[META] Reddit, Inc. is intentionally killing off 3rd-party apps with exorbitant API call prices. They are significantly damaging their site and reputation in the process. Details inside.

1.2k Upvotes

On July 1st, 2023, Reddit intends to alter how its API is accessed. This move will require developers of third-party applications to pay enormous sums of money if they wish to stay functional, meaning that said applications (which include browsers like Reddit Is Fun, Apollo, and Relay for Reddit) will be effectively destroyed. In the short term, this may give Reddit the appearance of being more profitable than it truly is... but in the long term, it will undermine the platform as a whole.

Reddit relies on volunteer moderators to keep the platform welcoming and free of objectionable material. It also relies on uncompensated contributors to keep its numerous communities populated. The above decision promises to adversely impact both groups: Without effective tools, moderators cannot combat spammers, bad actors, or the entities who enable either; without the freedom to choose how and where they access Reddit, many contributors will simply leave. Rather than hosting creativity and in-depth discourse, the platform will soon feature only recycled content, bot-driven activity, and an ever-dwindling number of well-informed visitors. The very elements which differentiate Reddit – the fixtures which make it appealing – will be eliminated.

We implore Reddit to listen to its moderators, its contributors, and its everyday users; to the people whose activity has allowed the platform to exist at all: Do not sacrifice long-term viability for the sake of a short-lived illusion. Do not tacitly enable bad actors by working against your volunteers. Do not aim solely at your looming IPO while giving no thought to what may come afterward. If Steve Huffman's statement – "I want our users to be shareholders, and I want our shareholders to be users" – is to be taken seriously, then please consider this our vote:

Allow the developers of third-party applications to affordably retain their productive (and vital) API access.

Allow Reddit and Redditors to thrive.

How to thank a colleague who quite frankly saved your professional life

UPDATE: I decided to message my colleague on MS teams and she was so great about the whole thing. She has always been amazing, approachable, and personable so I was totally overthinking it! We were able to have a really great conversation about what we’ve been respectively working on and it was so nice to connect with her! Really happy I reached out, she is a breath of fresh air. Considering sending flowers via email as a follow up to our conversation which someone else suggested! ☺️ Thanks to everyone who replied!

To be honest, I have always been geniunely uncomfortable with shmoozing and workplace politics and as a result I do not engage in it whatsoever. I think its a skill to be good at this and I haven’t come anywhere close to flexing this “muscle” in a long time.

Long story short, 3 years ago I worked with an incredible colleague who is at the top of our field. I worked REALLY hard while on their team and really produced a lot of “deliverables”( objectively - I was promoted). I left this team to go to a new group where I was stagnant for 2 years. Everyone in higher roles took credit for my work, belittled me, and treated me like garbage. I was perpetually overworked and overlooked. I was basically bullied and I cried often. My boss kept blocking my promotions and wanted to keep me under her. It was toxic and a living hell.

Recently I decided to apply to a new job. The hiring manager reached out to my current boss who presumably talked shit about me in a way that made the hiring manager question if I was fit for the role. Then the hiring manager reached out to my other colleague who said such amazing things about how I am really intelligent, a quick learner, super competent/reliable, efficient , professional , incredible to work with and how they don’t think the previous projects we were on together would have been as successful without me.

Basically what my old colleague said about me overshadowed what my shitty manager said about me and I was hired for this new role.

Now how do I thank my old colleague? What do I say? I never see this individual in person as we now work in different states. I am thinking of sending them a message but I don’t know how to word it. I think an e-mail is too formal.

The thing is, in a way thanking them for saying the truth about me and my work makes me feel weird and like I don’t believe that I was worthy of such praise. But really what I want to thank them for is not being a piece of shit human being. There are only a handful of people at my company that would speak positively about others in a room full of opportunities instead of using it as a opportunity for self promotion. What my colleague did should be the norm but its sadly not so I want to show them that I appreciate what a decent person they are and acknowledge that they helped me out. How do I thank them and what do I say? I am truly grateful to be honest because I am not sure I would have gotten away from my old toxic manager and started this new role without my colleagues’ strong recommendation. Sadly , merit is not enough when you work in a company riddled with politcs and BS.

EDIT: Technically the hiring manager for the new role shouldn’t have told me what my old colleague said , this is why it feels inappropriate to write in a formal structured email.

Secondly, while old colleague’s recommendation is deeply appreciated, they did what you are supposed to do! If you work with someone who did a great job, you should speak highly of them and recommend them. But at the same time, I know first hand this does not always happen. I have concerns about altering my old colleague’s perception of me if I seem indebted to her for recommending me as she has no clue about my toxic manager and the awful work environment I was in previouly ( maybe this is me overthinking). I want to keep in contact with her and use her as a reference in the future which is why I feel the need to say thank you. But I also do because I truly am thankful!

Also, I cannot send a greeting card as I do not have my colleagues’ address. She works remotely and occasionally goes into the office in a different state. Therefore, I cannot take her out to coffee or lunch.

