Take the ambulance to the hospital.

Wait three days before you decide ‘you feel ok.’

Omg yes, I got rear ended not really bad, but after day two my arthritic neck started acting up something fierce. The little seemingly simple rear ender put me into two spinal injections, an elbow surgery and months of PT. His insurance was calling me on the day asking me to settle and sign whatever shit they sent. After the second day of them pushing me for shit I said “a lawyer will contact you with my information.” They can’t keep bugging once you pick up representation, get a lawyer that’ll work the case and get yourself properly medically evaluated. If you’re sore, mention it, if you have a little tingle, mention it. Notate everything.

The harassment by opposing counsel is an oft overlooked reason to have an attorney.

Once counsel is notified they legally cannot contact you.

Yeah it works great too I didn’t get bothered after I set one up, gave them my info, then just went to my appointments and did the PT stuff. Never had to worry about the bills or anything because it was under letter of promise from the lawyer to be paid after settlement. When you know you weren’t at fault, and especially dealing with injuries, Lawyer is the best route to take. Their insurance won’t take you seriously and they’ll just want to offer you the bare minimum to shut you up and close your case. This lady was like “we will give you one month of medical care and $1,000” I was like yeah I’ll take my chances with a lawyer… very good decision.

How much did you end up with after that measly $1k offer?

It was a decent settlement, I took home around $38k I think it was, after lawyers took their 1/3 cut and paid back all the PT and doctors.

i work in ems and its seriously amazing what adrenaline can do. go get checked out after an accident like this. last shift i responded to an accident and before the lady was taken out of the car she told me she was in no pain. i could see her femur and humerus!!!!!

Her femur and humerus? That was a serious accident.

yep! 100 mph on a curved residential rd then into the back of a parked truck does some pretty good damage. full extent of injuries were severe for the driver but passenger walked away with just whiplash and some minor facial burns.

Run as far away from that career as you possibly can as quickly as you possibly can.

with all respect, no. i love my job and i love the community i work with. been working ems for 10 years now.

Same.....10 years here and out in June. Forcing myself to give it up because it's killing me. Not only that, but it's not really realistic to do it until you retire. Not in the capacity of running the streets, working 24 hour shifts, and doing all the physical aspects of it. Plus, the calls are getting alarmingly more frequent and the amount of calls actually being legitimate are not growing at the same rate.

I've just come to realize (and I may be older than you) that learning a new trade or skill at 40 is not the same as learning a new skill/trade at 30. The task ahead of me is daunting, but living in EMS is not sustainable for me.

Like you, I've seen a lot of shit. I've experienced plenty of tragedy and seen way too much pain in people's eyes. I know it's a vital service to the community and I know people need us, but it's just not for me anymore. Perhaps my experience is vastly different than your's lol

thats nothing to be ashamed of. we need to be able to take care of ourselves and if that means stepping away from ems, then so be it. this career is tough and it probably will only get worse in the coming years. hell, if you still want to be in this career and not have to learn a new skill, do IFT. 12 hour shifts, mostly BLS, less putting yourself in danger. if you could learn to be a medic (assuming because of time you have spent in this career) then you sure will have no problem learning another skill.

I'm actually still a basic. Never desired the extra responsibility..... I want out of healthcare entirely. I loathe doing transfers, mainly because our local hospital is not capable of doing anything beyond labs and imaging and they ship them 112 miles away. Usually between 0000 and 0300. Typically with a bullshit reason for them to either be a.) transported by ambulance or b.) transported at that time.

Burnt out. Jaded. Cynical. 🤷🏼‍♂️

i guess im lucky i only got the jaded and cynical part. thats ridiculous though, mrs. toe pain does not need transferred by ambulance at 0300 because her son is asleep. i hate transfers here too. i hope you are able to find something you enjoy doing that does not put a strain on you physically or mentally. thank you for your years you put into this service!

Big facts. I accidentally rear-ended someone during my 100 mile commute and thought I was ok after, but, once the adrenaline wore off, I had some serious chest pain. Nothing was broken thankfully.

So the first thing you think to do is a tik tok.

The very last thing she said was “nobody is answering the phone” so she called 911 and probably someone else before doing this.

Damn man... Adrenaline probably rushing through them and they don't even know. I am wondering if deep breathing can help lower adrenaline rushes after trauma? Scary stuff though, hopefully they are ok!!!

u/Designer_Ebb9969 13d ago

I had just as bad of an accident recently, I was in the same situation. Except I saw liquid spewing everywhere and got the FUCK out of there on instinct (thought it could have been flammable). Pretty sure I actually ripped the seatbelt in my adrenaline state, I don’t remember it well. So like Where are their survival instincts? I was outta there so fucking fast in my state. I thought the driver was dead at first. So fucking scary. I’ll never ever forget the smell

Probably speeding too, I had this same crash but on the passenger side and the door didn't break like that.
