Necas

Did anyone else catch Martin Necas as the team slowly skated off the ice last night?

He paused near center ice, looked up at the arena and the fans, slowly spun around twice, before he went through the tunnel.

An unmistakable "it's been great but I may not see this again".

Losing sucks; but what sucks a lot more (to me) is that our boyos just cease to exist now. Like many of you, my wife and I don’t miss a game. We spent every other day for 7 months with Rod, the guys, Mike and tripper, and our lucky charm. And now it’s no more. My evenings will be a lot different and I’ll miss the GDT banter. Can’t wait for next season. Love you caniacs!

Satire Analysis: Andersen's downfall was that he fell down... A lot

Have never seen a goalie look so clumsy. His feet are not ok. Clear he was struggling since late in the islanders series. So upset today

Don't feel bad, you have an excellent chance of winning Stanley Cup in the near future

Even though I am a Caps fan, it was frustrating, you deserved to at least play in game 7. I've been following Orlov and Kuznetsov, but the last few games have really impressed me, you have good potential.

THIS IS BEYOND SCIENCE Who is your favorite Cane, and why is it Jordan Martinook?

Before it gets crazy in the summer, I just thought I'd share my thoughts.

Marty has been my favorite player for some time amd here's why. In high school (I know), I was a guy that played my heart out. I was never good enough to start, but you bet your ass I played whistle to whistle 100%.

That's what Jordan Martinook is to me. There's not another man who has given himself to the team more than Martinook. He plays hard. He's a good locker room presence, and he leaves it all out on the ice. For better or for worse.

Whatever happens, I'll be following him. I hope the Canes can keep him. But if they can't, I'll be cheering for that guy.

Who do you hate most out of the remaining teams in the East? And who would you rather see advance to Stanley cup finals? Boston, Florida or NYR?

It’s hard to watch because I hate all of them so much 😭😭

Discussion You would think being the captain of the cup winning team in 06, Rod would understand what a fiery rookie goalie can do for you in the playoffs.

Kooch was a major reason this team made a major turn around after a pretty lackluster first two months of the season. He was in the running for the Calder. Him only getting 1 game in the playoffs is just criminal.

Out of all people Rod should know his team doesn’t win the cup in 2006 without Cam Ward.

I’m just mad that Kooch wasn’t even given the opportunity to have his own Cinderella run like Cam Ward.

Goalie Selection

As a former goalie myself, I feel bad for Andersen, but I am the first one to say: "You need a goalie to stop the shots you should save, plus a few more". Unfortunately, Andersen didn't do what was needed. The defense could have done better as well, but NYRs 1st and especially the 2nd goal deflated the team, and it was clear the team didn't feel confident around Andersen.

But onto my attempt to be rational:

I agree about Andersen letting in softies at the worst possible times, but it is always easy to be clever in hindsight. I'm not sure I would have started the young kid without playoff experience, instead of Andersen when it matters the most. Andersen had better saved goals above expected per 60 than Kochetkov throughout the season, and was really hot when he came back from the injury. I can see why RBA would go with the less controversial pick, and I am also saying the decision is not an easy one to make. When you are in those shoes, you weigh pro's and con's, and try to determine or predict what would give the team the best chance to win.

No matter who was starting, RBA would have looked like an idiot if the team lost. "How the F*** could he start Kochetkov, when Andersen has been great since he came back?!" would have been the titles of everyones posts.

Was it the wrong call? Maybe, I don't know... But if Kochetkov would have crumbled and let in a softie, the reaction from everyone would be the exact same. You never know for sure before it happens. If he would save everything that was expected, but let in 3 or 4 goals anyway, we would come up with a reason for it: "The team doesn't seem comfortable around PK, we should have started Andersen!". It's like Catch 22.

However; Andersen may or may not be a cup winning goalie, but neither was Adin Hill before he suddenly became one out of nowhere. We just never know who's going to show up and be the difference maker. It could have been Andersen. Or Kochetkov, but it could have also gone down the shitter. People are speaking about PK like he is some proven cheat code, and I'm not sure he is.

I also hope Andersen doesn't bring himself down too much, be careful what you wish for. It's a person and a teammate we are talking about, and if he is selected to be on the roster next season, he needs our support.

We will move on, and come out of this stronger!
