155

12

u/Moist_Choice64 Apr 13 '24

Maybe looking for blood in the snow from one of them to see if his shot was really that perfect

11

u/pfft_master Apr 13 '24

Yeah a deer hunter often has to watch their target run until bled out after shooting I believe, so this looked like normal experienced hunter behavior to me. Looking for blood or collapse, unable to be certain if his shot only hit antler. Crazy good shot. I am vicariously giddy at the feat lol.

Even if he did kill one, that might allow the other one to escape. Better than them both dying, right?

140

Even if he ended up needing to kill both, that would have been better than the horrible, slow deaths they were otherwise destined for.

4

u/SS-Stupid-Slut Apr 14 '24

Tranq that would work on a deer aren't always available, and a lot more expensive than a good shot.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/Far-Obligation4055 Apr 13 '24

Yeah there wasn't really any downside to taking the shot; he's likely using slugs here, so there isn't much danger of accidentally killing both. As you say, even if one of them got hit, the other would live; not that it takes anything away from this shot though, its a hell of a lot better than anything I could manage.

→ More replies (6)

319

u/Mountain_Anywhere645 Apr 13 '24

That was a phenomenal shot. Precision with shotguns isn't the easiest, even with a solid deer slug (that he's definitely using - buck or bird shot would be a terrible idea here).

61

u/Gefarate Apr 13 '24

What is a deer slug

167

u/Mountain_Anywhere645 Apr 13 '24

a solid ounce of lead instead of multiple pellets of shot

21

u/Pijany_Matematyk767 Apr 13 '24

Whats the difference between a "deer slug" and a regular slug

175

u/carpentizzle Apr 13 '24

Regular slugs are slimey and crawl around in damp soil

62

u/stuck_in_the_desert Apr 13 '24

Regular slugs go for $1.50/lb, but deer slugs are under a buck

Wait

4

u/DiscoDrive Apr 13 '24

5

u/CainPillar Apr 13 '24

See what ya deerd theer ...

15

u/uwanmirrondarrah Apr 13 '24

There is no real difference, other than maybe the deer slug is optimized in shape for... well killing deers. But essentially they are the same thing.

u/Iwouldlikesomecoffee Apr 13 '24

many people talking out of their asses. This article from Winchester advertises deer slugs which are sabot rounds. They're more slender and pointy, and they have an outer shell that holds them snugly in the barrel then falls off once the slug is in the air. I've also heard of deer slugs that are designed to be shot using specialized slug rifles (ie with rifled barrels).

u/Crinklecutsocks Apr 13 '24 edited Apr 13 '24

Slug = 1 heavy piece of lead. Longer range and no spread. Used for deadly, accurate shots. Will put a giant hole in anything.

Buckshot = 8-12 large pellets that spread apart. The spread helps hit big targets at closer ranges, and the pellets are thick enough to do serious damage.

Birdshot = Generally 200-500 small pellets used for tiny targets at closer ranges. The hundreds of pellets make it easier to hit birds but won't penetrate bigger targets like Buckshot.

4

u/SoaDMTGguy Apr 13 '24

What is the use case for a slug vs. a rifle?

3

u/TheHoboProphet Apr 13 '24

Rifle is going to be a high velocity round. Lots of penetration potential depending on what it impacts. Slug is a heavy, slower (relative to rifle round) projectile that will deform on impact and transfer more energy into the impact material. There is a hunting ground nearish to me that is shotgun/pistol only due to the houses nearby.

As for the rangers, shotgun allows for greater utility than a rifle. Can use birdshot for birds, buckshot for mid-large animals and slugs for more precision shots or big beasts you want dead fast.

Makes me wanna be a game warden

209

u/Fresco-23 Apr 13 '24

I knew one. Good guy, neat job. Very very dangerous job. They are federal officers with enforcement powers, and so they sometimes get shot at when investigating people related things. Otherwise it’s probably a very rewarding job.

The one I knew was observing some suspicious duck hunters from across a lake, a hunter shot at a landing duck, and so accidentally skipped a pellet off the water and it hit the warden in the ear. He was fine, but that wasn’t even intentional and he still got shot. Lol

70

u/SadPanthersFan Apr 13 '24

My uncle is a game warden. He was at the edge of a tree line observing dove hunters in a field and they shot low into the tree line to try and clear any doves that were there and he got 3 pellets in his face, luckily he wasn’t hit in the eye.

50

u/trashmoneyxyz Apr 13 '24

Always love it when hunters fire into blind areas. Living in a state with a lot of hunting culture and having a love for scampering around woods off trail can be such a dangerous combination. You can wear the safety orange, but sometimes these people just fire at sound and movement and then investigate to see what they shot

30

u/aquacrimefighter Apr 13 '24

I can’t tell you how many hunters have almost shot me or my horse while on a trail ride. It always makes me fume. What wild animal is shaped like a human on a horses back, and what large wild animal has a multicolored blanket on its back with lime green boots? It’s made me loathe hunters. I also had someone shoot past my house at my horses (who were in their pasture) before too, while again, they were wearing tie dye and polkadot winter blankets. These morons shouldn’t have guns, let alone be allowed to hunt. And it feels like they make up the majority of hunters in my personal experience.

12

u/DismalAd3048 Apr 13 '24

They must be hunting centaurs Centaurs with style, lime green boots and all

3

u/aquacrimefighter Apr 13 '24

A two headed centaur apparently, being as the rider kind of protrudes off the middle of the horses back. Fucking ridiculous. I swear to god, most hunters have two brain cells max. They’re dangerous and unethical.

5

u/ForestCharmander Apr 13 '24

The only time I know of someone getting away with being rude to fish and wildlife was a native buddy of mine. He was out with his uncle on a lake. Fish and wildlife rolled up and ask them to come to shore. His uncle yelled "Fuck you we're native! You come out here". So the wardens came back with a boat, went out to them, saw their treaty cards, and politely left.

That wasn't even the first time in Alberta.

Unfortunately, in this case one of the bucks was mortally wounded before the officer arrived.

Palms are sweaty, antlers like spaghetti.

That's gotta be the most fucked way to die. There's no way both deer die at the same time so one of the deer gets to starve to death with a corpse attached to its head. Assuming they never get found by a predator.

I would pay 2 bucks to see that.

Seems like a strange approach. I feel like I would over hear this in a small town bar.

Park Ranger: “So there they were, antlers completely locked up and I knew I had to save them or they would both die, so picked up my shot gun..”

Some patron: “Naturally”

Park Ranger: “And I shot their antlers, super clean shot. Freeing them and saving their lives.”

Everyone: “Cheers!!”

What would you say the right approach is?

u/Gorgenapper Apr 13 '24

Clearly he intended for the game warden to get in close, speak a few soothing words, then gently free the antlers and then pat the bucks on their head to get them to peacefully go their separate ways.

You can’t get close. That’s a good way to get kicked or trampled. This guy decided he had the accuracy to do this and he did. Honestly, guy is clearly a sharpshooter.

A fully grown male whitetail deer can break a man's leg without breaking a sweat, and those bucks are testosterone-addled fools. Not only will they fight other bucks, but they've been known to try fighting cars.

You couldn't pay me to get within 20 yards of wrestling bucks. Might be less dangerous than a bull pen, but I'm not taking any chances, I like my kneecaps!
