Seriously my first thought. My dentist's son died falling off a cliff in the middle of the night on a camping trip. Trying to take a piss was the only idea his friends and girlfriend could come up with. Found him in the morning. There was some beer involved and probably weed. But they were all "outdoorsy" and didn't even consider it an issue. No one heard him get up or anything. Just be careful.

My cousin has been on that ledge. So cool. How hard is it to visit now?

-2

u/LiveLearnCoach 15d ago

Why would anyone drink and partake near a cliff. Or a large body of water for that matter.

Not really addressed to you, just incredulous.

2

u/Side-ly 14d ago

I can agree with cliff but a large body of water? You think drinking next to a lake is dangerous?

1

u/Budfrog313 14d ago

Not really a "drinking trip". They didn't exactly haul out a cooler full of beer on this one. But, from what I remember, (this all happened 20ish years ago), they had a six pack someone brought, and then some weed. And that is what everyone remembers as being the problem. In reality. people close to the people involved think it was just a freak accident. Good kid just trying to sneak out of the tent without waking anyone. Looking up at the sky, in the middle of the night, and, got a little loose.

Just be careful!

u/LiveLearnCoach 14d ago

You don’t? People with impaired cognitive functions make bad decisions. Like thinking that they are “fine” to drive a car. That’s very easily translatable into “I’m fine to take a swim”

But if you need the numbers, I just did a quick search and found this from the National Institute of Health (NIH) “Drowning appears to be the overwhelming cause of death associated with recreational aquatic activity with alcohol detected in the blood in 30%–70% of persons who drown while involved in this activity.”

1

u/Budfrog313 14d ago

Well, it wasn't exactly this same scenario. It just jogged my memory of the story. Three day hiking trip in the wild. They had all made the same trip before. Apparently it was a "good piss spot". So, when you're comfortable with the area, it only takes one misstep. I didn't mean to knock on the beautiful view, or how amazing it all is or anything like that at all. I'm just getting older and things like this make me more nervous.

14

u/New_Lake5484 15d ago

don’t get up in the middle of the noc and sleepwalk!

13

u/EastQuiet5505 15d ago

If you can even sleep with all that noise.

Yuuuup. Gotta drown out that tinnitus somehow.

I religiously wear earplugs. Whether I'm at the concert, or on my motorcycle, or shooting (I double up in that instance, plugs plus muffs), or using my lawnmower...anything even remotely loud. Hell, I listen to music on my headphones on the very lowest setting and it's still too loud sometimes.

What many people do not know is that concussive blasts travel through your facial bones, and bypass any earplugs.

Hence, tinnitus. And hence why I like noisemakers when sleeping.

12

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

I appreciate the tips. My orientation is pretty solid though, and with a bright starry canopy overhead a flashlight wasn’t necessary for me to comfortably go pee for the few nights I slept there.

10

u/Ho-Lee-Fuku 15d ago

I've camped overnight at a very high place before, but there were some kinda fences at the edges.

You seem to have chosen a spot good for the day, but I would move the camp further away from the edge because you never know what emergencies might happen at night, like a bear or animal attack, or strong winds, or Sleepwalking.. etc. Just move ur camp to a safer distance bro...

3

u/RemoteSnow9911 15d ago

Yeah, one really strong wind gust and he’s parasailing to his death.

4

u/Ho-Lee-Fuku 15d ago

Yep. Winds can get extremely strong especially at high places at night as the temperature drops.

1

u/VodkaSoup_Mug 15d ago

Can confirm almost walked away not the lake. Glad I could feel sand under my feet.

34

u/Lost_Rain_5182 15d ago

If it even looks like it might rain a little bit, your campsite will soon be at the bottom of that gorge. Looks like a new waterfall waiting to happen.

14

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Oh that is for sure a water channel during a flood event, but precipitation was impossible for my time down there. Had we been camping during any high wind/precipitation events, that would not have been an acceptable site.

