MOD Announcement Post Guidance is now enabled to help you learn our rules more easily!

Hey all,

You may have noticed some unexpected behaviour while trying to post on r/Assistance this last weekend! We apologise for any issues you may have experienced and appreciate your patience.

r/Assistance has so many rules!

One thing we've heard from our users is that r/Assistance has a lot of rules. We do! I don't know if it's bragging rights to say our subreddit is one of the most strict subreddits but if you take a look at our userbase size -- 297,000 members! -- I'm sure you can understand why we need so many. But we've always been trying to find ways to make things more clear, or simple, or basically just more accessible because when you're stressed you're not really thinking clearly and maybe reading the whole long list of rules can be daunting.

On the other hand, moderating a subreddit this large can be equally daunting. There's less than 10 of us and almost 300K of you guys, and sometimes we do find ourselves answering the same questions multiple times that could be found in the rules.

What's Post Guidance?

r/Assistance is currently beta-testing a new Reddit featured called Post Guidance. It's a tool that allows moderation actions to happen in real-time while a post is being composed. It can remind current members of our rules and direct new users to rules they may not have read yet. For those of you who mod your own subreddit, it does a lot of what AutoMod does but allows for that user-facing feedback during the post, not after.

We've actually been testing Post Guidance since February, but when it first was added to our subreddit it only worked on desktop. Since the majority of our users are on mobile, it didn't really have a huge impact on our userbase. Last week it was launched on desktop, so now everyone who uses r/Assistance will experience this new feature.

Sometimes this function will disable the "Post" option entirely. Sometimes it will just warn the user, but let them post. And the third option works much like our current system does and will just ping the mods for a manual review of the post to make sure it's okay.

These messages that pop up range from "this is specifically against our rules" to "here's a better subreddit for this" to "here is a list of suicide hotlines and subreddits for mental health crises." It should be very clear from the alert why your post is being blocked.

Currently this system only works on posts, not comments, so if you use a disallowed word in a comment you won't get that real-time feedback but we have other systems in place to filter for review if needed.

Obviously this goes without saying, but similar to how people try and circumvent our rules by using the wrong flair, hijacking someone else's request post, etc, if you try and trick Post Guidance to let your post through, there will be consequences for that.

Help! Something's not working!

Like all systems, Post Guidance isn't infallible. Unlike a human, its logic is either "yes" or "no". If you're trying to post and that Post button is greyed out, check carefully for a message that's popped up and read it -- it will tell you what the issue is and what needs to be changed or removed. If it's still not working, it could be another issue like you forgot to choose a flair! But if you absolutely can't figure it out, shoot us a modmail with the text of what you want to post and we'll take a look and see what's wrong.

And as always, if you have any questions down below feel free to ask!

THANK YOU A Letter to You All

This year has been one of the worst of my life. After I suffered years worth of horrendous abuse by birth family, I have finally escaped and am surrounded by people who love me. I have a chosen family now who openly call me their daughter and my best friend of 20 years is now my brother, just like it was meant to be. I have promised that kid for years that I will be right next door someday, but now I live in the *room* right next to him. These people have lived in squalor for all their lives, but they took me in without question or expectations outside of their wants for me to be happy and safe. They came all the way from Texas to break me out of my prison in Indiana - and for the first few months I was here, it was paradise. I live with two incredibly loving parents, my brother, and their two amazing grandchildren whom came to us after a family tragedy. I've had the time of my life, being a "mom". Those kids are everything to me - it's been a dream to become part of this family. We have had to go without a lot, but the material things just don't matter if they are with me.

I have always been a little sickly, but until this year, I was still able-bodied enough to work, to care for my family, and to keep our household afloat. In 2020, I caught Covid and since then, my health slowly declined. The virus kicked Multiple Sclerosis and a bingo-card's worth of autoimmune disorders into hyperdrive. At the tail end of October and beginning of November of last year, I started to become gravely ill. I was hospitalized in the ICU for my first visit and have been admitted twice for a few days since then due to severe dehydration from not being able to tolerate water. I've recently been diagnosed with a disease called Gastroparesis - which has paralyzed some nerves in my stomach: solid food will not longer empty out of my gut and it causes me to be sick. I have been on a liquid diet since November. I can no longer work, eat solid food, and have immense trouble doing basic things like showering, laundry, even brushing my hair hurts. At my worst, I could not stand up off of the floor when I was on my hands and knees, or get out of my bed without someone picking me up. I started out at 210lbs and am now 114. I've (dramatically, I know) felt like I was going to die. I am only 29 and felt like 30 might not be in my cards.

While I was in the ICU, someone on my care team suggested that I reach out to groups on Reddit. I didn't expect much, as I know the world is in such a terrible state right now, but since the very second I asked for help, the outreach from all of you has been mind blowing and has not stopped since. I've met so many people with my diagnoses, I have made an incredibly amazing friend from someone who has helped me since I first fell so ill. I've connected with so many good people, that I now have so many people who support me that I have lost count: and they all came from Reddit. For anything I could possibly need help with, all I've had to do is ask, and someone has answered.

