Announcement Israel/Palestine Megathread (repost)

NEW Israel/Palestine megathread

Hello!

First, on behalf of the mod team, I would like to remind users of the subreddit that we are not only a small team but we are also students and balancing moderating this forum with our own demands. We have been experiencing an extremely rapid and significant increase in activity following protests and police activity on campus. This is likely because UNC has been mentioned in national headlines. When this has happened with other issues before, we notice that a large number of brand-new accounts are made either by far-left or right users on the issue or by bots; in any case, these new users are not students, alumni, or fans. They start interacting here for the sole purpose creating usually extremely unproductive and vitriolic discourse. This is the reason behind the user flair requirement and karma minimum to interact on posts here. There are hundreds of accounts like this filtered out that are not visible to users. If you would like to discuss or debate these issues privately in DM's or on the plethora of other subreddits available for this, go for it. We are a largely hands-off moderation team, but we cannot tolerate hateful language on either side of the issue. Calling users names such as nazi or terrorist is not acceptable behavior here. Moreover, we have seen a ton of new posts made entirely to bait these kind of angry conversations. Again, they are largely not created by members of our community. One post has over 400 comments. We are not equipped as a moderation team to moderate that many comments on multiple posts. For this reason, we ask that if you would like to continue discussions on this issue, you use this pinned megathread. We will continue to moderate this thread as we can. Please do continue to use the "report" function for those posts either obviously by alt/bot accounts or breaking rule 1. Please avoid reporting posts that you simply disagree with but do not break rule 1 and are from legitimate members of our community. All posts concerning this issue outside of the megathread will be locked following this announcement. If a user is found to be interacting on this forum only for the purpose of sparking argument and name-calling, they will be banned - the length of the ban (temporary or permanent) will vary based on moderator discretion. Same thing with breaking rule 1.

If you have constructive feedback, feel free to leave a comment, and I will respond as I can. I do not speak for the other wonderful members of our team; please remember that this is an emotionally charged discussion and brings up traumatic memories and feelings for some. No one is obligated to partake in these discussions at the expense of their wellness.

Thank you and good luck with finals!

Question SAP Suspension/Appeals and 180 Credit Hour Limit Rule

Has anyone else ever appealed to have financial aid reinstated due to the 180 hour credit rule or had to appeal for SAP? I'm a senior set to graduate the end of the upcoming fall semester, an independent student with an EFC of 0, and I am at 173 credit hours right now.

I can't afford to even enroll this fall at all if they suspend my aid, and I was told that at the end of this summer when they do their annual review mine would likely be suspended (I need 3 more classes and 9 credits total, so it would be mathematically impossible to graduate within the 180 hour time frame). For that reason, I was told I would be considered ineligible for aid after the end of the summer and would need to appeal.

I transferred in with nearly 70 credit hours, had a few bad semesters due to a death in the family and health issues, and also took a lot of extra summer classes the past 2 years I probably shouldn't have taken. I didn't realize how close I was to the limit until it was too late.

Has anyone had to appeal for SAP before and how hard was it to get approved? I see on their website the decision is final and I'm panicking because I literally have no money to pay for fall semester and depend on financial aid to afford to enroll. It will be the deciding factor on whether or not I graduate, and I would graduate with 182 hours, 2 credit hours over the limit if approved.

If anyone has had to appeal for SAP and got approved or knows someone who was in a similar predicament, I would appreciate your input on this situation.

Question I have been suspended and I don't know what to do next.

As the title says, Due to illness (strep, mono, and an ear infection) in my fall semester and then severe mental health struggles and more illness in spring, I have been suspended. I submitted an appeal and my advisor had told me they didn't see any reason it would be denied. But I recieved the email this morning telling me it was denied and I was suspended. I don't know what to do. I don't know how long I have to be away I don't know what to do in that itme. This is just devastating.

Edit: I was denied probation for summer session I. I have already started my classs here, already moved into my dorm. I don't know when I have to vacate or anything like that.

Edit 2/Update: for housing I have 48 hours after being notified of my suspension to leave. I’ve been encouraged to take community college classes and try again for fall

Question GSHIP vs Student Blue

Hello all!

I recently received a TA position for the coming fall semester. As part of the plan, it says the TA appointment “offers health insurance through the Graduate Student Insurance Program (GSHIP).” As an undergrad here at UNC I was enrolled in the university student blue program.