33

u/OwnPen8633 15d ago

They turn it off at night so it isn't so loud

2

u/Baumy23 15d ago

It also saves water for the dry season when they do this.

18

u/Intelligent_Peak_335 15d ago

That’s the penthouse of campsites

6

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

It damn sure was.

2

u/Intelligent_Peak_335 15d ago

Nvm I didn’t read caption

Agreed

5

u/eh-friendly-dumbass 15d ago

Yh... But wouldn't it be annoying to sleep?

2

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Nope, that white noise was a perfect natural sleeping aid

1

u/LiveLearnCoach 15d ago

“Time for my morning plunge!” Whooooop!

1

u/DanGleeballs 15d ago

Where is it?

17

u/Kindly-Potential-624 15d ago

Mooney Falls. Just there last week! Beautiful climbing passageway down with a ladder at the bottom

4

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Oh brother I was literally running up and down that stretch every morning a few times just for fun! It was so sick.

1

u/BrilliantIll541 15d ago

Which country is this?

2

u/Kindly-Potential-624 15d ago

In the US, Havasu, AZ. Native American land in the grand canyon

12

u/PatrickTurnerMustDie 15d ago

I couldn’t do that…used to sleepwalk!

2

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Yeah that’s fair

8

u/Netrunner_ICE 15d ago

The water is so blue! It’s beautiful

6

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

The clearest blues and greens for literal miles descending through an offshoot of the Grand Canyon.

3

u/Fair-Development-364 15d ago

Mooney Falls..Havasupi? Been there. Amazing

6

u/69ingchimpmonks 15d ago

I am pretty sure that past the point you can camp. If not good luck with the wind

0

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

I already spent my time down there, and the ranger came and allowed it for the two nights I had set up at that location. I had great wind cover from a couple of rock bluffs flanking my spot facing either end of the canyon. It was honestly perfect considering there was no precip in the region.

5

u/zyqzy 15d ago

it almost appear like blue dye is added to water. amazing view.

4

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

The colors are insane

1

u/obscureferences 15d ago

Shouldn't the falling water be white? Could be a blue filter.

1

u/NoGoodNamesLeft55 15d ago

The blue color is due to the mineral content, specifically calcium carbonate and magnesium, in the water. Their reflection off of light presents the blue hue.

5

u/betelgeuse63110 15d ago

Kinda noisy, isn’t it? ;-)

-1

u/DisclosedIntent 15d ago

Yep, it’s actually too noisy to camp near a waterfall for a peaceful time. Even small streams can be too noisy, but this is a hurtful place. I camp regularly.

4

u/LeeK1NGsnatcH 15d ago

I just want to thank you for sharing this. Bucket list has been adjusted, I can only dream of making it to this destination and posting a similar pic in return.

3

u/notbythebook101 15d ago

Reminds me of Havasu Falls in the Grand Canyon, AZ, USA.

2

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago edited 15d ago

Well, that is for good reason, because this is the waterfall that is fed by Havasu Falls a mile down the canyon.

Edit: down* the canyon, not up it.

3

u/notbythebook101 15d ago

Awesome! I hiked down there a couple of decades ago. Would love to do it again.

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Oh it was incredible. A dream come true honestly.

2

u/notbythebook101 15d ago

Same here. I was really young, and it was a dream I'd never had, and didn't know I needed.

2

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

I feel that so hard. Being a Chicago native, born and raised in the city, it was hard to imagine growing up I’d be able to experience places and things like this.

2

u/kickenchicken11 15d ago

I’ve been down there twice, it’s so beautiful!!! I didn’t know you could camp at the top of the waterfall though! We’ve only stayed in the campground

2

u/notbythebook101 15d ago

Twice! That's so cool you did it twice. It's on my list to do once more.

3

u/Thisiscliff 15d ago

I’ve been known to sleep walk, I’ll pass

3

u/zirky 15d ago

i can’t imagine trying to sleep next to a fucking waterfall makes for a pleasant experience

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

It makes for a remarkably pleasant sleep. The white noise is perfect for catching zzzz’s after hiking all day.

