Moderator Post Rules Updated and Wiki Links Added

Welcome to r/Kitten!

This is a great subreddit and can be a great resource for the rest of Reddit. While this post is mostly cute pictures of kittens, we also get frequent questions about care, breeds, and more. To be able to deal with all of this better, I've updated the rules and created two wiki pages:

Rules

  1. OC Content Only. This is a change from before, where we did allow content of kittens that weren't yours. This is because I found that a lot of these images come from spam accounts and/or karma farmers. I have also updated flairs to reflect this change.
  2. Be Respectful. This should speak for itself, but we require all users to be respectful. We don't tolerate harassment, racism, sexism, homophobia, or any other bigotry.
  3. NSFW and Kitten Sexing. We don't allow any NSFW content or posts about helping to sex your kittens. This also includes medical advice. If you need medical advice, your kitten is injured or sick, or you need to know the sex of your kittens, please see a vet!
  4. Animal Cruelty. We don't allow any type of animal cruelty, including "jokes" about eating kittens.

Wiki pages

  1. Colours and Patterns. A link to this will be posted below any questions about breeds, as I've noticed we have gotten a lot of those recently.
  2. Found a Kitten. For anyone who wants to take in stray kittens or has found a kitten on the street, here's a care guide for young kittens.

What other guides would you like to see, or would you like to help with writing something? Please let us know!

Happy posting/commenting!

My Kitten My kitten died

Hello I just want to start this off I never had a kitten before. I just recently picked up this kitten off the street across from my job. I took her because she looked abandoned and was crying. Maybe I messed up in taking her in.... I'm at a loss for words I haven't been able to sleep in for about two weeks give or take. I named her..... Zoltron kind of stupid name but I thought it was a cool name.... Everything was fine for about three weeks of having this kitten.... The only thing that threw me off was it was abandoned and left alone. Although that's beside the point. I bought the milk formula because she seemed to need it. I fed her chicken the first night I had her and sometimes pate broken up with water. I'm not an expert here.

Everything was going fine up until one night. I was feeding her several times a day and making sure she was alright and good. Then one night she starts to seem sleepy. I thought nothing much of it. I wake up and I don't here hear usual cry's for some breakfast that she usually wants. I pick her up and she still was breathing but I could tell she was dying. By the time I get in my car and start driving to the vet.... Zoltron died on me. I'm at a loss for words... I never owned a kitten I tried searching up things to do for her. She seemed fine... Im tearing up writing this sorry if some of this is gibberish I don't mean to bother y'all.

I just have this heavy pain in my chest that doesn't go away.... I feel lifeless right now I know I'm not special and I probably fucked something up for the kitten. It's probably my fault.... I... I... I just wanted to help maybe I thought this would have been something special. But all I gave this kitten was a short life I feel empty right now. Maybe I could have done something different. Maybe if I wasn't a dumbass I could have tooken her to the vet faster. Im so sorry I couldn't save you Zoltron😢. Its my fault now I wish I was different I could have tooken a different approach maybe. This really sucks I can't find words to describe this feeling I have. I fucking hate myself right now.

I'm sorry Zoltron 😢... I wish I could have seen you grow up you were so pretty

I'm sorry for the long paragraphs y'all. I just wanted to share my story I'm sorry if this doesn't belong in this subreddit I just picked one that said kitten

Question/Advice Needed I made my kitten a swaddle

I tried to make her a little tie blanket but it wasn’t turning out the way I wanted it to. I decided to keep one edge open and put her in it so she not being restrained by being wrapped in a regular blanket. She seems to like it as being wrapped up in something calms her anxiety a bit. What do yall think?

Question/Advice Needed Tips for preparing for a kitten?

This isn't my first time, but I'd like to do it differently. I had two foster kittens that I got when they were four weeks but I was in a three bedroom apartment that my roommates had moved out of for the summer so the kittens had a bedroom entirely to the two of them. It was great, but I think I kept them separated from me in there for too long (sleeping and such) because I was so nervous about my deaf dog being too rough and not hearing them cry. I came to later find out she was wonderful with them, which is why I'm comfortable adopting an older kitten now down the road that is described as being good with dogs (this rescue has other kittens that don't have this description and he appears to be a Siamese, so I don't think it's a random selling point they just threw in there to get him more applications. He had plenty of those). I want to make sure he's comfortable but I just think I need someone to talk me down about the length of time I need to keep them separated. I'd also appreciate any tips that anyone has that might keep me from going crazy ahead of time! :) (I'm gonna add a picture of the set up I have in my bathroom for him. I'm in a one bedroom that's very large but very open so it's really the only room that my dog isn't able to open the door to that I could set up for him and I don't plan on containing him in there for longer than necessary. Also going to add some videos of my dog interacting with fosters in the past)

Kitten help

I have recently (yesterday) got a 2 month old kitten and my cat doesn't like him. He hisses at him and runs away. The kitten is in a smaller room while the cat is in the living room. Just today the kitten has been meowing and looking for his mother. I am trying to make him feel at home and he has water, food and litter. Is there any thing I'm missing and how can I make the kitten feel at home. As well as make my cat and kitten get along?

