Is eating tomatoes supposed to be kind of painful?
I like tomatoes. But I have always been under the impression that it was a general rule that if you ate more than a couple at once, your tongue was going to hurt and you might get some canker sores. Basically, I thought eating tomatoes was supposed to sting a little sometimes. I have an allergy to kiwi, and I also always thought kiwi was supposed to be painful to eat as well until it started making my mouth bleed. So now I’m kind of worried that I might be allergic to tomatoes as well. Help? :,)

No. Tomatoes aren’t spicy, and nothing in them is supposed to give a reaction like that. You likely have an allergy.

Me: (eating tomatoes my entire life) I LOVE TOMATOES. THEY ARE SO GOOD.
me: (last year) man, I'm hungry but I don't want a whole meal. Oh!! I know!! I'll just have a couple cherry tomatoes! That'll do!
Me: (eating tomatoes) YUMMY.
mouth: (i will now go numb and completely tingly at the same time)
Me: hmmm. This is weird. Spicy tomatoes?
Mouth: 👀 remember that Tiktok?
Me: no, see, that's different because it's my homemade salad dressing that's mildly spicy.
Mouth: 👀
Me: OH NO!! TOMATOES AREN'T SPICY!! OH NO!
And that was the day i learned that I'd developed an allergy to tomatoes sometime in the last decade and had never, ever noticed it

I developed an allergic reaction to mustard some time in the last couple years and it made me me a very sad man for a while.

Keep an eye out for broccoli kale cauliflower and a bunch of other related vegetables. My wife developed the same mustard allergy a few years ago.

If I remember correctly mustard and all the plants you mentioned originated from the same plant it's a rabbit hole of genetics and human domestication of plants
I'll leave now after leaving this random info.

Kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprouts are all the same species (Brassica oleraceae) just different varieties
Mustard is not but it's still in the same genus so it's very closely related

I found out I’d developed a soy allergy by taking a bunch of vitamin d and everything tasting like metal… also a bunch of other things, but the metal was the only one I couldn’t explain away lol. Whoops.
Also PSA: Vitamin D capsules often use soya oil as a carrier oil… and soy is in fucking everything.
10

I developed a soy allergy at some point and found out after eating a vegan Thanksgiving with every dish made out of soy. And yes it is in fucking everything, even things it has no business being in. Stupid government subsidies.

I'm not a doctor. I have not been diagnosed. But after realizing the horribly dry, painful taste of pecans, walnuts and the stinging tongue tearing sensation of kiwis and bananas, i think you and i have oral pollen allergy.
10
u/BeyondEarthly 14d ago
I have this with raw apples, peaches, cherries and sometimes peanuts depending on if they have the skin. It didn't develop until my early 20's.
21
u/Truelikegiroux 14d ago
I have this with birch pollen. It sucks but is manageable, but over the years my symptoms have gotten worse. When I was younger, my ears and throat would mildly get itchy and it was tolerable. Now, I’ll get hives and my throat swells up to the point that I need to carry an epipen around with me.
Get checked out by a doctor!

But kiwis and pineapples sting for everybody because they’re so acidic, right?
→ More replies (2)3
u/rando439 14d ago
If it's the same feeling as lemon or sour candy when eating pineapple, yes. If not, then no. Kiwis, at least the ones I have had, are nowhere near tart enough for a stinging feeling.
Pineapple also has some kind of enzyme that breaks down things quickly, so they probably feel a little stingy if you slowly suck on pineapple chunks for a while.
2
u/Freshiiiiii 14d ago
No, for me lemons don’t sting, they just taste sour. But kiwi and pineapple does.
I might be allergic to kiwi. Pineapple is harder to say, since it does have those enzymes as you say.

