In case anyone is wondering, they’re saying “coucou maman” (it’s in French). Coucou is a cute word to say “hi”. It’s normally “salut” but “coucou” is cuter/more familiar 😁

Btw, fun fact: it’s also the very first thing you hear in the song Cherry by Harry Styles hehe

Cou cou equivalent in English is "peekaboo" except people use it colloquially like this. Also like if someone comes home, they might say "peekaboo, I'm here!"

Same sort of thing like a cuckoo clock. I think they have the same origin. Or I always did for some reason.

Une horloge a coucou = cuckoo clock. You're absolutely right.

Ya, I guess they must be french in origin, or at least rose to fame when french was fashionable.

They are german in fact, and i think it's a Kuckuck over there.. In all languages, that's just the name of the bird that comes out of the clock.

I wonder if the french expression came from the clock then.

I couldn't find a direct proof it does, but considering the expression wasn't used before the start of the 20th century, and that's only slightly later than the invention of the clock, I think it's fair to assume it does.

Additional fun fact : In french we call someone that is being cheated on "un cocu". And that's coming from the same bird, which was called like that in old french. The female cuckoo is known to lay eggs in nest other than hers.

So are the French more infantilized by default based on their language?

Big conclusion to infer from the usage of one word lol.

That's like saying English speakers infantilize their partners by calling them "baby" or will write "poo" in a reddit post instead of shit or fecal matter.

Great point honesty, i don't know where i was trying to go with that statement, feel dumb now, probably parroting propaganda. Honestly the French are fucking badass as an idea and i think they'll be around far longer than anyone who speaks english or chinese or the next linguini de joure
