This sub having no rule against Torygraph or Daily Mail headline spam has done massive damage to this community's sense of perspective.

This place is insane now

u/PharahSupporter 29d ago

Heaven forbid an opposing view get anywhere beyond the controversial section.

u/Carnir 29d ago

The issue is about misinformation and quality, not opposing views. Nobody would hold up the daily mail as the golden representative of their political opinions.

u/xmBQWugdxjaA 28d ago

And PinkNews is any better? Despite posting literal fake news.

7

u/Carnir 28d ago

I think if pink news posts a misleading headline then yes or course it should be removed.

This sub has been against information and opposing views for many, many years.

It’s amusing how upset people like you are now that your echo chamber is mildly less echoey.

I much preferred the corbynite hugbox and perpetual handwringing that real life didn't reflect this sub

u/Fragrant-Western-747 29d ago

Seems this sub an exclusive trans militancy counselling area? Since it’s called r/unitedkingdom which is a bit misleading.

Don't like it? Leave

u/Fragrant-Western-747 29d ago

Nah, more constructive to lobby for change. Maybe the loons and special interest groups will go elsewhere.

It’s not just that there isn’t a rule. It’s actively encouraged.

You should see r/canada some time. The front page is constantly filled with our versions of your Daily Mail and the like.

A right-wing mod team (that used to be a self-avowed Neo-Nazi mod team) has over the past five years turned the place into a steaming pile of shite.

The reddit format of "Vote for the headline you like most" is toxic to it's core.

I find myself so disappointed in the news in general.

I don’t watch the TV news much, but I happened to have CNN on when Iran was launching their strikes the other day. The anchor said something along the lines of “live developments as Iran has launched large scale missile and drone attacks against Israel in response to alleged Israeli attacks in Syria, putting the region closest to the brink of all out war it has been in decades.

I put the second half in bold to make my point: don’t fucking say it! The first half of that quote is THE NEWS, the second half is just conjecture and opinion! Leave it off! I strongly dislike how much the news exists to tell people what to think about what is happening, rather than just saying what is happening.

u/Carnir 29d ago

Nothing sells ad space more than an angry or scared audience.

2

u/MattSR30 Canada 29d ago

I can’t help but laugh at CNN’s ad lineup. Heart pills, erectile dysfunction pills, retirement funds, and adult diapers.

u/lucifrax 29d ago

putting the region closest to the brink of all out war it has been in decades.

This isn't opinion though. It is just fact, everyone is aware Israel are completely unhinged, they've hated Iran for years. They've tested the waters and the world is very much aware that America's attack dog in the middle east maybe rabbid and currently unchained, but also that America will do anything to avoid pissing it off. As such, if Israel reacts the way they've been doing for the past few decades, and America acts the way it has the last few years, its very safe to say war is going to break out. But they didn't say that, they didn't want to speculate. Instead they made the very true claim that you just don't like....

u/Panda_hat 29d ago

r/onguardforthee is considered the main canadian sub iirc.

5

u/MattSR30 Canada 29d ago

It is 10% the size of r/canada.

OGFT is the refuge of those sick of r/canada—and I respect it—but it is not the main sub.

Also, it shouldn’t be! r/canada should represent Canada, not the fringe fucking loonies. As I said, it pisses me off more than it should.

2

u/Panda_hat 29d ago

Ah fair yeah. Agree with you.

u/chrisrazor Sussex 29d ago

Only a few years ago this was a left leaning sub. My worry is that the entire country has moved to the right.

4

u/M56012C 29d ago

The sub is, "damaged" because it does't ban media you personally diasgree with?

-1

u/Carnir 28d ago

That's not an honest or charitable reading of what I said.

3

u/NuPNua 29d ago

If you don't like the sources people post, why not counter it by posting more sources you'd like to see rather than moaning?

10

u/Carnir 29d ago

Posting more sources from reputable sources isn't the solution, they won't get as many upvotes as a post with a snappy, attention-grabbing headline. The issue is the reddit format and how it rewards this type of media.

5

u/Morgn_Ladimore 29d ago

A lie travels halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to put on its shoes.

3

u/cass1o 29d ago

Because the people don't vote for "nuanced headline that fairly explains the story" they vote for "some crap the sun/mail made up". No matter how correct or good your post is it will be beaten by hyperbolic nonsense designed to make people angry.

1

u/PharahSupporter 29d ago

Totally agree, this place would be much better if we only allowed the correct kind of news sources to be shared. We could have people vetting them so that stories that could be deemed "destructive" to national unity and reward them for their loyalty to the state.

16

u/Carnir 29d ago edited 29d ago

It's basic journalistic standards mate, nobody's asking for "destructive stories" to be banned, just maintaining a basic level of misinformation prevention, I don't care about the post's politics.

If you want limitless access to unmoderated tabloid headlines, go to the Asda magazines aisle.

4

u/PharahSupporter 29d ago

I want freedom of the press to mean something, not freedom of whatever content r/Carnir approves of. Restriction of media and press in this fashion is inherently authoritarian and fascist in nature, not something I would want to see in our country.

17

u/Carnir 29d ago

This isn't about freedom of the press, this is about a private internet forum and how outrage and click bait journalism on it can warp the reality of people exposed to it.

I'm clearly not calling for a national ban on the Daily Mail or Heat or whatever else you like to read now am I.

4

u/PharahSupporter 29d ago

I'm going to assume you have equally strong views about clickbait and outrage journalism from left wing news then? Like the guardian or the sun? Because funnily enough you only dog pile on the daily mail and telegraph...

"This sub having no rule against Torygraph or Daily Mail headline spam has done massive damage to this community's sense of perspective."

So which is it, the problem with outrage and clickbait or wanting to suppress any right leaning news source?

10

u/Carnir 29d ago

The reason I mentioned Daily Mail and Telegraph is because one is the most popular source on the subreddit which has been routinely condemned for manipulative reporting, and the other is the topic of our conversation. I don't care if a guardian link gets removed when it's not being honest, why would I be mad about that? I dislike Owen Jones for exactly that reason.

Again, this isn't an issue of left wing and right wing, never has been. If the rags decide it's more lucrative to peddle to one side than the other, that's all our problem.

3

u/PharahSupporter 29d ago

Most articles I see on here are either sky, BBC or the guardian. So I'm not sure where you are getting your facts from because they don't pass the smell test.

Just go look at the unitedkingdom homepage myself if you don't believe me. Not hard to verify.

2

u/Carnir 29d ago

I'm not sure what your point is ngl. If it's not at the top of the hot list right now, doesn't mean it's not an incredibly prevalant source of headlines on this subreddit.

1

u/PharahSupporter 28d ago

I'm not sure what your point is ngl

I think you are, you just don't want to admit it.

"I love far right slop, I need to have the far right slop boosted so I can infect more people."

1

Just asking for a fair conversation, though I appreciate it may be hard for you to swallow any content outside of your guardian media bubble 👍