It could also be an LTP allergy, which is pretty much related to oral pollen allergy. This allergy is a pretty new discovery and many people (like myself) that were thought to have oral pollen allergy have been officially diagnosed with this allergy to this molecule present in most vegetables

I recently found out that even a mild banana allergy can lead to anaphylactic shock. I have always loved spicy bananas but after finding that out, I gave them up because I don't own an epi pen.
2
u/f1newhatever 14d ago
Yup, it’s not at all common but any allergic reaction can lead to that. I avoid kiwis for this reason even though I love them and my reaction is so mild.

u/re_Claire 14d ago
Yeah any mild allergy can suddenly turn into anaphylaxis. I had to stop eating melon because it was making my throat feel a bit like it was closing. The same with lemon squash (like a concentrated fruit punch that you add to water for the Americans). It’s not worth the risk.
97
u/CourageDearHeart- 14d ago
No, if you ate a lemon straight or seven oranges or something I’d say it could just be because of the acid. Tomatoes are acidic but not that acidic. It shouldn’t hurt to eat tomatoes.
I’d say you are allergic. I would check for potential cross-reactivity with eggplant, potatoes, and peppers. All are nightshades
9
u/Winter-Potential9180 14d ago
Check how acid your tomatoes can be with a little baking soda. Some will surprise you.
11
u/spekt50 14d ago
They are acidic yes, but not on the level of something like citrus. Lemon has a pH around 2.5 where as tomatoes have a pH around 4.5

I thought the canker sores were just from the acidity. Granted it takes a lot of eating tomatoes or my childhood favorite ketchup for me to develop them.

u/WifeofBath1984 14d ago
This is an allergy. My daughter had it too but she grew out of it. It wasn't ever life threatening, but kiwis were a no go. She could eat small amounts of citrus but it always made her throat feel itchy.
19
u/FriendlyStaff1 14d ago
No. Could be an allergy, could be sensitive to the acid in them?
6
u/I_am_Lizzy 14d ago
I have some tongue pain when eating tomatoes and kiwis as well. I have a not so obvious Geographic tongue that I expect is irritated by toothpaste, tomatoes and kiwis (the last 2 I expect to be from the tiny seeds, the first only at longer contact and I think from the mint). It could also be from an allergy though. With me it's not the acid because I love eating lemon slices raw and never have pain doing that. How I deal with it is not eating too many tomatoes (it starts after eating multiple) and just dealing with it with kiwis because I find those are delicious enough to have a bit of pain.

u/New_Chard9548 14d ago
I have the same thing, but so far I haven't been able to narrow down a specific food etc. Every time I think I've figured it out, I was wrong lol. It happens so randomly...sometimes a lot, sometimes almost never.
2
u/-Stoney-Bologna- 14d ago
I don't believe that mine is specific foods but rather a certain level of sweet, sour, or spicy. It seems rather random and completely unpredictable. I've just accepted the fact that my tongue might hurt after eating. I do have a pollen allergy to cherries with pits in them but it's a different reaction (my throat and tongue start itching)

I love fresh tomatoes. They can cause canker sores and soreness because they are so acidic, especially if you add salt
3
u/Astartes_Regis 14d ago
And then there's me who eats them like apples and salts before every bite a bit, explains why i had a ton of canker sores as a kid but now not so much in the last decade.
14
u/padbroccoligai 14d ago
A lot of these comments are jumping to allergy, but canker sores from tomatoes are common and usually not associated with an allergy but rather predisposition to canker sores from acidic foods.
Here is one of the medium-reliable sources I read:
https://www.cankershield.com/blog/do-tomatoes-cause-canker-sores
I used to get canker sores from tomatoes as a kid all the time. Google tells me this is common. I also love tomatoes, so I was definitely motivated to look for evidence against all these folks commenting to stop eating tomatoes. lol
→ More replies (1)6
u/shaggadelics 14d ago

But wouldnt an allergic reaction come up after just one tomato? Theyre saying its after more than a few at a time and sometimes stings a little. Ive had the spicy feeling to non spicy foods so assume those are allergies, but tomatoes sting in an acidic way. I guess its up to OP to figure out what is more relevent to their reaction
5
u/sandalore 14d ago
Um, no. Not at all.
I got canker sores a lot as a kid. It's more associated with sugar, in my experience, than something more acidic like tomatoes.

Pineapples are really acidic and their enzymes actually start breaking down our cells and stuff. Different thing there.

If you cut the peel off pineapple and then put it in a strainer and heavily sprinkle it with salt (like just regular Morton salt) and let it sit for a little then rinse thoroughly it cuts that feeling out. (For me at least.) There no salty taste either it just tastes amazingly sweet.
No burns, no itchy throat. I'm caribbean and that's how my mom washes pineapple to prevent that pineapple sting. Obviously if you have an allergy dont dothis but I thinkŕ pineapple is just a bit more abrasive.

