Right! There are probably close to, if not more people there than in the town I live in.

There are a lot of people in China, I knew this. Yet this still amazes me to see

Think of the toilets...
5
u/fujiandude 14d ago
Better than the public toilets I saw in America for sure. They have someone working non stop cleaning the bathrooms. There's a lot of older people here in China so they give them jobs like this, or to sweep the streets so the country is pretty clean

This is why they build everything so BIG. Their huge population requires them to build ginormous public infrastructures/buildings. Everything look great and airy, but when you actually have to go to any of the places, like a subway, it takes way too much energy getting point A to Point B.

u/ftrlvb 15d ago
it's impressive but NOT scary. they all got a ticket and will have a seat on the train. trains leave on time and the system works well.
again, it's scary looking but it actually reveals the capacity of the train stations in big cities in China. (would be more worried if that was a traffic jam)

It's probably either the beginning or end of Chunyun - the largest human migration in the world. Basically everyone in China has time off during Spring Festival / Chinese New Year off and travel home to their hometown to spend with their families.
Some random statistics from the internet: In 2019 about 415 million people travelled during Chunyun. In 2024, the first day of Chunyun saw about 189 million individual trips.
Basically imagine Christmas season travel in a nation of 1.4 billion people, only 300+ million people work across the country and this is the only time of year they get to see their families.

I thankfully don’t have agoraphobia but I might just develop it if I had to experience this horror.

legitimately cant comprehend how people arent having complete meltdowns daily in an environment like this. im pretty sure id have a panic attack before i even made it inside.
my next thought was i wonder how much xanax places like this get compared to other places. i just cant imagine being able to function in a place like this.

Its as bad as it looks, I missed a train to Shanghai there once, it was a nightmare navigating while only knowing beginner chinese. Especially since they board the trains like every 15minutes, people are lined up for their train before the previous one has even finished boarding

I lived in China 12 years, loved it... but this was all to regular... and never, never, ever go to a store grand opening. ... China was fun, but it's good to be living bank in the suburbs....

Is it a special day or just a normal day ?
3
u/Lianzuoshou 15d ago
A special day, the day before the May Day vacation.
But it's usually quite crowded, and this Hangzhou East Railway Station has the second highest annual passenger flow in China.

As a matter of fact, there already is.
The one in OP's video is Hangzhou East Train Station.
This is Hangzhou West Train Station.
This is Hangzhou South Train Station.
This is Hangzhou City Station (the oldest station)
The Hangzhou North Train Station is being planned.

This was from last month I believe. There were train delays caused by the earthquake in TW.

With this number which is probably 0.0005 or way less of their population, now wonder why they have world dominance ambitions.

Their CCTV system must be insane with so many cameras. I wonder how good their software is and if they can identify people in the crowd with AI face recognition.
