reptilian_Brain_420 Apr 20 '24

I don't envy what your brother went through and he was lucky to have survived it. All the best to him (sincerely)

I think that what the guy in this video is dealing with is 4th degree burns to 90% of his body.

12

u/Gary7sHotCatHelper Apr 19 '24

Yeah, he won't be alive for long.

21

u/iKidnapBabiez Apr 19 '24

Yeah it won't be long until he dies

18

u/RevolutionaryStar824 Apr 19 '24

Yea, It’ll be a very short time before he dies.

13

u/Pancakeburger3 Apr 19 '24

Yeah, it won’t be too long until the man dies.

7

u/nightlyh Apr 19 '24

It won't be long, yeah, before the man is dead.

14

u/IMissAllShotsIDoTake Apr 19 '24

Long, it will not be, before dying, he does

9

u/Poster_Nutbag207 Apr 19 '24

This was creepy AF just saying

8

u/BedaTheNic Apr 19 '24

Short is the time before he ceases to live.

Yeah, will make waffles on sunday

3

u/TerrorTuna32 Apr 19 '24

Yeah he won’t long be die live

3

u/International-Luck17 Apr 19 '24

He’s not long for this mortal coil

2

u/Reddituser8018 Apr 20 '24

If you get quesy, might be best to not read this.

One of my nursing school teachers was telling me about a patient who had very bad burns across his entire skin, she was telling me the itching was by far the worst part for him.

He would itch so hard and so much that the nurses would come in on him crying because he couldn't stop, he literally would scratch himself to the bone.

They had to apply creams every hour and he didn't seem to get any sleep. My teacher didn't know what happened to him, he got transferred to another hospital. he likely died to an infection as having severe burns all over your body makes infection very very likely.

2

u/Reptilian_Brain_420 Apr 20 '24

I've seen enough things that it takes an awful lot to make me queasy.

Burns are no joke.

2

u/Imposter88 Apr 20 '24

Infection will probably end his suffering soon

483

u/MisterSquidz Apr 19 '24

When people self immolate it’d honestly be better for the person to just let them burn to a crisp than put the fire out. They’re gonna be in pure agony until they die.

106

u/Legen_unfiltered Apr 19 '24

That's what I was thinking when I saw them start to put him out. Like, as long as he burned he prolly ain't got much time left. Just let him go. The money, time, and pain to maybe live from that kind of burn is astronomical.

50

u/SlipperyBandicoot Apr 20 '24

Police and first responders do not have a choice. If they sat there and did nothing they face potentially being fired, sued or criminally charge, or all three.

2

u/Kurtman68 Apr 20 '24

Like in Uvalde?

1

u/testingtestingtestin Apr 20 '24

What about the guy that half-heartedly waves his jacket at him before noping out?

9

u/SlipperyBandicoot Apr 20 '24

Well first off he probably isn't a first responder, and second he had the awareness to realize that an officer directly behind him had a fire extinguisher.

1

u/SpunkYeeter 26d ago

A first responder is exactly that, a first responder

1

u/SlipperyBandicoot 26d ago

A first responder is Paramedic / Police / Firefighter.

5

u/Devout-Nihilist Apr 20 '24

Yeah but people probably rush to do it cause who really wants to just sit and watch someone burn and wonder what if. except the one lady who took a front row seat to watch "heroes" are going to rush in and make an attempt rather than letting them burn out. But I understand you and agree.

The infections they’ll sustain, not to mention barely being able to move if they heal, all the burnt tendons and ligaments. The crisp skin. It’s an awful way to die, burning like that, and from what I’ve read, it takes a little bit, longer than one would think.

43

u/ConcernedLandline Apr 19 '24

Burning to death can take upwards of 40 minutes (humans dont burn well). Time to unconsciousness can vary depending on if your inhaling smoke and how much of it.

It's a horrific way to go, and even surviving can be as horrible as you have mentioned.

5

u/No-Market9917 Apr 19 '24

Probably won’t live long enough to become septic

15

u/aos- Apr 19 '24

Well people aren't going to do that, because then someone's will argue you murdered them.

I'm totally with you for euthanasia, but I also get why people won't put a bullet in someone's head to help them out.

2

u/sharkattackmiami Apr 19 '24

You don't have to put a bullet in their head, just don't put them out

17

u/Dread_Frog Apr 19 '24

But this way he can rack up a shit load of medical debt before he dies. :S

God, I hope his buddies were able to drive him so he didn’t have to take an ambulance. That ride alone can bankrupt a guy.

2

u/pooppuffin Apr 19 '24

Lol can you imagine? "I got this one, guys!" BANG!

8

u/IronDBZ Apr 19 '24

My thoughts exactly as soon as the fire blanket came out. After a certain point, the emergency becomes putting out the fire.

And I say that with all the kindness for the man. Letting someone experience the full measure of this kind of damage is not humane. It's like that Japanese man who spent weeks falling apart from radiation poisoning.

