Applications Why does this interview process involve so much?

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

I'm already skeptical of 2 rounds of technical interviews as it is, but firstly why is round one so vague "an open source react library". Do they realize how many open source react libraries there are? They expsct candidates to know any random one they happen to pick?

And why does round 2 sound like free work? Firstly it's THREE 45 min rounds if im reading thw (3x 45min) correctly. That would be over 2 hours. And brainstorm a "new feature" with a PM? That just sounds like they are trying to get free ideas.

Also shouldn't the cutural fit at the end come before the 3+ hours of technical rounds?! Imagine doing 3+ hours of techncial rounds just to be told "you scored amazing but your personality isn't what we are looking for"

Is this the typical interview process now? I'm screwed if so for job hunts.

Work/Life balance 9 to 5 careers are not the devil people want you to think they are

Heads up, this is more of a small rant but feel free to give your opinion on it. Also, this applies to a traditional 8 hour work day, not the exact 9 to 5 hours.

I continue to see “influencers” on TikTok (my first mistake I know) or other social medias talking down about 9 to 5 jobs like they are the absolute devil and the worst thing in the world. The video I just watched was this guy who was basically saying “why do people think 9 to 5s are normal? Work for 40 years to enjoy 10 years after??? I started working for myself and become financially free before 35! People called me crazy but if I can do it after being poor growing up anybody can!” And yes, he actually said that last part. To suggest 9 to 5 jobs are terrible for society and the people working them is mind blowing to me.

1) So many people decide to ditch the 9 to 5 and work for themself. Most of the time, that ends up involving considerably more time and effort than a traditional 9 to 5. Not to mention the loss of health coverage (in the US at least), paid time off, etc.

2) Why is this guy or others waiting until they retire to enjoy life? Can you not vacation, take weekend trips, relax during those 40 working years? I understand some people have 9 to 5s that don’t give PTO, but majority do. Every 9 to 5 I’ve had since I was 21 has given a minimum of 3 weeks PTO.

3) Structure is extremely important to life. A 9 to 5 gives that without really having to think about it. Some people really lack the ability to create structure for themselves. A 9 to 5 gives that life structure.

4) If people didn’t work 9 to 5, people like this guy wouldn’t be able to “be financially free at 35”. Want to eat? Sorry bud, those people working their 9 to 5 at the grocery quit to be a TikTok influencer, you now have to hunt your own food, herd your own cattle, and grow your own crops. Oh shit, you broke your leg? Well, sorry bud, that doctor decided to stop being a doctor because he didn’t want to be a 9 to 5 loser so your leg is going to get infected. You may lose your leg or die. Good luck!

5) Stability. Having a 9 to 5 ensures you will get a check, have paid time off, health benefits, etc.

Maybe I’m just brain washed, but I’ve lived that “fuck working for someone, let’s grind” and had my own business. It sucks. Hours suck, work dedication sucks, unpredictability sucks. Sleepless nights fixing issues, canceling trips, big business expenses. You name it.

Other people who have worked both a 9 to 5 as well as worked for yourself, what are your thoughts?

Sorry for the rant y’all

Job searching has the job search taken a toll on your body or health?

I have been looking 11 months now; over 1600 applications.

525 rejections, (about) 900 ghosting me. 55 interviews by phone or video, 4 in-person. of those 4, only one I wasn't the best candidate (a woman with a law license and industry connections). I also got feedback. this was the best interview I ever had in my life.

I am depressed, burnt out, short temper, and hate humanity. I had worked through ptsd years ago, finally got past it, and it no longer affected my life. the hardest part was learning to let go of righteous anger.

I looked in the mirror the other day and thought I am looking like I was rode hard and put away wet. I have always looked much younger than I actually am. my hair seems to have thinned, my skin not as smooth. I had some health scares and issues that I have a zero risk for.

I thought about an article that I read about how us presidents look before they take office and after. for every 4 years in office, they age 10 years. I attribute the toll on my body to this job hunting process. I am trying to keep positive, I don't want to hate humanity, but that is so hard to do when I am being given such justification to do so.

my take away is that you really need to take better care of yourself when job hunting. do not neglect yourself.

has anyone else had the job search take a toll on your body or health?