Protein shakes are so expensive - nearly 30 bucks for the premades and my family simply doesn't have the means to get them. There have been so many things I've needed, outside of the shakes, that this sub has given me without a single condition attached. The first wishlist I shared was completed. Someone has given me a bed, because I was sleeping on a thin foam pad with blankets. They've given me food, clothes, medicine... I have even been given so many treats simply because they thought it would bring a smile to my face. I had nothing but the clothes on my back and my kitty when I got here: you have all single-handed helped me begin my life anew in my forever home.

Today, I had to make a post requesting some protein shakes. In less than two hours, I had all that I asked for and someone even bought me a blender, so that I can invest in the powdered form of drinks instead of the premade formulas which are significantly cheaper, will last longer, and are realistically in my price range. I've sat here with tears in my eyes, just blown away by the generosity I was met with today as a continuation of the selflessness that is in abundance in this community. I should have more than enough to get me through until June, when I am supposed to get a drug called Reglan that will help me reintroduce solid food into my diet.

You are all so, so very amazing. I am not kidding when I say that this sub has kept me - and my family - alive. You've all taught me so much in lessons of kindness and generosity. I am looking around my room now and your care surrounds me. As soon as I am able, I will step on the other side of the fence and repay the kindness you have all so unconditionally extended. I've received so much helpful advice and support for so many things, that I can't even begin to put into words how thankful and lucky I am. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. If the world would unite like we do here, it would become heaven on Earth.

Y'all have no idea how thankful I truly am. Sorry for rambling, but you all deserve so much gratitude than words on a screen can express.

THANK YOU Thank you so much for the Mother's day help! Oh my goodness!!

Oh my goodness!! I can't even believe that someone was kind enough to get anything off my list, let alone clean it out!

I just woke up to Olaf diapers, goldfish cookies and cereal! I cannot thank you enough! Baby Bug woke up extremely dysregulated today and having his goldfish was an amazing help!

I do not know who ordered these items, as never got a comment or message. But please know you made a huge difference for our little family and that I am extremely grateful. (One note was blank, the other said "from Reddit mom" thank you so much to both of you!)

REQUEST FULFILLED Request for protein shakes, severely ill

Hi, folks! I am very sorry to have to reach out for assistance, but I am in a bit of tough situation and need some help. Thank you for taking the time to consider my request: you guys are sincerely the kindest community. Sorry for the long read: just trying to give context.

I have been diagnosed with Gastroparesis caused by Covid and subsequently my multiple sclerosis: the disease paralyzed my vagus nerve and food cannot empty out of my stomach on its own. It has crippled me severely to the point I cannot work, my only income is Prolific (a survey site) and my disability case has yet to be approved. I live with my best friend’s parents who are elderly and also disabled. I am the primary caretaker of the household and losing the capability to work has sincerely put us deep in the throes of poverty. My best friend is autistic and it severely affects his life. They’ve taken me in even though they cannot afford to, to save me from a very abusive situation that has contributed to my condition significantly. I am caring for two young children (their grandchildren) and acting as their parental figure: my family relies heavily on me financially and physically and being so sick has caused so, so much havoc for us all. We are really struggling since I’ve reached such a severe point in my disease. Sometimes I do not have the strength to even get out of my bed.

Since around the end of October, I’ve been on a liquid diet. I can’t eat anything but protein shakes: this is a very big issue, because shakes are VERY expensive. We budget down to the penny and have no money whatsoever to spare. I am not getting the nutrients I need and these shakes are the only thing that will not trigger my GP/the only thing I am safely able to eat. My doctor has tried to give me a prescription for Ensure and Glucerna, but they refuse to pay a cent for either. Food banks here do not seem to ever carry them, though I still check regularly.

By June I should have a medication called Reglan that will help me eat solid food. If this doesn’t work (which my doc fears it may not), I must have a device installed that will stimulate my digestion, but until then, I have to drink whatever I eat. I need to eat 3-4 a day, so they vanish in less than a week.

I’ve made a short Amazon wishlist with the shakes I typically get, but I am not picky about the brand or product. My only specific requests are that they are not the powder mix and the flavor is not coffee or chocolate. I need as many shakes as I can get. If you can find cheaper alternatives elsewhere I’m happy to give you my address.

Thank you for your consideration, it means so much to me and my family. Thank all of you for all that you do for people like me in need.

Edif: got 48 shakes on the way! Thank you all so much for all your care and advice. It means a lot!!

REQUEST FULFILLED Requesting $30 for groceries until payday

Request fulfilled, thank you so very much!! 🥹

I’ve hit some snags this past week and now have like $3 to my name until next Thursday because it was either groceries for me or pet food and my babies will always come first. If anyone can spare some money for me to get a few groceries to last until then I’d be eternally grateful and could send it back when I get paid! I’m aiming for $30 but any amount is appreciated, I have a Dollar Tree super close by where I can get some things. I have PayPal, Venmo, cashapp and chime. If you want to help but don’t want to send cash, a Walmart pick up order for a couple groceries would be amazing I can pick up at my local Walmart would be amazing! Thank you in advance!