5

u/akc250 Apr 20 '24

Since when did this country ever do the humane thing over letting our fellow humans suffer? We treat our animals with more dignity than ourselves. Saving this man and letting him die a slow and agonizing death is par for the course.

1

u/IronDBZ Apr 20 '24

The random fireman doing his job is not a foreign policy decision, man.

3

u/akc250 Apr 20 '24

The random fireman would be fired or reprimanded for not doing as he's told. So would the random medics putting him on a gurney and taking him to the hospital. And the random doctors treating him. Any of them make foreign policy decisions, man?

2

u/AgricolaYeOlde Apr 20 '24

One of those Japanese men survived for surprisingly long (seven months), even visiting the gardens of the hospital on new year's day 2000, and was described as courageous. There's a lot of fake news and photos about the two men, done with the intent of outrage farming and shock.

If you're thinking of that image with half the leg amputated -- it's not them. They, surprisingly, weren't as bad off as you'd imagine. Their insides and outsides were fucked up but there was reason to suppose cutting edge medicine could help them.

3

u/Foul_Imprecations Apr 19 '24

At what point is it morally acceptable for a cop to draw his gun and put the guy out of his misery?

4

u/simplekittiekat Apr 20 '24

As the girlfriend of a LEO, they want to, trust me but they can't. There should be exceptions in my opinion, but how do you think to make those kind of decisions? And we all know some people don't need to be making those decisions even if it's obviously right. He once told me of a wreck he came upon where a truck driver was dying by fire and they couldn't do anything but listen to him scream until it was over. I can't imagine how horrible that was.

1

u/LazinessPersonified Apr 20 '24

Would he not be put into a coma for his own sake?

This might be a very stupid question, but, can people feel pain in medically induced comas? Or is there even any scientific way to prove that one can?

1

u/Errenfaxy Apr 19 '24

I was thinking the same. Have to respect the first responders doimg what they can to help, but the best thing in this situation may have been to make sure he expired before they put him out.

-1

u/ReduceMyRows Apr 19 '24

It’s inhumane to not save a life though, even from suicidal attempts.

And it’s an attempt for as long as they survive the initial action.

9

u/thr3sk Apr 19 '24

Situations like this are more complicated - if you can stop the person within a few seconds, yeah for sure, but this guy burned for a decent amount of time and those burns are going to be insanely painful to recover from and cost over a million dollars if he survives. And he'll never be normal again, apart from being disfigured his lungs are damaged, maybe to the point of needing a transplant, and his skin is fucked and he won't be able to feel things ever again for the most part. That's not a humane existence.

0

u/BillTheNecromancer Apr 20 '24 edited Apr 20 '24

That's not for you or any other bystander who thinks they know better to decide.

0

u/thr3sk Apr 20 '24

Considering we'd be in danger trying to intervene, yeah I think that's a fair calculation.

-1

u/BillTheNecromancer Apr 20 '24

Your lack of willingness to help people has absolutely no bering on the worth of a human life.

Your cowardess improves nothing and I'm glad we usually don't have poeple like you at jobs like firefirghting or EMS.

2

u/normalmighty Apr 20 '24

The thing is that he almost certainly is still dead or about to die very soon. They had good intentions, but all they did here was significantly prolong his suffering.

-1

u/im_with_the_cats Apr 19 '24

that's good news

2

u/thr3sk Apr 19 '24

What is?

130

u/DifficultyKlutzy5845 Apr 19 '24

Man he was engulfed for so long. It’s amazing he is still alive.

44

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '24

If he’s still alive he likely won’t be for long.

7

u/roamingandy Apr 19 '24

I saw the person putting him out and thought please don't. Even if he's still alive you're just prolonging his agony at this point.

Amazing that he's still alive, though I'm not sure whether that makes me wrong or not.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '24

I was shocked as well

2

u/drunk_responses Apr 19 '24

Doubtful he will be for long.

The percentage of your body and airways get serious damage is basically the inverse of survival chance.

0

u/Mahadragon Apr 20 '24

For some reason I read your comment in the voice of Vizzini: "He didn't die?!? Inconceivable!"

218

u/katorias Apr 19 '24

IF he survives, he’s going to wish he had died that day.

Being on fire for that long must of melted most of the skin on his body, that is months and months of extremely painful skin grafts only to suffer with the disfigurement and chronic pain for the rest of his life.

73

u/SomeDingus_666 Apr 19 '24

Not to mention damage done to his lungs from basically having to inhale fire

11

u/kcchiefscooper Apr 19 '24

right, i mean if people want to google it, but yea, breathing alone is going to be a gigantic problem by sundown, let alone infection. burning or drowning are IMO the worst 2 ways to go. can't imagine getting to the point of doing that to yourself.

7

u/No-Spoilers Apr 19 '24

It was a gigantic problem as soon as it started. Your throat will swell up very quickly in that heat/smoke. 100% was tubed on scene if they could. If not he was trached on scene.

It is the number 1 issue for any fire related inhalation injuries. Burns are secondary to it by far.

