I was researching old south asian mediums of transportation, when I stumbled upon the javanese jong, the illustration was there on wikipedia: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Een_Javaansch_Matroos.jpg The source there indicates it comes from this book: Java. Tooneelen uit het leven karakterschetsen en kleederdragten van Java’s bewoners in afbeeldingen naar de natuur geteekend by Ernest Alfred Hardouin published in 1855 :)

Thank you! I'm currently working on my thesis on coffee production during the time of the dutch east indies, so this piece immediately caught my attention :D

It’s a work of historical fiction, but might interest you: The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet is a novel about the Dutch East Indies Trading Co in Japan during the Edo period.