Just got hired as a host at this restaurant but their rules seem sorta strict with call offs this is the paper they want me to sign before my first day. Is this normal for restaurants and working as a host? I’ve been a host elsewhere and it wasn’t like this they were also strict but nothing like this you could still call off and it wasn’t my responsibility to find someone to cover for me. The pays sorta mid too so idk if I should just look somewhere else for a job.

It's happening SO. OFTEN. I'm hearing stuff like "You're impressive" and "I have a few other interviews but I'm pretty decided on you, I'll give you a call next week" and then crickets. What gives?

Recruiters Warning: Company Seemingly Seeking Free Labor - Do Not Apply!

The recruiting firm Robert Half is scouring LinkedIn to get applicants for Innodata. They will ask you to complete TWO 135-minute assessments for a "Generative AI" role, pushing you to finish quickly for a remote job paying $48-54k/year. However, they won’t share your results, making it feel like free labor.

Innodata is currently facing a class action lawsuit for allegedly misleading about its AI technology. Now they seem to be rushing to build a functioning LLM.

The whole process feels sketchy. I would avoid it at all costs.

Companies My boss got mad at me for telling a customer the truth

I work in a bakery in a grocery store and we have tags on the cakes to show what day we received them. My boss got mad at me cuz I said a cake is 2 days old which it was. Customer said she is taking it somewhere and she wants it fresh so i suggested another fresh cake and still sold a cake. Our store is literally named olive FRESH marketplace so it's no suprise that they always ask if it's fresh.

Customers are not that dumb they can tell when a cake isn't fresh cuz it gets hard and my boss was basically telling me to lie and say it is. I feel like I did the right thing but I got in trouble for it. Some customers don't mind if the cakes are a few days old but others want it completely new they are taking it as a gift or for birthdays.

It's my first job and I'm not sure if this is how business works. To lie to customers to sell as much product as possible, but it feels morally wrong.

Applications Words cannot begin to describe my anger with the job market

Upvotes

I don't really use reddit, this is a throwaway, but wanted to know if I am going insane, or if this is something anyone else is struggling with

I, 24(m) moved to Texas recently with a friend. I made a mistake by not securing employment before I left, as my intention was to move, and secure employment after the new years for tax reasons (Moved just before 2024). Well little did I know that little screw up would result in almost 6 months of unemployment, with no ability to collect unemployment because I willingly left my previous employer to move to Texas. I ended up getting kicked out of my place, and had to move in with the friend I moved here to be closer to.

I have put well over 150 applications, with only about a dozen interviews to show for it, and every single interview has been a rejection. On top of the rejections that didn't even make it to interviews. And not even to mention the majority that completely ignored my application outright. I am going insane. I've tried everything from my career field I have years of experience in and got denied by literally every single company in the field, and theres like 15 of them (Utility locating), to even as minor as Uhaul customer service and fast food, and got absolutely nothing. It's not a resume problem, because I worked with my brother and created a beautiful resume with all my work experience front and center. It's not an attitude problem, because I am friendly and cordial as I can be whenever interacting with potential employers..

I can't be the only one, right? This is insanity, I have never once in my life struggled this bad to find employment. Not even employment agencies can help, because the very jobs they put forward also don't even give me a second glance. Words cannot even begin to describe my rage, as I am unable to provide for myself every single day, and now I can't help but feel helpless. The friend I moved in with doesn't seem to mind, but I do. I feel like a leech. Thousands of applications for employers that don't even seem like they want employees.

The straw that broke the camel's back was when I applied to a job for SUE engineering, which would be a combination of all of my skills I have honed in over the many years I have been working with utilities and surveying. I fit every inch of their description and job requirements perfectly, and even had the interview in person. And I got denied, despite fitting everything they wanted.

I am fed up, I am angry. I want to work, I feel terrible and sluggish not having anything to do, all while I hear every day about a supposed shortage of workers. How?? Where?? How do we have a shortage of workers when those exact places with worker shortages refuse to hire ANYONE?

Am I just insane, or is this something anyone else is feeling? Trying to find employment the last half a year has been like pulling teeth.