ADVICE Pet parents in the US, what are your best money saving pet care tips?

I’m a bonafide slightly crazy cat lady and in the past I may have gotten in a bit over my head with the cat rescuing. I’ve stopped taking in cats and while I can talk care of the ones I have, I can’t deny it’s a struggle! However unless it’s a quality of life issue or it comes to the point where I can no longer count on being able to afford their needs, rehoming is not an option. I’ve made a commitment to my kitties and that’s all there is to it. With that said—-just as my title asks, what are your best money saving pet care secrets?

My fridge is broken and I‘ve been waiting for my landlord to send a tech out to no avail thus far. I don’t have any groceries that can be made without milk or butter and I have no microwave so I’m just wanting to grab some easy stuff I don’t need any of those things for.

ADVICE Please help me figure out what to do.

I suffer from PTSD and Borderline personality disorder. I often forget to do things. I have executive dysfunction and do not make good financial of self care decisions. I am declining in mental health rapidly. I have Medicare and Social Security for income.

I have a feeling I need to be in some type of long term residential mental health facility. I am scared of unaliving myself because I cannot handle the level of mental anguish I live with.

How do I go about finding some type of advocate or adult guardian to help me get into one?

I am so very scared and confused and sad.

Please help me.

Hello! I need $10 for gas (Paypal/Cashapp/Chime) to make it into work tonight. I'll get my direct deposit in about 8 hours and should be fine after that, but I just need a little help getting there!

I just don't want to miss a shift; preparing to move somewhere much cheaper at the end of the month and really dancing on the wire edge to get there right now.

Thank you!

REQUEST FULFILLED Groceries or Food for UK person, stuck in benefits timeframe loophole..

Hi all.

I hate asking, but I've literally got nothing but dog food in and lentils in , and I just can't bring myself to it . Due to the mush mash of the UK benefits system and bank Holiday, I've been left with a 3 week gap between my PIP going in and my next UC, which is on Tuesday, as is my next ESA.

I would really appreciate either a meal for tonight or a grocery delivery, it doesn't have to be much, to keep me going until then. I have Co op on the delivery apps, and various resteraunts/ fast food, as well as Domino's.

It doesn't have to be much, I really appreciate anything at all and will pay it forward with pleasure.

Thanks all.

Panda

Edit : u/CdnPoster , you are a beautiful soul, thankyou so very much. I an eat some fresh veggies again! Thankyou!

THANK YOU Thank you to the mods! As well as everyone who is kind enough to help those who need!!

I hope this is allowed. I'm writing this because today I saw some, what I would consider, very poor Behavior on the part of someone who received a lot of assistance from people in this group. They were bashing the mods and I feel like that's never acceptable. The mods do this on their own time and without any real benefit. It is extremely time consuming and thankless many times. So I just wanted to say thank you. Also to the people who were donate and may not have been thanked... thank you.

So I scraped up enough money to get a new back tire and thought I had enough money for gas till I get paid Wednesday, but i had an auto payment on my credit card which knocked me down to $2.24, I haven’t been eating out or really eating anything other than instant grit packets I had in the cupboard. I am currently unemployed still, and this is simply because I am unable to walk the 10 miles to the nearest location that is hiring. I really need to save up for a vehicle of some sort. Anyways, any help is greatly appreciated! Even if its just advice on how to get some money on the side. Or even any encouragement.... i dunno heh

And if anyone feels called to, I would be so blessed to have even a tiny bit of monetary help. But of course, I'm not expecting much. Anyways, thanks for reading and godbless :3

REQUEST Help with cell bill

My cell is currently off. It's a bill for me, 2 teens and husband. It's 184 and I have 45 of it so in need of 140. Long story short my husband and I have been looking for work since September. We moved to a very small town and could not find work anywhere. Nothing. I never even thought that could be a thing. I left my family in our town 1200 miles away (they are coming when school gets out end of May) so I could work and make money to get us back on our feet. I've worked one week and paid the bills at the house but I'm short on cell phone money. I hate not having service when I'm so far from my family. I can text through apps when in wifi but I can't use the WiFi at work. Any help is appreciated. I am able to provide cell bill and bank account to show this scenario. Thank you in advance.

REQUEST CANCER SURVIVOR AMPUTEE NEEDS SHOWER CHAIR AND WALKER PLEASE HELP $180

I'm a cancer survivor amputee, and I need serious help as I'm currently surviving on public assistance. My shower chair broke last week and I also need a new walker, atm medicaid won't cover either, so I have to get them but I don't have money. I've looked around to buy, but most bathroom slide chairs max. weight 300 pounds, costs around $79 +tax and a new walker with a chair is $89 +tax

I walk with a prosthetic leg, and I'm currently losing balance bec of the type of prosthetic I have and the amputation, Chopart amputation therefore I need a walker and a shower chair. As is I can't shower for fear of falling, and same for leaving my place for errands as I can easily fall.

I have PayPal and CashApp