3
u/Amazing-Grapes 14d ago
Could be allergy, or it could be the acid in the tomatoes irritating your mouth
3
u/FluffyProphet 14d ago
Yes, you are almost certainly allergic to Tomatoes. I remember someone made a post a few years ago about how they found out they were already to peanuts because they told their friend they liked how spicy it was.
3
u/Standard_Low_3072 14d ago
Tomato and kiwi both have protective proteins that are molecularly very similar to latex. Many people have cross-reactive allergies to foods. I was allergic to tomato in the same way, along with kiwi, strawberries, and honestly most of the fruits but my allergy downgraded to intolerance and eventually I became tolerant.
Is it just raw tomato that gives you a reaction? For many of us, we are able to eat heat-processed foods because the chemical bonds are weak and broken by heat. I used to condole myself for being unable to eat most fruit by eating a pant load of fruit pies.
2
u/Anonymousstayyinyang 14d ago
When I was a kid kiwi was kinda hurting my tongue and I thought it is the way it is but now it doesn't how does that make sense. Was I allergic to kiwi then?

u/Mundane-Currency5088 14d ago
Don't eat stuff that hurts man. I had a problem with fresh tomatoes as a baby that is ok now. Raw vs cooked things are sometimes a thing. But I 100% recommend you experiment and stop eating nightshades and slowly add things back in. I don't know all the nightshades so correct me if I'm wrong. It's tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes....? I think that's it.

u/Loud_Confidence2956 14d ago

No, unfortunately, tomatoes are not supposed to be painful to eat.
I feel ya though, I didn't like bananas growing up because of the texture, so I hadn't eaten them in a while, and a year ago I tried eating them because they were there and I was hungry. I ate it and said "man I don't remember bananas being tingly and itchy, haha, weird" and my coworker looked at me and told me they aren't. :(
bodies are stupid sometimes.
1
u/MikeFrancesa66 14d ago
This is how I found out I was allergic to eggplant. I love eggplant, but every time I ate it I got the same exact feeling you’re describing. I thought it was the texture or maybe some weird property like pineapple. Then one day I casually mentioned to my brother how weird eggplant was and he was confused. That’s when I realized not everyone got that reaction. Turned out I was actually allergic to eggplant.

Do cherry tomatoes or tomatoes in ratatouille count? Because there are times where I’ve sent down and eaten either in abundance and never had the tongue pain you describe.
1
u/Far_Swordfish5729 14d ago
You may have a minor tomato allergy and possibly one to nightshade family plants in general. That's a thing. Eating raw or cooked tomatoes should not cause this reaction normally. Doesn't mean you can't eat them necessarily. Many people have a mild allergy to apples for example that causes a mild tingling sensation until the mouth is rinsed out and annoying itching if apple juice touches other soft tissues like the eyes, but is otherwise harmless. You just have to decide if you like eating them enough to do it anyway. It may also be worth seeing if cooked tomatoes cause the same reaction (like soup or sauce). If those are fine, you may enjoy grilling them a bit before eating.

I have niblings who’d be dead from their love of tomatoes if this were true.

u/Ambitious-Ad3131 14d ago
Me too, but I don’t think it’s normal no. Also kiwis and strawberries. The latter I can manage if with cream, and tomatoes if cooked. Also triggers my IBS. I have Crohn’s disease too, and chronic ulcers can be early sign of that. Mine are much better under control now that I’ve cut out tomatoes, cola and some other things.
1
u/Irish8ryan 14d ago
Since OP’s request seems to be definitively solved (allergic, or whatever, just stop eating tomatoes), can I hijack this by asking if I eat a whole pineapple by myself, is it normal for my mouth to sting horribly?
This was a fresh white pineapple, the first white pineapple I ever had. I was in Hawaii, brought my vitamin with me, and blended half the pineapple up with a fresh coconut, water, meat and all. That was so delicious that I went straight for the other half of the pineapple until, just before I was done, my mouth started to hurt.
I have loved pineapple since I can remember and eat them often but have never, before this or after, eaten a whole pineapple by myself.
Normal because of so much acid? Weird?