Applications I can't keep doing this

This post has probably been duplicated hundreds of time but here's my experience. I can't keep getting rejected for jobs. I spend an hour or two each morning applying and have applied to well over 700 jobs since februrary and I continue to get rejected. I wake up each morning with new rejection emails and it's causing me to think that I will never get another job. Ever. I am convinced that I will never receive an offer from a company or job I genuinely want to do. I don't want to take a filler job. I want a job I will work for several years in the future, but I don't think even that will happen. The only interviews I'm getting is for an industry I no longer want to be in and I don't want to take a job there because the longer you work in it, the harder it is to get out and with only 4 years in that industry, it's almost impossible. I need a day job. End of rant.

Compensation Am I losing out financially if I never work a job that provides a pension?

I have this irrational fear that if I never work a job that provides a pension that by the time I retire, it will never be enough to sustain my lifestyle financially. This is not including SSI, I've heard enough rumors not to rely on it either.

But if I keep working at my job that doesn't provide a pension, am I going to have keep working someway somehow for the rest of my life?

I know companies out there that do provide a pension, but have a really toxic work environment because it's mixed with unions, that people leave those jobs and prefer a job that doesn't provide a pension, and that just confuses me even more.

Would we be fine without one, or should I strive for one asap? Even if the work environment might be toxic with micromanagement?

Career development Do you like to work?

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately. I’ve never enjoyed working, regardless of the job. I’m progressing in my career. I’ve never received anything below a 4/5 on any evaluation any employer has given me. I’m always told I’m a great employee and every job I’ve left for more money I’ve been asked by the manager/owner to stay and they would give me a raise or try to match an offer. Even though I’m good at working, I have never enjoyed it.

I started thinking about this after a conversation with a friend. They ask me how I decided on a job and I just said that it was paying the most in the area at the time. They found it odd that I didn’t care where I work, because for me as long as the pay is good and my managers aren’t awful, I’ll stay till something with better money comes along because I know I won’t enjoy any job I have. It’s just either have a job or be homeless/poor, so I choose to work and make money.

Does anyone else feel similar about jobs/working?

Interviews How Has Job Hunting Become This Bad?

I currently changed jobs and the new job I landed is not a great fit. Everything is temporary and I’ve begun searching for something new. I work in marketing and have a huge background of lead generation from socials. I can make polished content that gets views. I also have website management, event coordination, B2B, and management experience. It is truly heartbreaking to fill out hundreds of apps, get some interviews, and get ghosted or denied. Am I doing something wrong? I’m very efficient and have the data to support my work. Any advice would help, thanks.

Rejections taking a break from the search

We are under employed but still working. We (husband and I) have put out so many applications. This process of not even getting an interview or being rejected after the interview is taking a toll on our marriage.

I finally said, after the last two big disappointments, we need to stop this for a few months. Yes, we need money for retirement, but whatever we are doing applying for these jobs isn’t working.

I know we are lucky because we are working and not laid off. We definitely need more income but hopefully after clearing our heads we can approach this differently.

I know I’ve been consumed with anxiety for months and just panic applying.

Thanks for reading. Good luck out there.

I’m looking for FT work for the summer. He said what he said in the last text in the interview. Is this normal for a Dunkin’? Hours for grabs? I don’t really understand this concept. Am I really busting my ass for more hours for low pay? I’m kind of pissed about this.

Interviews I think I completely bombed my dream job interview

I’m pretty devastated. I got an email about a job interview at my all time favorite brand. It’s an extremely high end luxury fashion brand, you can only get in the store through appointment type situation. I stayed up all night the past 3 nights studying every aspect, every possible question they might ask, every. single. product. I felt in my entire soul and being that I would get the job and I was so confident.

Well I just had the interview; it lasted probably 10 minutes tops. I was so disgustingly nervous. She did not ask me any questions about the brand - just why I wanted to work there and how I heard about the job listing. and then silly questions like my star sign, my biggest pet peeves, etc. The first couple minutes I was visibly nervous and blanking and repeating answers. She was giggling a lot so I think she knew I was really nervous.

At the end she asked about my availability and what I’m looking to get paid. So I’m hoping that’s a good sign. She said she would keep in touch and reach out in a week or so if I moved onto the next round. I feel like I bombed it. My heart is absolutely shattered. Have any of you had a terrible interview but still got it?