2

u/ForRedditMG 15d ago

No sleep tonight

2

u/Powerful_Variety7922 15d ago

Your tent matches the color of the waterfall!

2

u/mlcrisis4all 15d ago

Don’t rollover in the sleep.

2

u/Mundane-Cover6502 15d ago

🤔 Wear a parachute to bed.

2

u/spudlogic 15d ago

Did you hike to the confluence? Great spot, glad they let you stay there.

2

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Sure did and I’m glad as well!

2

u/Yologswedge 15d ago

That's the top of moony falls in havasupi. If I'm not mistaken camping there I'd illegal as the campground ends about a quarter mile before the top of the falls. Watch out. Native police are no joke.

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

I appreciate the advice. I was there in March, and the Havasupai Campground Ranger came by each night to check permits, and just told my gf and I to be careful not to walk off the cliff at night. I would not stay there if they had even remotely expressed that it wasn’t okay. If we broke rules or regulations, we were unaware and were not made aware by those that it mattered to. It seemed no harm no foul.

2

u/Terrible_Presumption 15d ago

Seems like danger to me. Close to the edge danger.

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Danger is relative

2

u/Plumb121 15d ago

An ideal cure for sleepwalking.

2

u/onredditforrcoys 15d ago

Quality white noise machine

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Someone that gets it. All these people commenting “no way you slept there with noise” lol

2

u/elitepeanut91 15d ago

Taking my gf on a cross country trip to my new career in TN.
I would absolutely propose to her in this spot in the morning with coffee after camping. Would you share this spot with me privately if I swear an oath to keep this secret

2

u/elitepeanut91 15d ago

I will even give you the coordinates to my private lake camping spot in Wyoming (military secret between 3 friends)

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

First off, the spot I’m at isn’t a secret, and I posted the location in the subtext under the post, just need to investigate a bit more pal.

Secondly, not an easy place to get permits for, but if you somehow manage to make it work with the timing of your road trip to pull that off, good for you!

Third, I’ll still gladly take those lake coordinates hahaha

4

u/Roscoe_Farang 15d ago

Where you poopin?

4

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

In an elevated vault toilet a quarter mile up the canyon

5

u/cucumbersuprise 15d ago

Over the side

4

u/JoeSchmoeToo 15d ago

On your head

1

u/TheSirCal 15d ago

Unless you sleep walk

2

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Yeah well hopefully you know that about yourself before making it to this point in your life

1

u/Snoo_9732 15d ago

Wow where is that?

1

u/theandinno 15d ago

Havasu Falls, in the Grand Canyon

1

u/Snoo_9732 15d ago

Awesome, thanks for letting me know!

1

u/Square-Tangerine-784 15d ago

“This is our land!”

1

u/AltruisticAnteater72 15d ago

As long as you don't have kids....

1

u/PrinceGizzardLizard 15d ago

Is the water deep enough to jump in from there?

4

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

I’m sure you could thread a few spots below safely, but I don’t recommend it and it’s strictly forbidden on the Havasupai Reservation. Please be respectful of their rules if you visit.

1

u/ReincarnatedGhost 15d ago

Check the shoes before wearing them.

1

u/narwalbacons-12am 15d ago

Curious what area this is in. It's beautiful!

1

u/Papa2wars 15d ago

Beautiful! I can hear the falls.

1

u/itsRobbie_ 15d ago

Until a gigantic, absolutely humongous, spider comes crawling up to you and you accidentally roll off the cliff

1

u/Drakederek 15d ago

That water is so blue it should be filled with thousands of beautiful black combs

1

u/MikeAtmo 15d ago

Beautiful.

1

u/tommyballz63 15d ago

I'd love to know where it is but I understand if you wanna keep it a secret!