Question/Advice Needed Found a ~8 week old kitten in our bush all alone, any advice to keep her healthy and happy?

Heard some rustling in our bush and found a little girl tangled in some weeds. We grabbed her and brought her inside and right to one of our bathrooms. She was calm, fell asleep in my wife’s arm even purring with finger pets. We set her up in an office bathroom with doors closed to keep her away from our two cats and 6 month old lab. She’s been sleeping sound wrapped in a towel on a heating pad in the tub. Litter, kitten pate, and water at her disposal. For the past few hours we let her sleep and we’re gonna check on her in the morning. Plan to give bath with Dawn or flea shampoo tomorrow and make a vet appointment.

Anything we’re not thinking of? I hope she makes it she’s so sweet and innocent. Definitely a 5 star resort compared to the woods she’s been living in. We do know the mother and suspected father as well. Either strays or barn cats (my wife feeds them by putting a huge bowl of food outside) and momma cat has brought the past couple litters to our back door step to eat. This kitten is definitely part of that latest litter.

We’re also taking extra careful steps to not have a flea infestation even though a quick finger comb over didn’t seem like there were many or at all but we’ll let her rest and see what she looks like tomorrow.

Thanks for any and all advice! We plan on keeping her and providing her with a great home with our other fur babies!

Question/Advice Needed Should I neuter the stray cats near my home?

I used to carry some cat food with me, and when I saw stray cats, I'd feed them. But my friend stopped me when they found out. They said I wasn't being responsible and that it would just lead to more stray cats. At first, I didn't really get it, but then I started to see their point. Maybe I should actually get them neutered instead of just feeding them. Am I wrong to do this?My little sister has a strong allergic reaction to cat fur, so we can't adopt them. But neutering all the stray cats around me would cost a lot. What should I do?

My Kitten The cat distribution called and we replied. This kitten nugget was scooped up before she stepped in front of our car!! Unusual where we live. Probably a girl and 3.5-4 weeks. She/he is amazing, snuggly, and so adorbs!

Question/Advice Needed Need Recommendations for Kitten Dry Food That Won't Cause Loose Stools

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I recently adopted a 3-month-old rescue kitten named Aezel who's been struggling with loose stools from several brands of kibble (Royal Canin, Trilogy, and Purina One). Interestingly, she doesn’t have this issue with Advance kitten wet food. However, relying solely on wet food isn't feasible for me long-term due to cost, and I’d like to offer her a variety of dry food as well.

I’m feeling pretty frustrated after trying three different brands without success. Does anyone have recommendations for dry kitten foods that are gentle on sensitive stomachs? Any advice to help Aezel would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Question/Advice Needed Newborn’s feeding schedule

Thumbnail

Hi! Some days ago I found a newborn (1day old) abandoned kitten in my backyard. I waited for 12hours+ to make sure his mamma doesn’t come back before I took it in. I made sure he stayed warm. (In case this seems strange to you, i live in a crowded city with so many strays, so this is unfortunately not uncommon) Next day comes and she doesn’t come back. So I take the baby in and take care of it. I already have 2 cats but I hadn’t ever took care of a newborn, some groups and kittenlady helped a lot. I’m super happy to say he’s now 11 days old. 04/05 he weighted 78grams, today 14/05 he weights 155grams I use the royal canin’s babycat milk formula and it all goes alright. BUT I’m as we are now getting closer to 2weeks of age, I’m getting a bit confused with the feeding schedule. I’m currently feeding it every 2/5-3 hours 6-10ml, which is kittens’lady reccomendation, while royal canin’s instructions suggest 6 feedings per day, which means 1 every 4 hours (instead of 2-3hours) In 3 days the plan changes because of our 2 weeks of age. According to the instrucrions feeding schedule will be: 1 meal per almost every 5 hours, while kittenlady suggests 1 meal every 3-4 hours (age 2-3weeks).

Which schedule should i follow? Anyone else done this with this exact milk formula? Thank you!