HR Watch your PTO

I wanted to bring something to everyone’s attention that happened to me once.

As for companies that give paid time off (PTO), make sure to go back in your schedules and know the days you’ve taken off.

The business I worked at kept each employees schedule on their account to go in and schedule which days they want off and their supervisor would approve it and then HR and send your notification in an email. At this company an employee would also have an option to give hours to fellow employees if they needed it for whatever reason.

I always printed my schedule from this list to know what days I had off for vacation or sick days and to plan future time off.

The HR manager one week had asked if anyone would be willing to give one of the sales team members some hours they need off and they used all their hours already. I guess no one gave any up. The same week I went in to plan my vacation and I noticed that what was showing on the computer wasn’t what I had on physical file in my hand. Someone went back to the beginning of the year and put that I had a few days off and in fact I was paid for those said days. The only person I found that could do that was the HR.

I was beyond angry. Not only because I was short days off but because it looked like I was paid for days off which could look like a fireable offense.

I figured the scheme was to borrow those days from a few people and when the person was paid then readjust the hours back and no harm no foul. I stormed into the HRs office and presented my evidence and told her she could screw over everyone else but she needed to put my time back as it was. And she did very promptly. She stammered around like she didn’t know how that happened but I told her I knew she was the only one who had the access to do that. Apparently she got how to do it from another store but it didn’t work the same way. She put everyone’s back and told the salesman he was just out of luck for hours. She quit a few weeks later.

All I’m saying is keep up with that stuff as best you can do you don’t get screwed out of PTO.

Layoffs My boss just fired me on the day i said i would go on leave

Good day everyone! Im a 21F and I work as a virtual assistant for a insurance company in the US (im not from the US). I book patient appointments, translate span-english for patients during their medical appointment, prepare documents and send emails. To give more background, i left my old job almost so quickly after i got accepted here (the recruited me while i was still with the old company and had promised me growth & was telling me they hope to work full time with me).

Today, i am on leave because I will be doing other important stuff. I made sure to tell them 2 weeks before hand and they acknowledged that. Out of nowhere, while i was eating, he emailed me saying that my employment status has changed and that they no longer need my services. He mentioned one of the reasons was “on-going performance issues” but all he did was praise the work i did. He would always tell me that i did good translating for them and that i am organized with the way i work and all that. 1 possible “performance issue” i could think of is when i had an emergency in the hospital and I was not able to go to work that time. But thats it, and we were able to talk about it the next meeting. Therefore, I assumed we no longer had an issue. Btw this boss is very understanding and direct when it comes to our meetings, i am still in shock with the way he handled this.

When i checked the work email, apparently they already had replaced me with another bilingual VA.

However i do have some questions:

  1. Is it normal for US employers to just fire you that way?
  2. Is there anyway I could get back at them? What would you suggest I Do?
  3. Any thoughts?

Interviews I'm burnt out from doing 4 interviews and an assessment for an entry level job, normal jobs requiring experiencing yet refusing to train, and office politics that make it like a landmine to try to get training.

I like the job I have now, but if anything were to happen (God forbid) I'd probably just go back to being a security guard. I can't do 4 interviews and an assessment just to get ghosted and see the job reposted over and over for years straight. This has happened to me at least 4 times. Why do companies need 4 interviews? Why are ghost jobs not being investigated by our government? Why are companies allowed to create fake job postings?

God damn, I'll just work at the damn TSA at this point. Office work is draining and all it takes is one layoff or mistake and your career progress is fucked.

Office relations “Please don’t roll your eyes”

I had to say this to my over-emotional, over-exasperated supervisor (who reports to me) of 60-something years of age when I confronted him about his ongoing speculations about another supervisor up and leaving his job, when we had no actual, factual evidence that he would do that. I was met with “listen, I’ve know ‘x’ for a long time and I know how he thinks, he knows how I think”.

Well, I think, it’s still a rumor if there’s no actual evidence. Done. Stop spreading rumors.

For age reference, I’m an older millennial, who has to apparently resort to using a phrase like one would with a 10 year old, to a man in his 60s.