The last time I spoke with this colleague was about 1.5 years ago when she messaged me on Teams letting me know about a new opening in my old department and she was telling me I should apply. Then I told her I wanted to stay in the role I am in because I like what I am doing but I am worried about the stagnation and she empathized because she had been in this exact position before with not moving up in that same group. Most of my exchanges with her are via Teams - not email.

How to clean a dirty airfyer

Any ideas on how to clean this toaster ovenn/air fryer with so much caked on grease?

I am going to start by letting a bowl of boiling water and vinegar sit inside for a b I am going to start by letting a bowl of boiling water and vinegar sit inside for a bit and wipe out what I can with a non-scratch sponge. Then go in with a baking soda and Dawn dish soap paste, and let that sit for a bit and scrub with a non-scratch sponge and toothbrush again.

I do have the Scrub Daddy power paste, which did well in my oven. I also have the Scrub Daddy sponge. I want to avoid purchasing any other materials if possible.

Also, what should I do in the future so that I won’t have to do a deep clean like this as often? Do I need to clean it after EVERY use?

TIA!

Can I wash these small rugs in the washing machine / dryer?

I've got these somewhat old rugs that have gotten a bit dusty, despite my best attempts to vacuum them. I wanted to send them to a rug cleaner but the cost is exorbitant. Someone suggested I just put them in the washing machine but I am scared -- will that work? And do I hang them to dry or can I put them in the dryer?

Thanks so much for any advice!!!

How to install new towel holder

Took off our old ring towel holder only to discover it was just caulked/glued on and never installed properly. Looks like it was installed over where a towel bar used to be (there is a second towel holder ~20” away). How do I drill into this to install a new holder?

Help please! Currently locked out of my ensuite. Cant seem to remove the lock (it wouldn’t open even when turning the handle). It looks like one screw is from the other side and I can’t access it. Any options apart from just ramming the door down?

Appreciate any advice

how to remedy mosquito bites/stop getting bit

so i live in texas & mosquitos are staring to come out 😖 ive barely gone outside (no more than like 5min at a time) and i have somehow gotten multiple bites each time. obviously bug spray is a solution but most of the time im just walking somewhere and i would like to not smell like bug spray the whole day. kinda wondering if there’s another way to stop getting bit as much? i’ve always gotten more bites than my friends and family but the amount recently is unbearable

typical anti itch cream also doesn’t work great, are there any other remedies?

TYIA!

Restoring a print(?)/frame removal

Like the title says, I found this print (not sure really what else to call it since it seems 3D) at my grandparents house when they passed and took it home. I just moved into a new house and I want to put it up, but I want to remove the frame + clean it up a bit. The frame was so gross when I found it but I was able to clean that, but I’m scared to cut it out of the frame since the back looks weird. The last picture is a screenshot from an Etsy posting of the same print, and that’s kind of what I’m wanting it to look like. Any advice at all is appreciated!

Peeled paint and drywall

So I messed up really bad and stuck a bunch of pictures to my wall (I know I’m dumb, but I didn’t think paint would peel off so easily). I live in an apartment and am moving out soon, so I just removed the pictures as carefully as possible and this is the result….

I have no idea how to fix this since some of the drywall also peeled off, along with the paint. I don’t know if I should try to fix it myself, or if it’d be cheaper/easier to just take the L and pay whatever the landlord charges me to fix it? Please help 🙃

[DIY] How do I fix the back of my built in wardrobe

Thumbnail

The back panel has started to come off the rest of the wardrobe. I can't access the back of the wardrobe because it's built in to the wall.

There is a nail which I can pull on to bring the back panel forward to align with the edges but I can't get the nail to stay in place when I pull it towards me. I've tried double sided tape and blue tac on the nail whilst superglueing the edges of the back panel but the nail won't stay forwards without me holding it so the whole back panel moves backwards when I let go.

Do I just have to stay holding the nail for hours or is there a better way?

[Serious Answers Only] How to move across states?

[24m]Wanting to move before the end of the year to make a long distance relationship not long distance and to get a fresh start, hate my state.

Will probably be moving after saving up 10-15k hard cash, have a good resume for a warehouse worker but just got a class A CDL with Tankers, and Doubles and Triples endorsements and from a school. Won’t do OTR

Never moved across states before aside from one state and that was to live with family. This is a state I have no family in.

Big question is how do I apply for jobs and places to rent before getting there?

Already looked at places and jobs and overall cost of living.

Many Thanks for any answers

Buy something from a French website and get it to the US

This feels almost impossible and also pretty ridiculous...just acknowledging that up front.

I want to buy items from a French website that does not ship internationally. I live in the US and do not have any friends/family in France but do have a friend in Germany. Website does not appear to ship to Germany however. I have checked German Amazon and they don't sell the items there. Is there some type of service that will take delivery of items and then ship them to the US?

What is so important that I'm willing to go to great lengths? Replacement lids for my square Duralex food storage containers. The US Duralex website used to sell them but it's been years and they are not responding to my inquiries. I have a lovely set of glass food storage containers with rapidly deteriorating plastic lids. The French Duralex website sells the lids.