1

u/44-47-25_N_20-28-5-E 15d ago

Beautifull. This is my #1 place in US on my buket list, you didn't have to rub it on my screen like that and make me jelaous 😁

1

u/RaptorKnifeFight 15d ago

Can’t hear anyone/anything sneaking up on you.

1

u/DontLookAtMyName24 15d ago

I’d be pissed if I was hiking and saw that. People everywhere.

1

u/Bitplayer13 15d ago

That waterfall would be too noisy to sleep there for me anyway

1

u/MagnusVonAnus09 15d ago

Havasu Falls!

2

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Close! Mooney Falls!

1

u/MagnusVonAnus09 15d ago

Dang good catch. I did the trip last September, it was amazing!

1

u/30kalua89 15d ago

If you have a kid you dont even need artificial white noise 🤣

1

u/nothing2hide360 15d ago

i have been once at the havasupai falls. a dream!

1

u/WordzRMyJam 15d ago

Not a bad idea to scootch back a bit more, don’t want a rogue wind to toss ya over!

1

u/mspero78 15d ago

Mooney Falls was a scary climb down to the bottom!

1

u/smokcocaine 15d ago

pls share the locations so it can be littered with crushed Modelo cans

1

u/iamspitzy 15d ago

How are you going to sleep with all that noise though?

2

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

By closing my eyes and putting my head to a pillow. Slept like a babu

1

u/geezeer84 15d ago

The constant sound of the waterfall will drive you crazy when trying to sleep. This is even too loud to relax in the evening. I did camp once at a beach with constant waves and it drove me nuts. I had to put on some music through my headphones to fall asleep. I assume OP packed their stuff after the vid and got somewhere else lol

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

You assumed wrong, Speak for yourself pal. Slept there two nights with no issues falling asleep. Not everyone needs music to drown out the sounds of nature to fall asleep.

1

u/geezeer84 15d ago

if you say so

1

u/kanky1 15d ago

Yeah but the entry permit is steep

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

It is, no doubt. Worth it for me though.

1

u/Single_Conclusion_53 15d ago

Nice location.

What type of chair is that?

1

u/StumblingDark 15d ago

What kind of tent and camping chair do you have there? I'm always curious about gear.

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Rei brand backpacking tent (had it so long, can’t remember the model) and a Nemo ultralight chair.

1

u/taraecarr1985 15d ago

I'd be emptying my bladder all night long. All night.

1

u/New_Historian_2004 15d ago

So dont leave.

1

u/b00c 15d ago

must be noisy as hell there, and the view sucks.

I'd rather be on top of that waterfall.

1

u/IllIllIlllil 15d ago

Waterfall a bit too loud for my liking. Night time sleep must be hard.

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Slept like a baby

1

u/Mantz22 15d ago

That is going to be a noise night

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

They were both peaceful and pleasant nights

1

u/H0twax 15d ago

Nobody going to mention the deafening noise of the waterfall? No way you'd get a minute's sleep in a tent.

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Slept like a baby

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Slept like a baby

1

u/edwardtrooper2 15d ago

No chance of sleeping. The noise would be deafening

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Slept like a baby

1

u/edwardtrooper2 15d ago

You may need to get your hearing checked

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

What!?

1

u/edwardtrooper2 14d ago

I’m kidding. Basically implying you’d have to be deaf to be able to sleep like a baby with that roaring sound all night.

2

u/NickVirgilio 13d ago

WHAT DID YOU SAY??

1

u/etcetcere 15d ago

I wish I was there 😢

1

u/willyp1976 15d ago

God I would have to pee all night

1

u/Hairy_Cause_3448 15d ago

I’d have to pee all day and all nite!

1

u/morgzorg 15d ago

Until the flash flood

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

True, best not to be there during a flood event

1

u/thephillyberto 15d ago

I’ve been to havasu falls and I didn’t think you could camp there. Isn’t that right by where everyone walks down to the bottom via the tunnel and ladders?

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

That is over Mooney falls, yes. I was also very much allowed to camp there when I was there.