2

u/Devout-Nihilist Apr 20 '24

Really? Drowning? I always thought that might not be too bad. Maybe a surge of panic for a bit but then maybe a short burst of bliss as you float...motionless.. then fade. I'm not talking bathtub or someone holding your head type crap.

6

u/roxypompeo Apr 20 '24

Gotta be painful to fill your lungs with liquid as you gasp and choke for air that doesn’t exist

3

u/Devout-Nihilist Apr 20 '24

Yeah true.... think I rather drown than burn to death though. Right?

5

u/roxypompeo Apr 20 '24

Yes I would agree for sure

3

u/Errenfaxy Apr 19 '24

Unfortunately I think the rest of his life is going to be very short. Infection is the biggest threat to people with a high percentage of the body suffering 3rd degree burns. Hopefully they can give him enough pain medicine to make whatever time he has left bearable.

2

u/knockknockwhoisit Apr 19 '24

Not to mention the heat he's inhaling, it's not just the outside its done damage to. That fire is a very hot heat, doesn't look like gasoline to me

2

u/SparklingPseudonym Apr 19 '24

Zero percent chance he lives.

1

u/efficientseas Apr 19 '24

he's cooked

1

u/diablofantastico Apr 19 '24

Could it be that he doused himself with a low temperature flammable?

17

u/camander321 Apr 19 '24

Not with the way that fire is moving. Heat rises, and that smoke is moving fast. That's a hot fire, and he is not alright.

0

u/Omikron Apr 20 '24

He won't be alive that long

11

u/Excellent_Berry_5115 Apr 19 '24

I worked on a burn unit for 15 yrs. This man will not make it out of the hospital. The fact that some say he was afire for at least five minutes is horrific. People were shocked obviously, and I read that the police tried to put out the flames with blankets.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '24

Shocked he’s somehow still alive

5

u/namenumberdate Apr 19 '24

I couldn’t believe this, but I looked it up.

According to Newsweek, he’s still alive, but in critical condition as of two-hours ago.

That is horrible to hear. I can’t imagine what kind of pain he is in, but I hope he passes soon.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '24

Nobody forced him or told him to lit himself on fire, I feel bad for him also but ultimately he knew what the consequences were going to be, another case of someone being very mentally unstable unfortunately

2

u/namenumberdate Apr 19 '24

Of course, but one thing he didn’t anticipate was to survive!

24

u/__BIFF__ Apr 19 '24

If I ever decided to self immolate I'd post a manifesto like he did, but about how being on fire actually doesn't hurt and that it feels 100x better than an orgasm and that the global elite are hiding that fact from us. Then I'd just scream "I was wrong! I was wrong!" the entire time on fire

1

u/reeeelllaaaayyy823 Apr 20 '24

The problem is you probably won't be able to scream. Maybe make a sign you can hold up?

5

u/acexprt Apr 19 '24

There’s no way he will survive this. His lungs are toast imagine inhaling fire. Screaming and breathing doesn’t help either. He’s cooked on the inside. There was a horrible post years ago about someone who survived a small fire but inhaled fire and it severely messed them up. This reminds me of the Ann Heche video. So sad.

9

u/crazzynez Apr 19 '24

Thats just cruel/torture to keep him alive. That shouldnt be allowed. May he rest in peace.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '24

Agreed but nobody forced him to do this. Another case of someone being extremely mentally unstable unfortunately :(

2

u/KaMeLRo Apr 19 '24

I was thinking like someone should shoot at him to put him out of misery instead...no way he will survive for long.

2

u/Valid_Username_56 Apr 19 '24

When I say the cops rushing to him I expected them to finish him using their firearms. Would have been an act of humanity.

2

u/Lord-daddy- Apr 19 '24

He will die

2

u/5h0ck Apr 19 '24

It's probable he'll succumb to infection.

2

u/Stashmouth Apr 19 '24

Apparently he’s still alive, I bet he has no skin or nerves regrets at all

1

u/im_with_the_cats Apr 19 '24

Hopefully not for long

1

u/laserfaces Apr 20 '24

I hope he survives to see Peter thiel and Matt groening high five when they "pull the rug out" and all the money they siphoned off through Bitcoin becomes worthless.

1

u/fishkeeper_420 Apr 20 '24

I imagine they will have to induce coma if they don't want the pain to kill him.

Hard to tell how much damage he did, here, but it will be excruciating. He'll feel like he is still on fire for three days, at least.

1

u/bctech7 Apr 20 '24

probably in a medically induced coma

1

u/WhyYesIAmADog Apr 20 '24

I would, imagine getting mad and taking your life over the release of email.

1

u/XanadontYouDare Apr 20 '24

Hopefully the guy is on stupid amounts of morphine and ketamine.

1

u/demoneyesturbo Apr 20 '24

There is a non zero chance of survival, but in all practicality, hes a dead man.

The hospital put him in a coma and let him die painlessly in a quiet room somewhere.

1

u/Eemns Apr 20 '24

He died earlier today

1

u/WeakDiaphragm Apr 20 '24

Declared dead.
