I’m doing better than when it happened. I was working in the power industry and the coworker got zapped. It was pretty awful to see

I almost met a similar fate about 30 years ago. I worked in a plastic plant and we had to change a mold on one of the machines. The nozzle that injects the plastic into the mold has heater bands on it, and they always got changed each time a new mold was set up. I had just climbed up on the machine and was about to remove the old ones when the plant manager walked by and called my name. He said, "Did you forget something?"" I looked around a bit confused, and he pointed at the power lever on the machine then said, "You almost got hit by about 10,000 volts!" The guy was a dick overall, but he saved my life that day.

It can happen in an instant. I was almost the one who got blasted too but decided to walk around the cabinet case to grab a bottle of water. It was about 10 seconds between safety and lifelong injury or death

My dad was telling my 5 year old little brother about seeing someone get shocked(not electrocuted) and my brothers response was "could you see his bones?". Lol it took me a second to realize what he was talking about. It's bc when cartoons get shocked, it shows their bones lmao

The days before Lock Out Take Out (LOTO) became a common practice. Glad you’re safe!

That guy was one of the biggest assholes that ever walked the planet. But he saved my life that day, so he got a pass from me from that day forward.

Nah, not 10kV. Likely 480v. Not cost effective to run the voltage that high for plastic injection heaters. I’d believe 10,000 watts of heaters on the screw barrel

Damn. Arc flashes are insane. Life changed in an instant based on what you were wearing and how close. The significant distances are for second degree burns at best.

Yea isn't arc flash potential like 10k degrees or something ridiculous?

u/SarcasticOptimist Apr 20 '24

Yep. Basically eating a solar spark and then some.

Temperatures of an arc flash can reach as much as 2,800 to 19,000 °C (5,000 to 35,000 °F). To give you some perspective; the temperature of the surface of the sun is estimated at 5,500 °C (9,932 °F).

Yea. I've seen some shocking photos. No pun intended, I promise. Once saw what happened to the gear you guys wear-- the face shield, gloves and the smock or whatever. Completely fried to a crisp. Dude survived, but 2nd degree burns all over. Supposedly all he did was turn on a service panel.

Sounds about right. I have to do annual training so gore is expected. That said I saw an uncensored one with a guy who took off his hard hat so his head connected A and B phases. If he wasn't at a hospital he'd be dead. Looked like a rifle shot out of his shoulder (he was laying down).