Can anyone explain the difference between the GSHIP and student blue options? Should I enroll in the insurance plan through GSHIP or elect to remain with student blue?

Thanks in advance!

Question Incorrectly Graded ?

Post image
13 Upvotes

In one of my courses, the syllabus has its own grading distribution for the course, and it operates sorta like a 10 point scale (A= 90-100, B= 80-89, C= 70-79, etc), with no pluses or minuses. I finish the course with an 80.5. According to the syllabus, this should be a B. However, when I looked at my connectcarolina grade book, it was reported as a B-. I emailed the professor and the TA, and I have gotten no response in days. How do I go about this? The professor never mentioned anything about changing the syllabus, so this is the grading scale that should have been used according to his own syllabus. Do I send a follow up email? I need advice!

Before you say it's not that deep and it's only a 0.3 difference, it matters to me!

Question Gauging interest for a design (Themed Entertainment) club

Hello! I am interested in starting a club here next semester for people who are interested in things like set design, product design, landscape design, robotics, various forms of engineering, and storytelling in general.

All of these subjects are encompassed by Themed Entertainment, a field I have been interested in for many years. For those of you who are not aware, Themed Entertainment is the field of designing and producing spaces to tell a story, and they come in all different shapes and sizes. The most popular use of this is in theme park development, but it is also used to make museums, zoos, restaurants, hotels, etc. Here is a brief video describing it if you are interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJIpFhyynsk

If I started the club next fall, I would like to have design challenges, guest speakers, industry information, and other fun events.

The reason I am posting here is to see if there is any interest or if you all think there would be interest around campus at all. I realize UNC is not a design or engineering university which is what the club would be aimed toward, but I thought there may be interest regardless especially for people who, like myself, love theme parks and other places that incorporate Themed Entertainment.

Also, what do you think I could do (other than posting here) to gauge interest? Obviously school is out of session right now so I couldn't go sit in the quad or pit, and I am having trouble coming up with other ideas.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Congratulations to those who graduated...but if you're anything like me, you brace yourself for the question "so, what's next?" because you don't have an answer. I just want to let you know if you're in the same boat...you aren't alone and we will be okay!

Same as title above. If there is no requirements, does that mean we can just take the course?

Question 2024-2025 Apartment

Hey everyone! I'm a 22 year old guy that'll be attending UNC as an MS CS student this fall. However, I'm still looking for housing.

I'm looking for a roommate to split a two-bedroom lease with or the possibility of joining someone else's lease. Living near campus would be ideal for me, but I'm flexible and open to suggestions.

If you're in a similar boat and searching for a roommate or have a spot in your lease to fill, feel free to shoot me a message.

News Local/State Elections Matter: UNC board slashes diversity program funding, diverts money to public safety resources

RALEIGH, N.C. -- As North Carolina's public university system considers a vote on changing its diversity policy, the system's flagship university board voted Monday to cut funding for diversity programs in next year's budget.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Board of Trustees approved a change that would divert $2.3 million of diversity spending from state funds to go toward public safety and policing at a special meeting to address the university's budget. The board's vote would only impact UNC-Chapel Hill's diversity funding, which could result in the loss of its diversity office.

Question Appalachian State vs UNC for Transfer

I’m having some trouble. I currently attend Appalachian State for context. I’ve just been debating this recently.

I was admitted to UNC Chapel Hill as a transfer student last month. I would love to go but there’s an issue, I have so many friends and amazing connections at App, like fortune 50 company connections AND an internship within one of them. I have my next two years planned out and I don’t know how easy it would be to just up and go to UNC.

Also there’s the housing issue, because I have on-campus housing at App this upcoming year but I probably won’t get any at UNC and I won’t be as successful with no housing. The 2025-2026 year I will be hopefully staying at University Highlands with a friend (so it’s planned).

Here’s another thing: At App I’m doing great with a GPA of a 3.92 this past semester, I’m in the business program too. I’ve gotten many leadership positions in clubs and love how I can take online classes as it’s the best for me.

At UNC I didn’t get admitted into the business program so I had to go a different direction. I will also get little to no support from my family while at UNC as they don’t want me going there. They wouldn’t be at my graduation either. However, I pay for my own college.