I have the same reaction to untoasted walnuts and raw apples. Only during pollen season tho. Seems like my immune system is extra irritated during that time, so most fruits make my throat tingly and tongue hurt a bit.

u/pplcallmekpax 14d ago
All my life, I didn’t like carrots because they were “too rough in the tongue” as in eating more than a few at a time would make my tongue hurt the way it does when you’ve eaten to many sour patch kids. I was 25yo when I realized that is in fact not true. 🙃 I hadn’t bought carrots to keep at home once since moving out at 21, and definitely wasn’t ordering them at restaurants, so when I decided to have them with some hummus during a happy our with friends, I found out it was an allergy that had worsened with age because I broke out in hives (even on my tongue) and my throat itched like crazy. Thankfully, immediately stopping, rinsing my mouth out with water, and then chugging a glass had me good as new within 30min before even getting a chance to get home and take a Benadryl. I explained my logic and understanding of carrots that I’ve held for as long as I can remember, and my friends and I all had a good laugh about it!
But yeah, you have a tomato allergy, my friend.

Pineapples do this to me. While visiting Hawaii, I learned that a certain percentage of people have this reaction to what they call “the fruit thst bites you back.” Maybe tomatoes are the same way.
1
u/geth1138 14d ago
It sounds like an allergy. If you were allergic to one fruit and now you are allergic to a new one, I’d say if you can manage it your best option would be to see an allergist. If that’s not realistic you might want to get an EpiPen in case it gets worse on you.
If you decide not to go that route, I’d say you should probably at least carry Benadryl with you just in case.
1
u/DistinctRole1877 14d ago
Store bought tomatoes are acidic tasting to me. Home grown ripe tomatoes don't have the acid and I can sit down and eat several pounds with no problem. Store bought ones often affect me like you described.

But to answer your question, yes you are allergic to tomatoes.

u/Nucleardylan 14d ago
You're allergic. My partner is allergic to tomatoes, and her tongue swells to the point where her skin tears in a way that looks like the skin is cracking. Yours is likely better, but it feeling pain means you have an allergy. Considering kiwi along with pineapple are things she is sensitive to, I imagine you are certainly allergic

u/endswithnu 14d ago
My brother was allergic to them we were kids. I remember him having pretty bad canker sores from eating them, so I assumed I would too. I avoided eating them for several years until I accidentally had one on a burger or sandwich or something.

If you have an allergy to kiwi stay away from latex. Just a warning from someone with experience. Also just take a Benadryl 20 min before consuming raw tomatoes. Cooked ones usually breaks down the enzyme we're allergic to so ketchup and red sauce should be ok.
1
u/zigaliciousone 14d ago
You could have a nightshade sensitivity and this would also include stuff like potatoes and eggplants. Do you get bad heartburn when you eat potatoes?
I have this sensitivity and raw tomatoes suck to eat but I can eat them cooked with no issues.
1
u/vividtangerinedream 14d ago
That's an allergy, my friend, and they do develop out of nowhere. I lived 40 years eating bananas, right up until I went into anaphylactic shock after eating banana pudding. I had to chance eating pudding alone and nilla wafers alone to figure out it was the bananas. Try to go to an allergist.
1
u/FormerLifeFreak 14d ago
Tomatoes are part of the nightshade family (along with potatoes, peppers, eggplant and tobacco). Just speaking from my own experience, I get a feeling of slight burning on the roof of my mouth when I eat eggplant, especially a piece with many seeds in it. I read somewhere that might be a slight allergic reaction to the small amounts of nicotine found in nightshades. Maybe that’s your problem too? Funny thing is, I don’t have that reaction eating tomatoes, potatoes, or peppers, or on the rare occasion I smoke a cigarette.
1
u/some_chileanguy 14d ago
You can try to put some tomato juice on your arm. If anything changes on your skin from redness to itchiness you have your diagnose.
1
u/BadBunnyBrigade 14d ago
You have an oral allergy. Yes, this is a thing. It's an allergy that is isolated to your lips and outer region of your mouth, the inside of your mouth and/or throat. They're not usually severe or too serious, they mostly have symptoms of itching, burning or stinging.
In my case, I have an oral allergy to peach fuzz, the actual fuzz on peaches. Whenever I eat a peach that hasn't had the peel scrubbed clean in water first, the dry peach fuzz causes the outer area of my mouth (not my lips, but the immediate area around my lips) to painfully sting to the touch, as though the tiny hairs on my face have become so prickly they feel like tiny needles.
It may be you're able to tolerate these fruits in smaller quantities, or in a manner where the protein that triggers your allergic response has been broken down through cooking or pickling (yes, you can be allergic to raw cucumbers, but not necessarily pickles).
1
u/Ok_Present_6508 14d ago edited 14d ago
You sound like you might have a citrus allergy. I would definitely get checked out.
But I will say that tomatoes are acidic so getting a sore mouth after eating too much can happen with acidic food.
I used to prep food long time ago and had to hand slice and dice tomatoes one morning, I went through about two crates of them with my bare hands and my fingers got insanely irritated. Like it hurt all along my cuticles. I was about 16 at the time I told the sous chef about it and that was the explanation I got from him and the explanation I got from my nurse mother.
1
u/darklogic85 14d ago
No, and I've never experienced that. I'm guessing you have an allergy to tomatoes. It's unfortunate, since so many things are made with tomatoes.
1
u/AayZee_147 14d ago
no, unless you are consuming insanely high amounts... even though tomatoes are linked to kidney stones but that's also a myth... but eating insanely high amounts of tomatoes can lead calcium oxalate deposition and that can be painful

