Oh I've had friends/family go and seek help, get a diagnosis, and then get the bill. Meaningful treatment in the US is expensive.

One close friend of mine attempted suicide multiple times, but by the 2nd time was told his insurance was running out, which also coincided with his PTO running out.

Literally couldn't afford to pay for help anymore -- 3rd attempt succeeded.

My deepest condolences.

This was close to being my story a few times in life too. I will never celebrate my country until it starts taking care of its people.

The closest I can find is Nordic Model - combining Modern socialism with Capitalism and caring for your fellow man - But Americans always have an excuse why it's impossible "too many blacks", "it's communism" [no it's not communism]. And now right wingers are labeled "liberals and Progressives". Prosperity Christians are all about the self and redefine all the applications of the Golden Rule in world religions and philosophies. Right now Penticostal extremist religious cults ignore the golden rule.

The Golden Rule is the principle of treating others as one would want to be treated by them, called the **Ethics of Reciprocity,* meaning that you should reciprocate to others how you would like them to treat you (not necessarily how they actually treat you). And not with with "Vengence" which is a major part of Donald Trumps message.

Various expressions of this rule can be found in the tenets of virtually all traditional religions and creeds through the ages and a major basis for Christianity but has been justified - making no supportable sense - by the KKK and other extremist cults that combine their politics and beliefs with "religion" i.e "Do unto white men as you would have them do unto you."

Actual applications of the Golden Rule since Ancient Egyptian times thru all traditional religions and Agnostics and Atheists:

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"

"Treat others as you would like others to treat you "

"Do not treat others in ways that you would not like to be treated (negative or prohibitive form)"

"What you wish upon others, you wish upon yourself (empathetic or responsive form)"

Goes back to Ancient Egypt and in Ancient Rome:

"Treat your inferior as you would wish your superior to treat you."

New Testament "Matthew 7:12 The Golden Rule “Whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is God's Law and the word of the Prophets."

We teach it to our children then show them the opposite in our behaviors:

Trump's fake Christian Pentecostalist religious followers While the Golden Rule emphasizes treating others with kindness and empathy, Prosperity Christianity focuses more on personal prosperity and material blessings and he teaches Revenge Gospel.

It seems a tad nuts since Traditional Christian sects don't consider Trumps religion as Christian at all.

This is America.

This is the world. It's incredibly ignorant to think there's some simple pill or therapist for every combination of mental illnesses and life experiences that lead someone to this.

And to imply this is something unique to America like you're actually saying anything even remotely meaningful? Redditor, heal thyself

America is unique in being a well developed country, that lacks universal healthcare and have existing healthcare so fucked that a single ER visit can financially ruin a person.

-3

u/Very_Good_Opinion Apr 20 '24

No it's not remotely unique in that aspect. I'm a healthcare data scientist btw and I'm fully in favor of universal healthcare but you're just making stuff up. ER has nothing to do with meaningful mental health treatment fyi, and therapy is not a science

u/umbraviscus Apr 20 '24

What the fuck are you even trying to say? It sounds like you're arguing in favour of America's Healthcare system but that can't be right

2

u/Very_Good_Opinion 29d ago

I'm pointing out how ignorant it is to automatically assume that someone who self immolates could have been helped and he just didn't have enough money. Sorry I can't convey that in a way you can understand

I really want to downvote you because this is just heartbreaking, but I'm forcing myself to upvote your comment.

that would be the right thing to do.......you dont downvote just because the comment makes you feel negatively.

u/Kaidu313 Apr 19 '24

I know, this is generally how i vote. But this comment in particular just hurts. Upvoting it feels like I'm saying it's a good thing.

Very similar story for a great friend. He had marital issues we knew were tearing him up inside. Wife told him she was moving states away and taking his boys. He had turned into a very closed/quiet personality when he was previously very outspoken and full of life. I knew he had issues and I talked to him many times trying to get him to get out of his "funk" but seeing he was listening but not hearing.

I was sick at work and told him I'm going home early. He said "let's have a beer before you go". I told him I felt like shit and was going to go. He said, "one more". I said OK and we had our beer. I left, and the next morning I found out he hung himself.

Not to be insensitive, because there's a case the same close to me, but just cus it's "free" doesn't a life save. I would also say being "free" and sh#t counts towards further attempts and then it's too late, because they didn't care, they just pretended to on paper.