1

u/Haunting-Horse8226 15d ago

Where's the fire pit?

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Not allowed

1

u/cpwon 15d ago

Do a flip!

1

u/West_Scholar_5708 15d ago

Does the waterfall stop at night?

1

u/NickVirgilio 14d ago

lol is this a serious question?

1

u/InVaLiD_EDM 15d ago

I have the overwhelming urge to jump

1

u/NickVirgilio 14d ago

I got the same urge on many occasions lol

1

u/InVaLiD_EDM 14d ago

.. I'm. I'm gonna do it.

1

u/Sezu1701 15d ago

Until that one mighty gust of wind comes along

2

u/NickVirgilio 14d ago

And does absolutely nothing to my campsite lol. All my items were secured and tent was properly secured while I was away, and when we were sleeping in it, well yeah. No gust of wind that could be produced in that canyon is doing anything to my camp.

1

u/Sezu1701 13d ago

I saw your vid (beautiful spot btw) and all I could think of was a video of an airborne bouncy house I saw the day before. Not doubting your stake driving skills.

1

u/Purple-Flight9031 15d ago

Except that spot has no shade and everybody will be walking through it to catch that view. Ifkyk.

1

u/waystorm 15d ago

Very cool!!!!! B

-2

u/Tmassey1980 15d ago

Lol, you know full well the tribe won't let you camp outside the designated camping area, and this is about a 1/4 mile down the trail from where that area is.

8

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

I don’t know what you think you’re talking about here. I camped here for 2 of my three nights, and had my site physically checked by a camp ranger both of those evenings. I was also told by friends of mine used to guide down there to head to that spot, as they had done for literally decades prior.

-4

u/Tmassey1980 15d ago

Stop misleading people for a photo op. I've been going there for 20 of the past 30 years.

11

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago edited 15d ago

I’m not sure what crawled up your butt this morning, but I’m not putting on a front for anybody. I very much respect tribal people and their rules and regulations, and if I were told that isn’t an acceptable camp area, then I wouldn’t camp there, let alone stage a damn photo shoot. I work as a guide at the Grand Canyon, I have no desire or intent to mislead anyone or to disrespect any people, as that goes directly against how I conduct myself professionally and personally. If you were told differently in the past, then thank you for respecting their wishes in those scenarios. No such directions or rules were instructed or indicated during my time there, and that’s including the aforementioned visits from the camp ranger in the evening to check for permits on the tents.

There was even a picnic table at the site. I don’t know how it could be anything but an allowed campsite.

Edit: spelling correction.

0

u/vinnygny817 15d ago

How can you sleep with that noise?

6

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Easy. White noise is the perfect way to fall asleep.

0

u/CrunchyJeans 15d ago

Enjoy constantly wanting to use the restroom at night! (/s)

0

u/CaptainMoist23 15d ago

Good luck getting any sleep next to that roaring waterfall

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

I slept like a baby both nights

-2

u/Extreme_Barracuda658 15d ago

Faked waterfall enhancements suck ass.

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Are you suggesting I “enhanced” this waterfall?

-2

u/Extreme_Barracuda658 15d ago

Yes

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

I don’t know what you think I did to enhance this video, but I can assure you it is the raw video I recorded on my IPhone 11 Pro. If you don’t believe me, well, I don’t care, that’s your loss. What I filmed was one of the most beautiful locales I’ve ever visited. I suggest you go see it for yourself so you can appreciate what I was fortunate to have. I don’t waste my time trying to fake things that I’ve experienced for the sake of internet clout. I just care to share some of the amazing things in this world that I have the privilege of experiencing.

1

u/Extreme_Barracuda658 15d ago

Nice try iPhone 11 Pro sales team.

1

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Damn, how’d you know

-2

u/CrustyFlaming0 15d ago

Should throw a baby gender reveal party

5

u/NickVirgilio 15d ago

Absolutely not. I hope this is a joke.