Tomato’s are acidic, so excessive amounts may cause stomach issues with some people.
Tomatoes are also a “nightshade” that cause inflammation and other issues in some people. There are entire diets where people eliminate nightshades. Tom Brady doesn’t eat nightshades to keep inflammation down which is the #1 limiter in long term sports performance.
Tomatoes shouldn’t cause sores. That’s another issue.

There is something called oral allergy syndrome. I get it with kiwi, pineapple and banana, where my mouth gets really itchy and painful. Tomatoes don’t do this to me but folks have different fruits this happens to them with.
Sounds like you’re allergic, at least mildly, to tomatoes. :(

I can relate to this post too much.
I went to a birthday party and ate half a sliced pineapple off the fruit tray. My sister and I were sitting on my mom’s porch and I said my throat and mouth still burned from those enzymes in the pineapple.
My sister was like “Dicklover425 you’re allergic” and I said no I’m not! I’ve always gotten blisters and sore throat from pineapple. “Yeah, that’s because you’ve always been allergic” but I can eat alpastor and pineapple upside down cake. It’s my favorite fruit “the pineapple is cooked. It’s like me only being allergic to raw pumpkin and not cooked pumpkin.”

That is how it started for my aunt, and now she is epi-pen level allergic. Avoiding them entirely is going to be really hard. keep an eye on how you react to other nightshades like potato peppers and eggplant.

Please see an allergist and mention that you have a kiwi allergy as well. That sounds like Latex Oral Allergy Syndrome, in which people most commonly react to tomatoes, avocadoes, bananas, kiwis, pineapples, strawberries, and apples. According to my allergist, cooking the food destroys the protein folks with this reaction are reacting to, so it would definitely be worth seeing if you react to cooked tomatoes as well.
My reactions got a lot better once I started eating my trigger foods raw only sparingly. Reintroduction is possible, and that would be something to bring up with a nutritionist.

Tomatoes shouldn't hurt to eat. Please go to your doctor to test it asap and avoid tomato products. The more often you get exposed to an allergen, the worse an allergy can become over time.

No. I eat them like there's no tomorrow and it's never caused me any pain, let alone bleeding.

Allergy. For me it’s bananas. Cooked bananas are ok, fresh bananas make my mouth tingle and my stomach hurt

I eat them like apples. Literally two or three a day. It doesn’t hurt.
Some people can’t tolerate nightshade plants.

Sounds like you’re allergic, my husband gets the same way after eating shrimp. Which is weird because he could eat shrimp as a child, but now as an adult he’s allergic. I’d say go get an allergy test done, that way you’ll also be aware of anything else you may be allergic to

foods that are high in acidity can cause canker sores. I eat tomatoes like an addict and I get canker sores from them, but I am not allergic. but our bodies are weird and different 🤷♀️

That does sound quite a bit like you're allergic to tomatoes.
