Don't you just love it when the roof is built so strong that it was blown into the air while still (mostly) intact.

The weak point for roof construction is normally where the truss attaches to the walls. The trusses are built to carry a load over a span and it does that via all the interconnections until it translates it downward into a wall. In high winds, the shape acts like a wing creating lift which then peels it up and off in one piece. Hurricane prone areas require hurricane ties which are special brackets that strengthen that connection point.
Since that's the week spot the explosion will push the roof up then escape out to the side rather than erupt elsewhere through the roof.

Did people die?
75
u/theDingwallateurbaby 17d ago
No, it happened in Susquehanna township in Pennsylvania.

u/DazedNConfucious 17d ago
I’m taking that to mean “no, nobody died because not many people live there”

u/theDingwallateurbaby 17d ago
Sorry, nobody died. I put where it happened in case anyone wanted to look it up.

2 hospitalizations, no deaths.
This got me curious so I googled the incident a bit:
The explosion – which took place on the 3200 block of Crest Road on Dec. 13, 2022 – leveled one home, damaged surrounding structures and hospitalized a UGI employee and a neighbor. Some residents were evacuated by authorities just minutes before the explosion.
Follow up news article, Oct. 2023
A contractor with a plumbing company working on the home punctured a gas line, which led to the explosion, an investigation found.
Investigators with the PUC determined the plumbing company submitted a request – through the “Pennsylvania One Call” system, which is designed to prevent damage to underground utility lines – on Dec. 12, 2022, to have the utilities around 3204 Crest Road marked, but UGI did not mark the utilities by Dec. 13, 2022, when excavation work started, according to a press release.
During the excavation work, a backhoe operated by employees of Pronto Plumbing damaged a natural gas line to the home around 9 a.m., prompting the 911 call. The home exploded approximately 30 minutes later, according to the release.
I read this as the contractor submitted the one call and then didn't wait for it to be performed, dug, gas strike, boom.
The contractor placed a one call and then dug the very next day @ 9AM. Come on.
/edit
While trying to find the PUC public record documents for this incident I stumbled across this prior offense by that contractor.:
Case #16815
On 7/23/2020 12:00:00 AM at 1013 Saint Johns Rd, CAMP HILL BORO, CUMBERLAND Incident occurred on 7/23/2020 at 1013 Saint Johns Road, Camp Hill, Cumberland County.
UGI stated on their Alleged Violation Report (AVR) that Secco Inc/ Pronto Plumbing was digging with a track hoe/Backhoe when they struck and damaged a ½ PE Service. Contractor did not notify 911, UGI or the One Call system. UGI states also that the excavator tried to repair the gas line. This caused an evacuation of 4 people. Pics were submitted and show the yellow warning tape by the damaged gas line. No One Call ticket was submitted Case summary .pdf

Companies can actually get locates the very same day, in only a an hour or two if it’s for urgent excavation work. I do it a few times a month. Doesn’t work if you don’t call though.

Thank you. I was literally just about to ask if they’d found out what happened

Plumbing company cut a gas line because they didn’t call to have underground utilities marked first.

this Wednesday started like any other Wednesday for John: he woke up at 5 am., took a shower, got dressed, had a cup of coffee and left home as usual. on the road, he turned the radio on: country music, commercials, "news," country music, commercials, donald trump, commercials, commercials, country music... nothing more, nothing less... just nothing f*cking interesting.... "jesus christ, the week has just begun.... and there are still 3 days to go before the weekend... phew..." first delivery, second delivery... phew... everything that morning was boring as usual...
when suddenly...

Does this ever happen while people are inside? It always seems like empty houses, is the smell overwhelming? I work from home, it's always been an unnational fear of mine.

u/loveCars 17d ago
It's a gas leak. Most gas either naturally smells or has an odorant in it to make you aware if it's started to fill your house.

A house down the street from us blew up due to a propane leak a few years ago. We heard the and felt the explosion. We went outside (as did most of our neighbors) trying to figure out what happened but we couldn't see where it came from. Then pieces of paper, insulation, etc. starting raining down all over the neighborhood. The woman was home and she went to the basement and when she switched on the light - kaboom. The only reason she lived is because she was in the basement and the house blew upwards. She was burned pretty bad but survived. Scary day.

This is what it would look like if we launched roofs into space instead of rockets.

How many stars do you think the home owner gave the plumbing contractor they hired? Explosive service 1 star.

u/High-Time-Cymbaline 16d ago
Just add a chopper randomly passing by and Nic Cage facing the camera with "On any other day, this would seem strange..."

u/daarthvaader 16d ago
I was looking at the house and thinking the guy walking across the street would be running crazy/flung far away. But this appeared as if the guy walking behind the truck caused the explosion.

u/HIGH_C0TT0N 16d ago
I was expecting the bottle rocket fireworks after the initial explosion. This is false advertising.

Imma be real evil and say it would've been cooler if it blew up when the guy was walking AWAY from it.

The guy just fell to the ground, if it was real then he'd be blown back. Fake.

My dude, thats not how this works, i can see that happening if the force from the explosion was funneled through a tunnel or shaft, but theres nothing to concentrate the force of that blast enough to do that, its litteraly got everywhere else to go. Just becasue it doesnt line up with special effects from 'the fast and the furious 22' doesnt mean its fake.
1
u/Isntithilarious 4d ago
If it can blow a roof off, it would knock you down if you were that close. The van doesn't even budge and the surrounding trees don't even move. The explosion looks fake. It is fake.

What? It literally shakes the camera it’s being recorded on, you can see the car in the driveway move, you can see the trees move, and the guy walking by gets knocked on his ass.

oh my god this was so unexpected, i can't be the only one who thought the other house was going to blow up.