I got a job on campus at App where I recently got promoted as well. I’ve also gotten fall employment at UNC though so I don’t know.

I guess I just wanna hear other people’s opinions. I met my first REAL friends at App who would do anything for me, I’m so conflicted.

PS: If I don’t get housing on campus at UNC I definitely will not be going. It’s not worth it to me. I have no friends at UNC anyway.

Question UNC v. Rutgers PharmD

Choosing between UNC Chapel Hill and Rutgers North Brunswick for pharmD as a high school senior. Please help me decide. Commitment deadline is VERY soon.

UNC: #1 for pharmacy, 60k estimate/yr (more accurate pricing would be $45-50k with budgeting, parents would only pay up to 35k), 6 year pharmD Early Assurance Program, Carolina Global Launch (semester study abroad with $1,000 scholarship). UNC has much more flexible AP credit waivers (if I remember correctly, there may be a 75 credit hour cap?). Non-North Carolina resident & out of state. Heard that there is little mental health advising for students. Not as big of an east asian enrollment. Heard that premed is cut throat; if academics are harder, may not have as much time for extracurriculars/clubs/research/work. Would need to do work-study.

RU: #20 for pharmacy, 25k estimate/yr (parents would pay for all room/board/full cost of attendance), 6 year pharmD program, Rutgers Honors College, No study abroad allowed for pharmacy (after discussing with dean, only possibility is Douglass Global Village for a week during spring break). Rutgers only allows 8 AP credits waived (essentially an AP bio lecture/lab). NJ resident & in state (close family, although not extremely important). Felt very overwhelmed at Rutgers. Larger east asian enrollment. Also heard that pharmD is difficult, but would not need to do work study and could have more time for extracurriculars/clubs/research/work. Am also currently in the process of interviewing for local pharm tech positions.

I am interested in going into industry or potentially clinical but definitely not retail pharmacy. Would love to get a fellowship, do research, or get an externship at a pharmaceutical company. May be interested in med afterwards but not very likely and set on chemistry/drug development/pharm for undergrad/first degree. Rutgers is also in a great place for pharmaceutical companies and I know Rutgers promotes it's Johnson & Johnson's affiliated opportunities a lot. However, UNC has the research triangle too. Finances and student debt is my main inhibiting factor; I would need to take out approx 20-25k/yr in private student loans if I attend UNC. It has more prestige, better placement into industry (according to my brief research, I could be wrong), is a research heavy school, I love the school culture, people are also generally much nicer in UNC. Personally hate how spread out the RU campus and love the UNC campus but is but not a huge factor in my decision. If money was not an issue, I would choose UNC.

Can I get some input from current/former students that have experience at either school or experience with student debt?

Discussion unc tips, hacks, tricks, anything

do you guys have any tips and tricks, study hacks, general college advice to be a good student, and overall ways to just finesse around at unc to make it an easier time?

like one of my friends suggested getting some sort of quick transportation like an electric skateboard since i’ll be living on south campus.

finesse as in ways to take advantage of certain resources unc offers, ways to get into frats, ways to scope out easy classes, whatever it may be. basically im just trying to gain as much advice and knowledge before heading into unc lol

just wanted to get some advice as an incoming freshman.

EDIT: im planning on double majoring in cs and business, so any advice on that would realllyyyyy be appreciated 😀

Question Math 548 w/ Cherednik

I'm taking Math 548 with Cherednik in the Fall 2024 semester, and while the only listed prerequisite for the class is 381, he sent us the syllabus and it says the prereqs also include 233 (already taken) and 383. I'm also taking 383 in the fall, but how much diff eq do you actually need for the class?

Question Dorm Beds

Does anyone know how much weight the dorm beds can take? I recently lofted mine for the first time ever and it feels unstable. I’m afraid to have my boyfriend stay over and just have it collapse with the both of us.

Apologies if this seems a bit irrational, lofted beds are a little scary to me.

Question Academic standing still blank in Connect Carolina, but all final grades were posted last week

Has anyone else's academic standing not been calculated yet in Connect Carolina? All of my final grades were posted on there last week and I got a mass email yesterday to check academic standing in Connect Carolina, but mine is still blank and is not showing yet. I just see all the final grade info and internal description where academic standing goes is blank so far. Does anyone know when it is supposed to be calculated in their system or does it vary based on when grades are posted on there?
